Thomas Edison Didn't Invent the Light Bulb. While Edison did have an astonishing 1,093 patents, the majority of these were not of his own invention. He stole most of them. While he did land the patent for the light bulb in 1880, the real inventor was actually Warren de la Rue, a British astronomer and chemist, who actually created the very first light bulb forty years before Edison.

I've studied Edison for years, and you are correct. Some ways he avoided prosecution, was to put American patents in his employees' names. If you go to the actual patent records, they say Edison Laboratories, then an employees' name, never his name. I looked up several and never found his name on any of them. I have a newspaper ad from the late 1800's that advertises a "snake oil" remedy by Edison.

The first 100 or so patents dealing with the telegraph were definitely 100% of his own doing. He was, by trade, a telegraph operator. His initial claim to fame, the phonograph was also most definitely invented by him, as well. Although, Alexander Graham Bell greatly improved it, AFTER he invented it. He wasn't a complete fool who knew nothing about electrical engineering, chemistry, and the like, but as you get later on his life, the involvement of the invention process he was in, for particular patents gets less and less with his older age.

The concept was around for a time but edison did it first after his apprentice was placing a replacement filament in a bulb after he had handled charcoal for a few hours. When it lasted longer than normal edison began playing around with it himself and discovered the charcoal residue acted as an insulator

He was not a thief. He improved the bulb from a non usable form to a usable form and then patented it. So he was a theif. The scientist who invented bulb was not able to make it usable for people. Edison did that and patented it. Then he should be imporsoned. Do you know how patent system works. This video and it's commenters are equally dumb. There were bulbs created before la rue, but what la rue crated was a bright and long lasting bulb based on platinum filament. And what Edison created was a tungsten based filament bulb that was economical and affordable to the masses. Their inventions were different and both of them built on top of other breakthroughs. This is a little dramatic. He built a research lab that either improved or invented new methods of doing things that allowed for new technologies to come to the market. I could see how he would come off as shady in how he would incorporate other technology and take credit for other peoples work including his own employees. But some of them such as Henry ford gained valuable experience working for him prior to starting there own business even though he was ruthless to others like Tesla. But Tesla brought a lot of his problems on himself by being naive about human nature and office politics. But Edison was clearly innovative in his own right and made many contribution to engineering that would not have occurred that soon with him. He definitely was a master at building organizations that could figure out improvements to failed past designs or invent new technologies. Edison is even credited with saying everyone in industry steals but he knows how to steal. So the fact he would be in the know and incorporate the newest technical developments into his projects should not be a surprise to anyone. I think the man problem I see in the comments is that people assume that Edison must have either been a super human sole inventor in a room by himself, or he was a complete lie that stole everything. The truth is like most things somewhere in the middle. He was intellectually gifted with a proclivity to be able to tinker with machines as well as start businesses from an early age. He was fortunate to find a good mentor in his early 20s who taught him electrical engineering as well as his own ability to learn by himself reading. He made several early inventions, then pioneered a research laboratory, and his later inventions are an agmagomation of various peoples ideas. He was still involved in the big projects like the TV camera doing some of the engineering for the electrical components even though he was not the primary or only designer to work on it. He was a good showman who clearly understood how to use the media to make himself be the face of the company, but to say he was a saint or a villain are both naive views of history.

Thanks for your wonderful comment. In 1840, Warren De la Rue enclosed a platinum coil in a vacuum tube and passed an electric current through it, thus creating the world's first electric light bulb. And in 1860, Swan demonstrated a working light bulb using carbonised paper filaments in an evacuated glass bulb. Actually many scientists have worked on it but Warren De la Rue is considered to be the first, though his bulb was very expensive.
