That's great, and the massive, unobstructed vertical and non-vaulted volumes permitted in underground stations by Sydney's sandstone ground are really fantastic. In pretty much all cities where the ground is softer or waterlogged, they'd need buttresses everywhere to maintain these large vertical open volumes in non-vaulted stations. They really took great advantage of the much more favorable soil conditions to create stunning unobstructed volumes in underground stations. Now they just need to fine-tune the line's autopilot system to remove the little delays to open the doors after arriving in stations, before departing when the doors are closed, etc.

Amazing video! This is my local system, so I have a few more interesting mentions. Rather then regional rail, Sydney Trains is what we call in Australia 'Suburban Rail' It is the standard in australia and is the style of system used in every major Australian City. Sydney's regional rail system is called the Intercity network, run by nsw trainlink instead of sydney trains, the same operator's as all the diesel lines down to Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. Originally, the section of the metro between Epping and Chatswood was built in the 2000s to serve Sydney Trains, however the steep gradients and tight turns meant it was slow and inneficient. This lead to the proposal to turn it into Sydney Metro, in combination with a new section of line to the hills district. This opened in 2019 and is called Sydney Metro Northwest. It uses 1500v dc electrification, the same as sydney trains and our electric intercity lines. This is why the new-built sydney metro city uses 1500v dc instead of the newer more effecient 25kv ac (being used on Sydney Metro West and Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport, both brand new lines under construction that are not using any existing lines). The M1 City and Northwest is also being extended to Bankstown along the ancient Sydney Trains Line, now under conversion. This difference does mean that the lines cannot be linked in future and that rolling stock has to be different (not that big of a deal but not ideal either) Overall Sydney Metro is just about the greatest project in Sydney in the last 50 years, and i am excited to see it keep growing!

The lack of north-south lines is incredibly frustrating as a Western Sydney resident. It makes some journeys nearly 4x longer than they should be. Bankstown to Hurstville for example is a nearly 2 hour train ride, but only a 15 minute drive. You may argue that is because of the metro conversion on that line, but that is only partly to blame because you still had to go all the way Sydenham in order to change lines. It's a wonder that Sydney even has decent trains at all though considering the local government is more interested in building the highest density of toll roads in the known universe.

One of the criticisms of all this infrastructure development is that it's first being built in areas which aren't in areas with the highest population growth. Areas of Sydney which need future infrastructure the most to match population growth aren't seen as important enough because the electorates aren't wealthy enough in the eyes of politicians.

Sydney Trains is more like the Paris REM or S-Bahn than traditional regional rail, which is why we call it “suburban rail”. It runs from the suburbs but doesn’t terminate at central - most lines go through all of the city CBD stations on the city circle or through the western half of the city and over the harbour bridge. Sydney and Melbourne were actually early pioneers in this sort of service
@Thom-TRAАй бұрын

As soon as the Bankstown line conversion is finished, they should move on to all lines and make the whole network driverless, less strikes, greater reliability, and much less running costs. It may take 50 years but must do something about the transport chaos that is Sydney at the moment.
@jacktattersall945711 күн бұрын
Sydney Metro was really built as an express for the T1 North Shore Line between Chatswood and the CBD because the North Shore Line (which uses the Sydney Harbour Bridge of Chief Engineer Bradfield) suffers from lots of tight curves and is only double tracking (the limited stop services Sydney Trains runs on this line are like the most useless expresses in the world because of all the curve speed restrictions). Sydney Metro goes underground, avoiding all the painful geography that affected the late-1800s engineers of the North Shore Line. The section between Epping and Chatswood was also converted from Sydney Trains.

Great video! Although I don’t think I would be the only one who would describe the Sydney trains network as a “suburban” network, not regional. Idk if it’s just us but we classify “regional” as the really long distance trips on the trains such as the XPT, whereas the Sydney trains network more resembles a suburban network, with the trains setup to have higher capacity and serve the Sydney urban area. Although then again the government did just abolish “NSW trainlink”, who ran the regional and intercity network (I’m sure there’s a way to describe the difference, I’m not bothered tho) and put at least the intercity network under the banner of Sydney trains, so I guess you could say that it provides some regional service? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good video tho!

To me, regional rail is just a type of service that connects different areas (urban, suburban, exurban) that doesn’t conform to the traditional AM-in, PM-out pattern.

