Thomas Friedman: How Swift, Musk can resolve U.S.-China relations

I do like Mr. Friedman's reasonably balanced views on geopolitics. However, I doubt that it is that easy to turn the US into a manufacturing powerhouse by nurturing more people like Elon Musk. For a start, one needs to ask..."Why Musk needs to go to China to achieve the level of success he has?" It is because the US is not a suitable place for his business to grow. The US's supply chain is damaged in the last 4 decades, that is why China grew, while the US shrinks. US's financial system and labour regulations simply aren't a match for the Chinese. Don't forget the currency exchange rates between the U$ and the Yuan. It is just too expensive to sell US-made goods worldwide. So while a high U$ is a blessing fr American consumers, it is a curse for its manufacturing sector. Can more Musk make the US a manufacturing powerhouse? NO. For a start, the US education and psyche encourage more lawyers and bankers. These are glamourous occupations as seen on many TV programs. Did any of Trump's "the Apprentices" show a plumber, a machinist, a chemist, or engineers? NO. They were wannabe bankers in fancy outfits. They all wanted to be like Trump. It is not just more Musk, but it is the environment Musk is in that made him successful. Sure, he has done rockets .well. But can he do cars just as well as he does in China? I doubt it.
