The old guy who kept shouting “SCIENCE” was actually a scientist himself and called Magnus Pike and was known on British TV back in the 70’s and 80’s.

There's a great clip out there with Dolby explaining Pike's odd delivery on that particular "She blinded *ME* with science!". When they were recording the lines, Pike kept hitting the "me!" part hard instead of "science!". When Thomas asked him why, he replied matter-of-factly "Dolby, it would be quite something if SHE were to blind ME with science!".

He wrote some of the poppiest lyrics of all time here. Every time since 1982 that i misplace something, I sing out loud: "I don't believe it! There she goes again! She's tidied up, and I can't find anything!"

Thomas was like a mad scientist - he made his own synths in his teenage years, released several cult classic albums (was never quite mainstream enough for a large audience to "get" him) and then went on to pioneer so many fields in music and tech. As far as songs go, this was his biggest hit - but the tune he created that MOST people would know is actually the classic Nokia polyphonic ringtone. He didn't write the tune, but he invented the tech and then converted the song to it. If you're old enough, you know the one.

Wow, I'd love to have met Thomas Dolby! I did get to meet the Thompson Twins the first time they played Columbus. After the show we took them out clubbing and to an all night diner when the club closed. They were very down to earth people, great to talk to. And I love Reflex! Hurt and Politics of Dancing are both real favorites of mine. I wonder if anyone has reacted to their stuff. I'll have to check!

You are right, when this song came out, no one had heard anything quite like it and it was a pretty big hit on top 40 radio. Thomas Dolby was one of the first all electronic musicians in the 80's but he always had a real human touch to his music. His song, May The Cube Be With You, with George Clinton (of Funkadelic/Parliament/Atomic Dog fame) is a very funky song. I'd also suggest listening to The Flat Earth, I Love You Goodbye, and I Live In A Suitcase. Thomas Dolby is one of the greats! Also a must hear is One of Our Submarines.

LOL, this is so typically 80's. Every music video came off as some kind of hallucinatory opera, all sorts of weird happenings that usually had little to nothing to do with the song. This one shares the song's subject of "science", but goes in a really crazy, silly direction. Like I said, typically 80's. :D:D:D P.S. This song always makes me want to do the Robot dance!

I love that you were sad that it was over. The ending makes more sense when you're listening without pauses. Thomas Dolby is a technology and studio genius. In the '80s synth pop era he was extremely creative and a few levels above most of his peers. Hyperactive! and One of Our Submarines are other great songs to check out from this period. His later music had a much more organic feel even though it was still very much synth-based. Check out Prefab Sprout's album Steve McQueen (US title - Two Wheels Good). It's an amazingly lush album, and probably Thomas Dolby's greatest achievement as a producer and master of the recording studio. Dolby retired from recording music in the '90s to develop a career integrating music and computers. He consulted for Microsoft early on and started a company that made a music "engine" for websites and cell phones. All of his technological advances didn't do much for him financially -- until he found his fortune selling ringtones a $1 - $2 apiece to early cellphone users, where his engine was installed in about 1/3 of all devices.

1 year before this album. Foreigner hired Tom Dolby and Mutt Lange to work on the bestselling album 4. After that album, TD worked on his solo album. He invited Mutt Lange to sing backing vocals in this song. This was 1982. A 40 year anniversary 🎂 Great modern rock song. 🎹 The next year, 1983, Def Leppard fired producer Tom Allom and hired Mutt Lange. He brought Thomas Dolby to program and play keyboards. 🎹. 1 year later, The Cars hired Mutt Lange to become the producer. In his house, the late Ric Ocasek and TD listened to The Cars demos, which would land in their bestselling album Heartbeat City. RIP Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr.

Thomas Robinson - he got the nickname "Dolby" because he was always messing around with the Dolby sound equipment, equalizers and mixing boards that were starting to be a huge thing in the early 80's. He was an experienced studio musician and worked on so many albums in spite of a short solo career. He went on to found Beatnik software which was used to stream music over the internet - a great, eclectic career.

Jay, Thomas Dolby is one of the most undersung artists in music history. He's a producer, an engineer, a freaking WIZARD when it comes to sound. And, oh, by the way... the ability to download music on a cell phone? Thomas Dolby invented that. (No kidding.) "She Blinded Me With Science" was his one big hit in the U.S., which causes many people to brand him as a one-hit wonder, but that's an unfair title, and he has much better songs (not that this is bad, it still rocks!). Check out "Hyperactive!" for some frenetic energy, "I Love You Goodbye" for a sweet, bluesy love song, "Budapest By Blimp" for a soulful bit of heart-rending nostalgia, and "Airhead" for some upbeat, catchy snark. Thomas is one of my idols. I hope he becomes one of yours too.
