Building an insert tool for my flycutter gets me into milling, finishing and hardening D3 tool steel, including a spark test, with a chat about hardness, rigidity, stress, and strain. All over the place.

Been watching through the ol' catalogue again, for memories sake. Can you believe 1 million subs has become real? That said, this might be the finest example I've ever found of the exact type of dad humor I resonate with, and it's why I loved the channel so much the minute I found it (from Alex French Guy Cooking's channel, when you rebuilt his pasta press)

This may be a stupid question, but isn't the through hole for the insert supposed to be slightly too far back so that the taper of the screw pinches the insert to the back of the pocket? Maybe I missed something but this didn't seem like it happened. If it did not, you will lose a ton of rigidity in the carbide insert. Bad news bears.

OMG as a huge fan of this channel I can't believe I never saw this video until just now (Jan 2020). Finally I see the face attached to the voice! I may be traumatized for life LOL. You know how you get a mental image of someone from just hearing their voice, especially if you've heard it for quite some time but never seen them? Yeah ... TOTALLY DIFFERENT than I expected. Not necessarily in a bad way but jarringly different enough from the vague mental picture I'd developed that now there is some kind of weird "does not compute" thing going on in my head when I watch the rest of the video. Oh well, I'll eventually get over it - perhaps watching more ToT is good therapy ..... On a serious note Mr. Old Tony, I honestly do tremendously enjoy every video. Informative, funny, educational, and incredibly high production quality. It really is a joy to watch every one so thank you for all the effort you put in to making the videos.

Wanna hear a fun story? I live in Quebec, and my cousin Dima worked with AvE in the tech support department of Bosch, before AvE left about 3 years ago. And i was begging him for a long time to somehow set up a meeting with Him (the one whose name cannot be pronounced correctly), and my cousin was like -No man, i can't, he made me swear on my mother. So, about a week ago, i think it was friday, my cousin Dima was fired from the tech support department of Bosch. Apparently, as a side gig, he was illegally hacking these stupid electric scooters to be able to reach 35km/h. Long story short, he made me swear not to tell his mother that he was fired from his job, and in return he would set up a meeting. Besides, aunt Luba is an old lady, she don't need this kind of negativity in her life right now. Anyway, Dima told me that when they worked together, every day after work, AvE visited the Old central bus station. And i was like -Yeah, cool, i know the place. To those not familiar with the place, the "Old central bus station" is like this ugly concrete building, what they use to build in the 70's. The ones with the permanent aroma of stale pee. As they age, these building tend to attract the kind of vendors you generally won't find in your local family friendly strip mall. (Just as a side note, i don't judge and absolutely don't mind businesses that offer hydraulic butt toys and clamps, nor extreme vegetarian sex massages. Also, i very much like the meat and onion pirogi Vova is selling at the corner) Where was i... Ah yeah, so, i decided to give it a try, so me and Dima took a couple of beers and went to the bus station. We wandered around for awhile. The place was kindda creepy. I had no idea what we were looking for. I sat down to roll a cigarette on a bench in front of "The Rubber Empire". Dima left standing and was nervously looking around as i was smoking the weirdly shaped cigarette i managed to produce. The flicking neon sign stated that the rubber guys had "All the rubber you can rub" and "Open 24/7". A well built man with lush facial hair, in an elegant suit and a red turban was standing near the black door that was apparently the entrance to the place. Suddenly i felt Dima tapping on my shoulder. He whispered -That's him. The guy with the paper bag... I turned around. -Him? Are you sure? I was shocked to say the least. I always imagined AvE (real name's Colin by the way) looking like.. you know, like your average canadian asshole, i guess. But against all my expectations, in front of me stood a short bald man, wearing an expensive, three piece, pin-stripe suit. He had glasses with with thick lenses that made his eyes look small and spaced apart. He was holding a brown paper bag in his hand and was heading towards the Empire. I stood up, flicked the half finished cigarette, and advanced towards him to introduce myself. I called -Ave! He spooked and turned around. I reached my hand and said -Ave, it's a great... He stepped back and before i could finish my sentence he asked -What's your name, boy? He sniffed his nose and touched his left nostril with his thumb a couple of times. I said -Hey Ave! I'm Stas, it's an honor... -Keep your dick in a vise! - he interrupted me. He looked annoyed. -What do you say about my empire of dirt, bud? - he pointed towards the Rubber Empire. -We haven't been... - i tried answering his question, but he interrupted me again... -That's skookum! - He blurted -Now, fuck off. He turned away and shouted -Farouk, come take this from me. The man with the turban approached us. -Please call Rudolf, tell him to prepare the room - said AvE to Farouk and gave him the paper bag. He turned away and started walking towards the black door of The Empire. -I love your channel, man! - i said to his back. -Farouk, take care of this please - he said without turning his head and made a waving hand gesture. -I think it would be better for all of us if both of you get the fuck out of here before i break your shit - Calmly said Farouk. -We're sorry, sir - said Dima. He then turned to me and said -Lets get the fuck out of here, before we'd have to use our free medical care. As we started walking, i heard him shout -Farouk, time! The entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and i really had to take this off my chest. I'm thinking about unsubscribing.

