I loved your idea, and notice how TOMY in Japan stick to that idea as a 3 pack. But as we both know Toby has been a tricky sell for a long time now. And that aspect of Toby returning has us spooked I'm sure. It really feels like a desperate move to somehow spark interest in the show, but sadly it seems so much damage has been done. And the deeper core problem is the stories. Thomas & Friends is in reality Thomas and Frenemies, (a person with whom one is friendly despite a fundamental dislike or rivalry). Without that the show & stories will not work. If every character is on happy pills it never sets up stories that have tension or jeopardy. You also lose any chance of entertaining anyone over the age of 3.

12:15 I saw one clip of his episode, and basically Toby never lived on the Island of Sodor. Gordon states that his line on the MAINLAND is closed for repairs, so he brings him to Sodor to help out for awhile. Making him a non Sodor resident is obviously a slap in the face to fans. In terms of personality his still old faithful so that’s a positive. Also in the US dub he’s voiced by Edward Glen, who also voiced Thomas in Thomas and the Magic Railroad

I find it very interesting that many of “new” characters in aeg are older characters. (Toby, Donald, Duck, etc.) Many of the new aeg exclusive characters (Sodor Cup Racers) are so different looking to the older characters. They don’t have the Thomas look. I do like the improvement in the toy to show accuracy. The new Lionel and Capsule Plarail look fantastic.

I'm glad you have your fighting spirit back Leo. Your resilience is one of your greatest strengths. I really do believe that the AEG character designs are the originals put through either a program or a designer to simplify them as much as possible to make it cheaper and easier to animate and make toys. Thomas, being an extremely complex shape, had the features softened and the simpler areas like the cab enlarged, Emily, of a very elegant, Victorian, complex shape got a similar treatment, but with Toby being a box, the best way to cheapen him up for toys was to reduce material cost by making him more square, with the accuracy to earlier versions being completely unintentional. I gave up on finding error Thomas toys practically before I started, with the local Target going from a Thomas isle with all the branding, to now (past good few years now) having at most 3 things to sell, and Toys R Us was the only other place with Thomas toys. Your puppeteering skills keep improving, give it a few years, and you might just be the next Jim Henson! On a more serious note though, I love that you still put stories in these videos to keep things interesting, its what always set you apart from the crowd of generic copy paste videos.

I live in the UK. In a nearby supermarket, the only thomas toy stock they have is 1 box of 'non blind bag' thomas Minis. Normally they are £3.25 but the supermarket had dropped them to £1.05. It was filled with Tobys & Emilys.

Honestly, I’m really surprised that we ended up getting Toby in Australia. I was really shocked when i finally found him in my local big w. It seems when it comes to Australia and new AEG releases, we either get them pretty late or we don’t get them at all. There’s been a Motorized Henry floating around for a few months now and it still hasn’t made its way here to Australia which is pretty sad but the fact we got Toby is pretty surprising. Same thing goes for the AEG push along Edward, it took a while but I finally found him in my local big w, but by then it had been months since the model’s release.

What i've noticed with trackmaster 2 and AEG that my trackmaster 2 trains run normally after all these years but AEG has started run slower and slower and my AEG Thomas that i got when I saw the first AEG stock even with new batteries from the store bought a couple hours ago the Thomas barley runs. PS: Also i forgot to mention the switch on the AEG on some has started to bend to the right and when that start to happen if you switch the switch fully the train sometimes works but not always and its slower.

Could be a few things causing this. 1, carpet fluff and hair getting caught up causing friction or 2, very low quality motors that get tired with very few hours of run time. 3, decay in the electrical circuit via a leaked battery. 4, don't assume a new battery is better than the previous battery. Batteries don't hold their charge forever.

I'm glad the AEG trackmaster models are making the models taller, which leads to better proportions, and that absolutely helps with Toby. I think the most disappointing thing about trackmaster engines of the past is that they had to adhere to the tomy/plarail height clearance for their risers, and so many characters suffered from it, specifically Oliver, Toby, Mavis, Belle, etc, especially all those new in box ones you showed they look great but are so squished! Glad to see mattel finally breaking the mold and doing what needed to be done, but I suppose it might be too little too late. Also- in Canada it has been very difficult to find the AEG Diecasts, I have been trying to find Gordon for around 4 months now and he is never in stock. Of course you'd assume he's on Amazon since all shopping seems to be shifting there, but he's only available by third-parties for 45$+... Maybe Mattel would not be doing so bad if you could actually buy the toys! I have found diecast Toby and Henry which i bought. But Gordon is such a key character! Also I don't watch AEG either, its not made for me, but I still buy some (a very small some) of the toys, they are pretty well done. Also fun video... love how "gentle" you are with them XD

Me in Canada who had to wait almost a year for some of the new stuff to release, and still haven’t for a lot of them. But then we were apparently the first to receive the delayed Reboot Motorised Henry, which I did get. Generally, it seems countries like Malaysia and Indonesia (I think) are almost consistently the first to have new toys on the shelves. Malaysia recently got toys shipped for All Engines Go DUCK, when he has not even been properly announced yet, same with other Season Four merchandise. Season Three has not aired it’s annual movie yet and there already Season Four merchandise to be sold.

