I just want to say thanks for making all these videos on the old OMC outboards. I've watched them all. I used your carb and lower unit rebuild videos to refurbish a 1973 Johnson 20hp about 3 years ago. Since then I've done two 25s, a 15, a 9.9, a 9.5, and a 3hp. All between 1957 and 1977. Just bought a 1975 6hp for $100 for the latest project so I'll be using your videos as a reference once again. Thanks again for making such detailed videos.

I've been looking for a detailed video on this exact setup for the last year or so as I serviced my impeller awhile back. I got it back together with pains taking patients but I could never get it to shift properly. Come spring when weather permits I will follow this video to the T, hopefully I will be able to get this old outboard back to normal. Thank you for this video you now have a new sub and huge thumbs up from me...Will post how it went in a few months as spring up here in Canada's north doesn't come till late April.

What a fantastic series doing this. Great job! I hope that mine will go as smoothly. I felt nervous when you were putting it back together.

Thank you for the nice clear and precise instructions. I have an 8hp Johnson, 1990 that doesn't quite look like yours. Was about to pull it apart to check the impeller...... but now, probably not lol. Was going to do the carby too, but that also looks like a mission almost impossible. Once again, cheers for showing us how hard this impeller job could turn out. They sure do know how to create lousy impracticable designs these Johnson people. A simple inspection plate higher up the shaft to undo all rods and shifters would have made life so much easier. Great vids by the way. :)

Logical and easy to follow. The roll pin on the shaft was a difficult step until you showed me how. When replacing the lower unit oil, I make sure the top screw comes loose before I remove the drain. Just to make sure. Then use a pump/ tube to fill from the lower hole.

Good series on servicing these great little motors. One thing everyone should do when reassembling- put some grease on the driveshaft splines, where it goes into the powerhead. NOTE - no grease goes on the very top (flat part of the shaft), just the splines. That will ensure the next time it has to come apart it will. Otherwise the driveshaft can become seized into the engine crankshaft.

Good advise for sure. Not sure but I think using 2 headless main bolts would make it much easier to hold the lower end in alignment while slipping everything together. Great video.

Awesome video ! Thank you so much , I believe I may be able to change my impeller by myself. The boat shops around here charge 150-200 dollars and hour plus parts with a one hour minimum charge. I just bought my grandpa’s 9.5 two stroke Johnson.

Love all your videos. Thanks so much, man. I do have a quick question though: I just resealed the lower unit and replaced an old impeller on a ‘73 6 hp. I didn’t realize until I went to put the lower unit back on that the water tube coming from the pump housing had come off with the lower unit. Do I need to take the power head apart to replace the tube, or can I put the tube back in place from the bottom. Thank you so much.

Are the lower units from 65 to 69 compatible as one piece replacement...I have an option to replace the whole unit but not sure if two those years are compatible. Thanks.

Was needing some advise on making the forward shift a little stiffer. Neutral and rev have a solid shift as to forward feels loose, like its going to slip. I’ve recently had the gear slip from forward back to neutral when in trying to open it up, thinking it was the clutch dog. Just changed out the c-dog, now trying to address the loose gear issue?? I’ve tried several different times to remove lower unit and re-install to no luck. Please help!!

Pballa 707 my guess would be the brass shift rod coupler may be getting worn out and slipping when you put it in forward. When you put it in reverse I could see that being more firm since the rod ends would be butting together. You will have to remove the Lower Unit to get to this. Here is a link to show you the part I am talking about www.ebay.com/p/Johnson-EVINRUDE-OMC-Shift-Rod-Connector-0303794-303794/1934320355

My 1957 Johnson FD-11, isn't that easy to reassemble the copper water tube keeps moving when I try to align, making me have to drop it again.
@thisoldoutboard
@thisoldoutboard 7 жыл бұрын
Dmonieluv before you reinstall the Lower Unit the copper water tube should stay near the center of the lower housing and shouldn’t move around too much. If it is the rubber grommet, find number 43, in the link below may be worn out. That one will be a pain to replace. Hopefully you can get the Lower Unit back on without having to go to that trouble. Thanks for commenting. I hope the video helped you. Best of luck www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1957&hp=18&model=FD-11&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Lower+Unit

@rocket city motors,Thanks for your prompt response. It doesn't appear to be worn out, I will pull the tube back out to inspect and try to position it further down the grommet, I may have not have it seated properly. Thanks again, and yes all your videos are helpful.