@@StanislavG. I get that it was not what you expected, but put yourself in his shoes. Did you ever think that maybe a guy who never shows his face in his videos, rarely ever puts personal details in his videos, has never (to my knowledge) said his real name in his videos, and gives little to no indication of where he specifically lives in his videos might be trying very hard to avoid the exact situation you put him in? To him your just some random internet stranger, possibly even some dangerous lunatic (not saying you are but how the hell would he know that). Now you have not only put him in an awkward situation by ambushing him off the street, but now you've shared details with the whole world that he clearly didn't wish to share and in so doing violated his privacy. Did you even think about any of this before posting your comment? That story wasn't funny. It was petty and inconsiderate.

So, for reference, if anyone wants to heat treat D3, the process shown is just fine. It's a good idea to hold it at temperature for a couple minutes, or as long as you can stand, whichever comes first. 1750F (954C) is about when it starts to be more orange than red, a bit cooler is fine. The perfect tempering temp is 400F, for which a kitchen oven is perfect. You'll get about 61 HRC and avoid re-embrittlement which means it'll be very tough, ~25 ft-lbs Izod. Well Tony, this must have been some time ago, there’s me thinking about 100k but showing well over 700k! As per usual the video was brilliant, you manage to show us a proper “how to make a great product “ without having to endure a load of B/S and not buy expensive tooling that would cost more than buying the tool you wanted to make in the first place. Keep up the great work and I think it’s great that you use child labour in your workplace (kidding). But I think involving the kids is a good move rather than watching them waste their lives on a phone/ tablet/game machine etc. I wish that more people would involve them and help pass on their knowledge. Have yourself an your family a wonderful weekend, of course we can see some more of your videos.....Phil

Holy smokes. I was sure it really wasn’t that old mr. Antony, until he showed the google profile pic. And... it feels like meeting an old good internet friend in person, who lives really far away, for the first time. For whats worth, it stands true on my side. Im a pediatrician (no, not a foot doctor, thats a podoatrian 😆. People often take one for the other), hobbyst woodworker, and got to Tony’s channel for the drill sharpening video, and stayed for the jokes (and machines. Who doenst like machines right?). And for a while, it stood as my favorite humor channel. It’s no overstating that tots scripts and production is top quality professional content. But then, probably subconsciously, I started get this weird want, which evolved into a urge, to start on some machining and metalworking. Almost like the subscribe messages are not the only subliminal messages on his videos 🤔 😆. I do mostly handtool woodworking (which i found tot is also fond of on the stool videos), and didn’t even had a drill press. Now, im halfway into building my lathe (the ideia is for it to be able to do some limited metalwork, which should cover 90% of my shop needs,but will be used mostly for woodturning) while scanning the deep web for a proper metal lathe. And a mill. I also got into welding (stick, planing an upgrade to tig for the next 6 to 12 months), electric work, electric motors, heat treatment... My handplanes feel lonely sometimes I think. But hey, at least my wood has time to dry properly now. Thank you a lot, my friend Tony. Hey, you are actually getting pretty near the 1kk subscribers now huh?

When I was in the US Navy in the 80's, one of the schools I went to was a metallurgy and heat treatment of metals, in San Diego. Probably the best school I went to. I say that to say this: While it may be difficult to find, get yourself a copy of the NBS 88 Monograph. It has the time/temperature charts for most anything you will ever do in regards to heat treatment. There is also similar information available for heat treatable aluminum alloys out there Here is one place to locate the NBS 88 digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc13269/

First of all, congrats on the 100k subs! Secondly, congrats on the over-the-top production of this video. Now, technical questions. I noticed 2 things. 1) All of the milling on the insert seat in the holder was climb cutting. SOP? Or did circumstances dictate this? 2) When you flamed the holder, you had a bolt in the hole. Reason?
@InsideAlan
@InsideAlan 7 жыл бұрын
Marvin Carvin the bolt is to protect the threads, at those temperatures there is a risk of them oxidising.