Hey Leo, just curious if you’ve ever seen the Hit Toys Trackmaster flip-face Toby. It only came in a short lived copper mine set and it is quite hard to find. Its proportions are spot on and I would say it’s one of the best looking Toby toys ever made. Its only downside is that Toby has a mineral wagon that houses the battery which is permanently attached to him.

18:58 I live in California and my area has basically 0 Thomas stock. The only place that carries any stuff period is target but they only usually ever have one or two items. Hey and also something I think you might wanna know about is there’s a new train show that came out recently called “Go Togo” and it uses real model trains on sets just like classic Thomas. None of the episodes are released worldwide yet but it’s still really interesting.

I think that Toby in AEG is one of the better trains in the line, I just still can’t ignore the face, it just too unnaturally big in proportion to his body (at least compared to the original trackmaster). I don’t have many trains from this line because AEG sort of scared me off in a way, I just feel that destroyed the franchise in a way where it’ll never be redeemed, and that’s really sad.

Thats easy. it was a great comment. With AEG and how the Thomas stock is not around i'm thinking there will be a major back to basics happen. Just like the Thomas Wood disaster, from that train wreck we ended up having some new incredible TWR products. The constant in all this is change, and so often unnecessary change. We don't see TOMY playing the same games. It's a very Mattel idea to force a now look and design.

Fantastic video, as always. I remember seeing all those older TM2 toys in TRU at the time - truly a blast from the past! If only they did things differently now... The Thomas toys are in a terrible state, which is annoying bc they are still making toys and some of them are really interesting (like the new TWR items) - and them by comparison, I saw a video showing what they sell at Day out with Thomas in the USA... and there was some fantastic stuff. So it seems Mattel can do it but they (choose?) not to? The blocks thing didn't even click to me at all! That why I love seeing your videos - you always have a new perspective! From all the way over in the state Michigan in the U.S. all my childhood, (Thomas childhood is around 2010-2014) stores that had whole Thomas merch isles slowed over the years to now the merch being shoved with the rest of other generic toys and all the dvds gone. The closest thing Thomas Merch Related to me isn't even a product. There's a little toy shop within walking distance where I often get wooden train models, and off in the section they set aside for board games is literally a single shelf with a sun-faded paper displaying the original wooden railway Thomas models on it's side. It's not even an entire set of shelves like it used to be, it's just one singular shelf mismatched onto a completely diffirent, blank white steel one. They have not sold Thomas merchandise in years.

Talking about stores having AEG stock, in Bulgaria it used to be pretty similar, but for the last month or two I have been finding many new characters at two big toy store here. Mainly of the Push Along Metal Engine variant. The only ones I haven't seen are Toby, Salty and Harold. Plus, variants of the other engines. Like Crystal Mines Thomas or Muddy Nia or something else along those lines. It's definitely interesting, because I don't even know if we have All Engines Go dubbed and airing on TV. I'll knock on wood for that to stay in a similar state.

2:15 Ello Leo, soooo it isn’t just Australia that has a shrinking supply of Thomas stock, in America (or Louisiana at least) there is barely any Thomas stock whatsoever, I don’t really care for the All Engines Go rebrand still but I still check up on how it’s doing from time to time, and for the past few months, any Walmart and Target I have went to have had ZERO Thomas products, the only places I can ever find Thomas merch is in discount stores like T.J.Maxx, and random places like Hobby Lobby and Dollar General, I really don’t know how long it will be like this but with how long this has been going I have kind have been worried that (most likely) after the 80th anniversary that Thomas won’t really last much longer.

Also leo from what I've been told the reason they changed from classic trackmaster to trackmaster 2 is because they were so similar to tomy they had to pay a charge of some kind so they decided to redesign I don't know exactly how much of that is true but that's what I've been told

Thomas toys have also become hard to find in America as well. Target only carries the motorized engines, the farm pack, talking engines, and maybe one or two sets. Walmart has a bigger selection, but does not have the motorized engines like Toby, only the train packs. Walmart does stock the diecast engines, but the selection can vary by location. Mattel has even fallen behind with the distribution of Matchbox stuff. Walmart and Target don't have the Sky busters planes, there have been some waves I've only seen at Dollar Tree, and the only store I could find the small action drivers playsets in is Ollie's, which is kinda like The Reject Store. I ended up with a way worse factory error AEG Percy, where his front axle was just shoved into the chassis instead of the hole it's supposed to go in. It made Percy sit low, and there wasn't enough room in the body for those wheels to turn, making it unusable. I ended up prying the axles out and using a vice to put them in the right holes.

You're forgetting hit Toys Trackmaster which is the true Trackmaster classic it was 2007 - 2009 also you can fix yellowing in Thomas toys by putting the yellow part in hydrogen peroxide and leaving it in the sun for around 4 days but it might rub some of the printing off so be careful

You could always try and dig up some old "Mad Bomber Stuff bts" or changing servos in the toys like the old times. Plus youtube has a lot of bad stuff hiding under the belt. Where I live somewhere between tamworth and Inverell Australia, the Big W shops only have the rolling stock now, I think they removed the metal magnets with couplings now. The back of packaging situation is weird because on Chinese packaging it shows other engines available but on packaging in other countries it’s just nothing. I will give the motorised boxes something for having an image on the back unlike the push along backs which are just text and nothing else.
