Can't help but imagine a load of people watching this back in 1999 wondering "How dafuq is this behind the scenes of a Thomas the tank engine movie" Her heart was in the right place, but I think Britt would've been way better off making her own independant movie instead of mixing all this with, well, a british talking train.
@supermariof05216 жыл бұрын
Yeah Brit was just as much to blame as the test audiences. Sure the test screening would've gone better if it were held in the UK, but at the same time, the British audience would've objected to the Shining Time Station elements. So either way Britt kinda brought this on herself.
@lowgunfire26714 жыл бұрын
Nah, British people need to employ that "stiff upper lip" that they like to boast on having and just accept the fact that these elements were needed to make Thomas appeal to a GLOBAL audience. Not just the British.

I agree with that entirely.

@@lowgunfire2671 Thomas already appealed to a global audience before this film. These elements totally alienated anyone outside the US, the only country that saw Shining Time Station.

Not to be a blasphemous Thomas fan, but even if we had gotten the Director's Cut of Magic Railroad as originally intended, I don't think it would've been a much better movie. So much of the plot doesn't really mix with the world of Thomas & Friends. I'm not even fully referring to the Shining Time Station and Mr. Conductor bits, it's more the Burnett Stone/P.T. Boomer storyline that I don't think made too much sense. Yes, a lot was missing from the 1999 release, but after seeing some of the leaks and reading the original script, I cannot say that the directors cut would have been much better. P.T. Boomer doesn't seem to be a very well fleshed-out character and I think intent is a strong part of what's missing. Not just Boomer's intent for what he's doing, but also intent off camera, behind the scenes. What was Britt's intent in merging the worlds of Shining Time Station and Thomas the Tank Engine? Was that her plan from the very beginning of creating STS? What was her intent in creating one-off characters like Burnett Stone, Lily, and P.T. Boomer? Did she think about how those characters would impact the Thomas brand? I don't think any of these questions will ever be answered and the question/statement discussing whether or not the series would've done better and the movie would've been better had they released the director's cut is pretty much null and void at this point. The footage we've seen ties a few loose ends together, but still matches the overall quality of the original film. I don't think it would have been that much better. Hopefully an official rerelease, with the full, unaltered version of the Director's Cut could change my mind.

@@elijahadams6985 Toy Story 2 came out the year before and showed just how good kids movies can be. It's genuinely baffling to me that this film that came out AFTER that could have been seen by anyone as an acceptable standard for a children's feature film. It's the perfect topic for an essay.