@tacitdionysus3220Ай бұрын
You misunderstand the system. Sydney Trains from the 1920s was a hybrid system. Multiple lines from the suburbs converge into shared tracks through the inner city, providing metro-like frequencies in that inner area. It is both a suburban (in Australia 'regional' trains are from a city to far out into the country) and a metro in function, using heavy rail technology. The Metro is the other way around. It behaves like a metro in the inner city sections and like a suburban train when it gets further out. So there is not really 'suburban' vs 'metro' trains, but two hybrid systems that do both; just ne with a century old technology, and the other with current technology.
@PeFePTАй бұрын
The Sydney Trains network functions like a "metro" on many of its sections. It only acts like a commuter rail network on the outer sections. The difference on branding between Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro is a marketing exercise (and an anti - union stance because Sydney Trains is heavily unionised and the Metro is not) that's all. The train network in Sydney is really very good (and I am comparing to other new world cities in North America or New Zealand, not Europe or Asia) However the Sydney Metro is really showing Australia the value of high quality frequent public transport. A plus from me.
@stevencatt6651Ай бұрын
Most lines have 15 minutes frequency or better.
@TomHommusАй бұрын
Sydney trains shares tracks with intercity trains and also freight at times. Sydney trains also shares tracks between lines e.g. city circle is fed across multiple lines, Cabramatta to Liverpool is shared between T2, T3 and T5, Strathfield to Central local tracks T2 (2 branches and T3) Sydney Metro has exclusive right of way. The same distinction is used overseas as well. Sydney Metro has a 98 percent on time to 1 minute (a delay of more than 1 minute is considered late) whereas Sydney trains are in the 80-low 90 percent (where anything less than 5 mins late is considered on time) It's more than just a marketing exercise.
@TomHommusАй бұрын
I just looked Sydney trains performance has been terrible over the past month low of 47 percent (yes it means more than half were at least 5 mins late) alot in the 60s and only has recently recovered to low 90s now that we're in the holiday period. Can Sydney trains be a metro? Yes but we will need to lose the double deckers which cost us dwell time and have massive clearways projects and extensive track amplifications.
@tacitdionysus3220Ай бұрын
Yeah, and I think we are about to see something else again. The WSI Airport metro is meant to knit the northern and southern ends of the Greater West together through the new airport. It is a light metro (3-4 cars) with high frequency potential; which seems well matched to the more spacious areas and more widely separated denser centres in the West. That's different in character from the more 'traditional' (full) metro sections in the denser inner city east transitioning to commuter-like rail in its outer sections. It struck me it's almost the opposite of Bradfield's Sydney Trains concept consisting of suburban lines that converge into shared tracks to enable metro-like frequencies in its inner centre. Sydney Trains is a commuter rail system that acts a bit like a metro in its core. Sydney Metro is a metro-system acting more like a commuter train outside its dense core.

If the Leppington branch is converted to Metro, that would shake up the whole system
@tacitdionysus3220Ай бұрын
Its not official, but the vibe I'm picking up is the metro will run straight south from Bradfield to Oran Park and beyond, because its meant to primarily be a north south transport spine for the West. It will not be distracted from that by connecting to Glenfield. The SW Link would extend west to meet the metro and terminate (South Bringelly??) and stay as Sydney Trains. It seems there is value in making a connection with the metro, but while retaining the existing Leppington stabling and having some Sydney Trains services a place to terminate instead of all having to go to Campbelltown/Macarthur. Extending the SW Link to Bradfield or the Airport is apparently much more expensive than using Metro, given the much larger tunnel and station boxes needed for less frequent 8 car double deckers. In contrast making the extension and connection just to the south could be done 'at grade' with much less cost. I guess we will see.

Sydney's suburban system uses 8 car double deckers already. Sydney's system is very peaky. This video was filmed late at night, but during the morning and afternoon peaks you'll be surprised how much the trains and the stations fill up. All 9 escalators at Central station platforms get queues during the peaks. The line was built with future growth in mind. Such a line is built to last 100+ years It's cheaper and easier to make the stations larger now, than to have to expand them later. It'll be the wrong move to build a line like this to cater for only existing demand. The current frequences are every 4 minutes peak, every 5 mins interpeak (midday and afternoon), and every 10 mins during the night and weekends. I agree that the 10 min night and weekend frequencies are a bad effort for an automated system.

@@jet9211 The suburban Sydney system runs every 3 mins at peak which are metro frequencies. The metro's daytime frequencies are decent but I suspect it's Sydney's mentality of transport being for commuters and not much else that's holding the night and weekend frequencies back. Provided you have enough trains and maintenance crew, increasing frequencies on an automated line is as easy as a flick of a switch. Which they did on some special occasions.

ironic …… massively tall station ceilings and quite short, almost hobbitesque, train ceilings. clearly the dutch are not welcome.

Fun fact : we have on going union strikes that are basically holding the government hostage and bringing the whole systemto a stop, making most of this video completely pointless as we don't even know if we can use the rail system. 😂

well done on your place name pronounciations. most wouldn't bother.

Once in a while I like automated trains myself, even if they don’t run on rails. I don’t know why but I prefer trains that have operators, kind of like what I want to do with a locomotive when I get older.

Pity you didn't cover the stations. They are incredible. Too much time wasted showing the interior of the train.

I showed several stations. Just because you had your eyes closed doesn’t mean they weren’t shown.

Technically it’s Sydney second automated metro. The first opened in 2019 and this is basically a whole new line connecting with it. That also makes is Australia’s second automated metro line. Third, fourth and fifth coming in 2025, 2026 and 2032.

@@MaxS-hn8we Its the exact same line its just this is an expansion upon that. Its bassically the one line split into two different phases of construction
