Great video. I'd never heard of using vinegar on rust, it seemed to do a good job on your cylinders. That beauty of a car deserves all the attention you can give it. I would like to see more.

Perhaps as a next step before engine tear down, pull head, use wooden block mallet method to get some movement? I think you are just about there. With head off, use some evapo rust to soak but also scrub walls with nylon scrub pads to remove additional rust -it is amazing how that little fine line of corrosion at the rings will lock an engine up. I have seen far far worst engines than yours freed up. The atf was a good move also and I like your use of your hot pressure washer, very innovative, don't give up as of yet!

I tried letting vinegar sit for about a week in an old Yamaha enduro motor that was rusted solid. The trick that finally broke it loose was actually using diesel fuel. From my understanding (at least from what an old motorcycle guru told me) is that diesel works better because it slips past the rings. I'm looking forward to seeing the teardown and watching this beauty run.

A classic such as this deserves to be on the road again, under its own power. I also had not seen what vinegar could do with cylinder rust. Good experiment! Any thoughts on trying one of the "off-the-shelf" products designed to remove rust? You may have to do a tear-down anyway, those valves looked pretty crusty with tetraethel lead residue... Great video, hope to see more!!!

You can also get "cleaning" vinegar that is a bit stronger, you can definitely feel it when you get it on your bare skin, that might be better for the rust removal.

Mix acetone in with the ATF and attempt to crank start the engine after a couple of days soaking. The car did come with a crank (located in the boot) and I'd give it a try. Nice video and nice car. Hope all works welland thanks for sharing.

The acid in the vinegar gets neutralized by the rust. While you cleared the visible rust up in the cylinders it was neutralized before it could do the job of removing the rust in the small spaces between pistons and cylinders. I would recommend putting a couple of inches of vinegar in for 24 hours, suck it out and repeat daily for 1-2 weeks. This will do a better job of allowing the active acid to get all the way down the side of the piston. Think of each day the acid getting neutralized and the need to replenish so the process can continue working on the more severe and hard to reach areas.

I have not heard of using vinegar on cylinders but it does make sense as it is acidic. It did seem to clean out quite a bit of the rust but it would take a long time to do the job. It was also a good idea to heat the engine to try to free it but if all else fails the a strip down is the final option. I think it was worth trying all the other options though as you have lost nothing by doing so. Interesting video Steve thank you. 👍👍

Steve, I wouldn’t give up on trying to free the stuck pistons. I would try filling the cylinders with a high quality penetrating oil and give it plenty of time. In a month or two you may find that you can tap the pistons loose after removing the head. I think there’s still hope that the engine can be freed up and made to run without a full tear-down and rebuild.

I've used vinegar to derust a lot of things. I would not put it in a cylinder. The vinegar is going to turn the rust into some black crud. Not sure who told you that advice. People have run water vapor through them though to clean them out while running. I would of myself sprayed a penetrating oil like PB Blaster in each cylinder to unstick them, and let the piston rings take care of the rust. Then later on run some water vapor through while running or SeaFoam if you aren't down with water vapor.

I would like to see the tare down of the engine. Try to add some salt to the vinegar, it enhances the process. You could also add baking soda. I didn't have science in high school, but the combination of vinegar and bicarb has certain properties that help to release certain contaminants.

II'm of the opinion that vinegar does not work on rust and that it can attack the base metal. The best product I have found for removing rust from steel is Bilt Hamber Deox C. It's made in the UK; I'm not sure if its available in the US but it is very effective and economical to use as it comes in powder form and is disolved in water 1 part to 19. It works at room temp or faster at elevated tempuratures. It is supposed not to attack the base metal and it seems not to but I would not fill an engine up with it! I suspect it works like Evapo-rust but not as expensive per litre. Good luck with this project.

I've rocked some rusted clutches free before, but I sense the torque imparted by rocking the car is pretty mild. What if you put it on a lift, disconnected the drive shaft so you could attach a 6-foot metal fence post to the end of the drive shaft and put some real torque on it? Seems like the worst that could happen is to snap some disintegrating piston rings.
