Wonderful to hear this . Ades has many types of composition under his sleeve from Couperin to Korngold sounding here . The opening is really wonderful and how it all comes to be what it is . Makes you relish pure sound ! But even better Ades ' knack for making the memorable with it !

I've tried to get into Thomas Ades several times without connecting with him. This, however, I find absolutely absorbing. Sweet, inventive, original, accessible - how often you do encounter that combination?

This is the first I'm hearing this piece so I may change my mind after a few more listens. However, this sounds so forced to me. As if instead of taking a foothold in 19/20th century tropes, Ades wraps them in "contemporary sounding" effects that make it neither here nor there. It's 20th century music wrapped in 21st century packaging. Somewhat dated, somewhat pastiche. Taking romantic melodies and sprinkle harmonics or the odd glissando around them? Just very incongruent.
