When I was in school in the 1950s and 60s, we of course were taught that Thomas Edison was a great hero. My father, born in 1925, was named Thomas after Thomas Edison, and my middle name became Thomas for the same reason. I have a complete set of the 1942 Encyclopedia Britannica, and in it, they gush like fanatics about how great he was. As a long time historian, I learned fairly early that what I'd been taught about him was oh so wrong. That led me to dive deeply into many historical "facts" to root out the truths. To me, Edison is near the top of the scum heap, but Christopher Columbus tops it.

Edison was most definitely not an inventor. He was a self promoting businessman, and very good at it! The light bulb we all know today was done by Swan over 20 years before Edison blatantly copied it.
@chrisdale3087
@chrisdale3087 6 ай бұрын
Edison WAS the inventor because he used a filament that didn't burn out after a few seconds to a few a minutes. Adolphe Chaillet's handmade bulb (built while working for Edison's General Electric Company is still burning right this minute.) You also don't know what a legal inventor is. The inventor isn't the person that comes up with an idea - it's the person that builds a physical working model and makes it work continually and is granted a legal patent for it. Joseph Swann had a similar working bulb but did not have a longer lasting bulb than Edison.

@@chrisdale3087 Evidently they started putting anti-Edison propaganda into grade school in the past 20 years and now these "experts" are blabbing about their special education. Edison's story is very interesting and does include some pretty unfair employment and business practices, but he was an energetic and tenacious engineer as well. It does annoy me that we can't balance the good and bad in such a man. It's always the simplistic god vs devil conception so common in the childish American mind.
@chrisdale3087
@chrisdale3087 Ай бұрын
@@mightisright That's true - there is more propaganda in education than there ever has been before. It's a poision The people who have some real intelligence will see through the propaganda. They always will because they'll know educational materials produced in this modern 'woke' era will be more along the lines of fascist / extreme leftist propaganda than books resembling actual education. The people who have low emotional and intellectual intelligence will be manipulated by that anti-Edison propaganda. The good thing is no one falling for that propaganda is ever going to go on and do better than Edison and contribute in society. All they have is their sanctimonious opinions and their sweatshop made clothes and coffee made with slave labour. They can't contribute anything near what Edison has done. Edison wasn't perfect was he was nowhere near the monster they make him out to be. I'd go as far as saying Edisons' critics are morally worse than he is for the way they live now compared to how he lived back then, and how they fund evil companies through mindless and ignorant consumerism, than anything Edison ever did. They'll go on about what a great guy Tesla was simply because they read it or watched a movie, and ignore Tesla's treatment of animals in experiments, but they won't see Tesla and Edison each as products of their own environment and era because they're too busy getting emotionally involved in the entertainment, rather than remaining calmly and professionally objective.

Many, many inventions have been done that way, the Singer sewing machine being one. singer didn't invent it, and he stole the original idea, but he did improve it allowing him to claim the idea. Though to be honest the original inventor it finally got a lawsuit settled about it.

Edison didn't do anything other people have been doing for centuries. DaVinci gets credit for all those ideas when he was often taking this other guy's ideas fleshing them out, making them better, or even work. He knew a lot wouldn't because of the lack of abilities and materials of the time. A lot of the Renaissance artists, like Michaelangelo, had apprentices working on paintings and sculptures that the main men got credit for. Edison bought up patents that failed. The genius was that he saw the potential of some and was able to cobble the best ideas together, add to them, and TADA! Lightbulb! It's not always about being the only, or smartest, guy in the roo, it's often about utilizing the smartest people in the best way.

The last statement was false - Edison didn't win the electrical market in the US, Tesla/Westinghouse did. We operate on alternating current. Edison did win to make power companies in the US Northeast, with the name "Edison" still in several of those companies today, even though they had to abandon the Edison electrical system for the Westinghouse one.

Edison may not have wanted to create anything that would kill, but he sure killed a lot of animals , including an African Elephant, trying to make a point; telling people, "This is what will happen with Tesla's AC/DC electricity!" Then he flipped the switch and the animal died...........

The Edison was a hack thing is a really tired meme at this point and shows a lack of understanding of how business and invention works. No. Edison did not singlehanded invent everything that you thought he did in second grade. What made Edison successful was his ability to take already created ideas and make them affordable/more efficient. Yeah. He didn’t invite the light bulb. But his company made it so that the light bulb was actually practical. I’m all for knocking him down a peg and giving proper credit to his employees. But it’s swung so far the other direction that people just as misinformed just in the opposite direction.

Exactly! There's a huge difference in something working in theory and being 95% there and a working product that's useful to the public. People don't get you can be a genius AND an asshole! We need both!

Edison was a sadistic prick. That's actually the nicest way to describe him. I remember reading a half page about Tesla in my science textbook in eighth grade (1988-1989). I always wondered more about this scientist who was barely mentioned. There was an entire chapter on Edison singing his praises. 🤮 By the time I started college, I found a book in the library on Tesla. I read it from cover to cover in a day! From that point on (1995), I have collected multiple biographies on the genius. The second book I read spoke of how Tesla came to the US from Croatia and he worked for Edison. Edison never paid him or any other members on his team. Tesla had a photographic memory. He invented Alternating Current while he was walking in a park in Croatia. He was reading a book in Greek (I think) when the complete blueprint and steps for AC came to his mind. He wrote to Edison and came to the US to work for him. Tesla spoke later how Edison would walk around and look through all the members of his teams notes and paperwork to steal them. He would force the team to create these inventions and then he would take credit. Tesla hated this. He was the type of genius who had common sense. Rare. Tesla told Edison from the beginning his DC would not be able to move a current. That AC would. Edison demanded Tesla write down notes on how to create AC. Tesla refused because he knew Edison would steal it and take credit. Tesla had all his inventions in his head and walked. It's not like he got paid anyhow. Here is the sadistic part (or at least one example) of Edison. Tesla and Edison were both trying to get the contract for Westinghouse (I believe I am sure someone will correct me). At the World Fair (i think it was 1890) Edison, being green with jealously, desided he would discredit Tesla by "showing" how Tesla's AC would harm people. He electrocuted cats and dogs until they died! Tesla said, "Hold my beer," and passed AC through his body and won the contract with Westinghouse. Edison walked away infuriated. I am just picturing some nine year old girl standing there with a kitten and Edison grabbing it out of her arms and electrocuting it. Edison eventually had backers who created General Electric. Guess they did not see him murder animals, not pay his teams for their work, and steal their inventions. What I am thankfull for is that people have become much more aware of Tesla's work within the last twenty years. To the point he has a cult following. Now, if only our government had not stolen all of Tesla's work and patents at his death. I am pretty sure they have pulled an "Edison" on what his life's work was.

You are a history revisionist. Just because Edison made the investments to make these inventions commercially practical, doesn’t disqualify his contributions to the technological world. Your video is a stretch. Muybridge made stills on glass slides that couldn’t be projected in rapid succession. Edison perfected the film camera and projector, which was stolen from him and was used in the film industry in Hollywood. I could go on but it falls on the deaf ears of the Tesla fanboys.

I thought Pierre and Marie Curie were the first to discover X-rays? I know they discovered radium and polonium, the latter named after Marie/Maria’s native Poland. Also, Edison would be horrified to know that his “electric pen” was later adopted for another, more fun purpose: tattoos. Yup, that electric apparently went through a few redesigns until it became the tattooing implement we know and love today (unless you’re a needlephobe like me 😂).
