Thomas and Friends: Series 5 Ranked

Very interesting ranking video. What you said about the episodes made me think about how I felt about some episodes growing up. I watched Happy Holidays and Spooks & Surprises a lot growing up and knowing they are series 5 tapes made me realise how nostalgic the series is to me.

I actually had the first video. The second I remember borrowing one summer in 2003 from a local library visiting my grandparents' house in England. Such great memories.

What’s even more annoying about Thomas and the Rumours was the fact that the magazine story it was based on had BoCo as the main character and they wasted the opportunity to finally give him the main role he never had but much deserved!

Very interesting ranking video, I remember series 5 of Thomas the Tank Engine was from having the VHS tape called Spooks and Surprises which had a mix of episodes from that series which was okay, but I enjoyed some of the episodes from that VHS video. I recently watched all of the series 5 episodes in order and I didn’t realise how good it is, it’s not my favourite series but it still a good series. Busy Going Backwards is my favourite episodes because it’s got funny moments and the best runaway in the whole show and I love that they used the William Tale tune for the runaway seen. I think Gordon and the Gremlin isn’t a bad episode as it is, I would put that it’s okay and I’d put Thomas and the Rumours in don’t really care for because the story is dull and for me it’s an forgettable episode. I enjoyed A Surprise for Percy as a kid but after watching all the series 5 episodes I prefer Put Upon Percy because of Percy’s character (my favourite character in the show) and because of the music and mine collapsing scene. I’m not a fan of Rusty and the Bolder because this episode that scared me as a kid, the engines being terrified by a bolder rolling on the line chasing them, looking like a life threatening situation. I’d describe this episode as serious and dramatic.

I watched Series 5 when it first aired. I think ‘A Better View for Gordon’ and ‘James and the Trouble with Trees’ were more similar to Railway Series-based stories than any other episodes in this series. By this point in the show, they employed a lot more crashes and other action (and in the case of ‘Lady Hatt’s Birthday Party’, visual gags), but unfortunately I find that some of it ends up coming out as ‘cringe’. However, I really think they absolutely nailed the ‘darker’ episodes. They must have had a lot of fun putting it together. I am a bit of a ‘purist’ in some ways, so I tend to gravitate more towards the episodes that bear some resemblance to the Railway Series stories, but I think on the whole, this series is a lot of fun. Haunted Henry is probably one of my favourite episodes from the whole show.

Ok, what you said about Make Someone Happy kinda pissed me off. Because, it’s not written for Edward at all. Would the line “James, stop thinking about yourself” be something anyone would ever have to say to Edward? The whole point is that James, who’s being self entitled, sees a friend, who, btw, he *does* know from the Christmas party, just like all the other engines, and helps her out, and brings her to a carnival. That’s the point, it’s so he can stop being a self centered asshole. That’s why James did what he did. Edward would never have to do this because Edward has almost no flaws from a character standpoint, there’s nothing for him to overcome, because he would never act the way James is acting in this episode. In fact, I’m legitimately certain the episode would be worse with Edward, because Edward is already dull. That’s probably why he was barely used in Season 5. I get it’s not as interesting as other episodes, but calling it crap makes me think you completely missed the point of the Episode. Make Someone Happy is nowhere near the same level of trash as Thomas and the Rumors. Neither is A Surprise for Percy, but I think most of what you said is valid on that episode. Overall, I just kinda think what you said about make someone happy was kinda stupid. But it’s your opinion.

I don't know about Make Someone Happy being written for Edward, though he could have at least be the one to call James out on the red engine's attitude instead of Thomas, who can still make appearance here and there. Just not at the beginning where Edward appears instead. If there's an episode that feels like it was written for Edward, it's Happily Ever After. Just imagine Edward coming to terms that he's neither something old or blue for the wedding with some beautiful dialogue between him and Old slow coach, yet, gets a very heartwarming ending with a brief throw back from Saved from scrap when he gets teased by Thomas. Furthermore, especially now, it's not very often that Edward gets an episode to himself, let alone the one where he isn't just impacted by other characters, all while keeping him in character.(*cough Edward strikes out *cough) Also, to make up for Percy not being the sole focus, why not have him daydream a bit for comic value in regards to the wedding? A nice throw back to A Scarf for Percy if you ask me.

Yeah I think Edward telling James off would've made better sense because James and Thomas were already ample friends by this point having Thomas rescued James in Trouble with Trees.

You should get races rescues and runaways and spills and chills if you like thomas episodes that are dark and actiony, I Totally Recommend! But If you don't like the episodes like thomas and the rumors or a surprise for percy, Then i would NOT Recommend Make Someone Happy.

Make someone happy is my least favourite Thomas episode of the classic series, it throws a lot of realism away and like you said if the episodes good the realism doesn't matter as much but the episode still isn't good. James' "character development" in this episode is nothing new and Mrs. Kindly just uses the railway for her own small insignificant advantages like going to a fair or using Percy to get her a good luck package when she could easily do it herself.

Season 5 is the most overrated season. I don’t want to offend the fans who love Season 5, but they can be blinded by its awesomeness that they didn’t see the imperfections it has, like dull and poor stories.

Yeah season 5 is perfect, my favourite as a matter of fact, but it will have its flaws being episodes that just exist, poorly established new characters (apart from Cranky and 'Arry and Bert), and stock footage
