Johnson 6 HP 4 Stroke. Model J6RL4SU: Gear shift handle is stuck. removed lower unit gear is free and shifting ok. removed the handle from it's square bar. trying to remover the PVC that is connected to a wire which prevents starting the engine while in gear (pull start) my question is looking at the leg screwed to the power head, does this come off without removing the power head from the housing or disconnecting all the other things connected to it?

How much can stay on the powerhead when removed from the housing? Flywheel? Carb?, Recoil Starter Assembly?, ...? That would be helpful to know if servicing the crankshaft seal when doing the waterpump

I had mine out on the eater the other day and my shifter malfunctioned.. I could move it forward and toward neutral but it was all play. It wouldn't engage. So I jammed it in reverse and had to drive back to the dock in reverse. 😂😂 I'm probably just gonna get it serviced by a pro after watching this teardown. 😂

I have the 5 hp with no shifting linkage.I pulled the lower unit didn't have to twist the shaft,all the seals and spring came down with the shaft.Is this normal on the 5hp?
@28cruzin4 жыл бұрын
I just started doing a waterpump on the twin to your motor. Having done hundreds of pump jobs I dove right in. Everything went fine until I tried to extract the lower unit. While pulling I could feel the spring but was unfamiliar with this model. First I went to a parts cattalog to see what was up under the powerhead that could be causing this condition. Second I went to KZbin and found this video. You did such an excellent job showing and describing I immediately subscribed. If it weren't for this video I would have removed the power head next. Unlike your motor, this motor has very, very low hours in fresh water. I will consult with my customer about freshening the seals under the powerhead and recomend this video. Thanks for a great video. Dave

Just picked up a '77 Evinrude and will be doing this! Great video, very useful information that's a "must know" rather than forcing it. On my engine there is no kill switch on the front and I noticed yours has one along with others. Some do some don't. Was that an option? I don't have a kill button on the end of the tiller either. Haven't ran it yet so wondering if the kill switch is integral to the twist portion on the tiller handle?

I have a 1975 with a broken roll pin. What is the purpose of the the roll pin apart from making it difficult to drop the leg off the motor?

its pushes the lower crankshaft seal into position, and keep retention on it. Quite an important pin.

Thx for video. I have a 1963 evinrude 5.5 fisherman that sat long time. Rebuilt carb and got it running but now leaking oil from weep hole so I think seals are bad ( drive shaft seal??). All pry need replaced. Not sure how to tackle and no 5.5 videos. I’ve read 6 hp was similar to 5.5. True? Is the lower unit essentially the same and I could follow your video ? Thanks in advance

The prop on my '79 6hp Johnson doesn't want to come off unlike yours did in the video. Any tips for trying to get it off? It's a Solas 8.25x8. Cheers!
@ollyboo Жыл бұрын
Did you ever get it off? Mine is having the same problem
@ChippyOZ Жыл бұрын
@@ollyboo Got it off eventually after trying everything else I could think of. Laid down the motor horizontally with the prop facing up and soaked for days between the prop shaft and prop with rust breaker spray. Used a butane torch to really heat up the shaft to get the liquid boiling to help penetration. Lifted up the motor slightly by holding onto the prop and hit the shaft end square on with a hammer a bit at a time not overdoing it but it moved a little bit each time. Kept spraying and hitting until the shaft end was flush with prop. Then got someone to help and hold the motor up still by the prop while I used a drift to keep hitting at the shaft. Eventually the prop came off and it was corrosion that had been the problem. Cleaned up the shaft and inside of the prop, put in a new shear pin (the one in it still looked OK though), lubricated and reassembled. Don't know if this was the correct way to get it off - I'm not a mechanic, don't know if any damage was done, haven't taken it back out on the water (it's a second motor) and haven't done a gear case pressure test in case any of the seals were damaged. Will check one of these days...

I doubt this will get a response but hey. I'm new to this whole ordeal and recently purchased a boat with the 1964 version. Everything seemed to be great with the motor but it was not pumping water. Almost all of the seals in this video on my engine were shot. And even the seal around the line to the water pump was shot. I'm pretty confident this is why I was not getting water. But would this explain what I feel is excessive blow over of oil and gas? That was coming from the weeping hole for the pump nothing extreme but it was evident
@BrandonsGarage Жыл бұрын
That probably unburnt fuel/oils slowing dripping out. Its common after use to find a little puddle of black oil under the motor later.

it grabs the lower plate, spring, and washer. All of it slips. And, it does sometimes tear up parts. I believe the goal is to tear up the cork washer.

Well thats not good. Remove the lower and hope that it rotates. If not, remove spark plugs and see if you can peek inside and see rust. My all time favorite motor! Although the reed petals seem to wear out and start to leak after 40 years of every summer use. A question: do you recon that engine would work with glassfiber reed valve petals? Is there enough vacuum to open stiffer petals? Where i live, new petals are pretty hard to get without ridiculous postage costs. So i'm thinking about a diy way from a sheet of reed petal glassfiber.
