I mean it's a surgery. It's just like surgery for a person they need to be put to sleep and monitored the same way. As well as the fact that someone went to school to be qualified to do said surgery. You're paying for a professional to perform a life saving surgery. I don't think $5,000 is that far of a stretch. Pets are expensive, if you don't want the financial responsibility don't get a pet. If you do have a pet it's important to have pet insurance as well as take your pet consistently for preventative care ie. Shots, testing, yearly blood work, heartworm prevention etc. There's programs for these things. My dog is on a wellness plan for her preventative care. A vet is still a doctor.

@@ingedijk2500 My dog got fixed and that surgery was a little over $1000 though I payed it on a plan because I'm not rich like that. I've never heard of such a low price for a surgery. Was it a small one? It probably also depends on if your dog had to be put to sleep or not. Also if your dog has to stay at the office for a certain amount of time, the after care, the medicine. In general medical treatment for animals or for humans is gonna be expensive. That's why we get insurance.

What makes me really sad is how easy it is in the US to get into financial trouble due to medical emergencies (regardless of how well Thomas Halbert handled the situation). I'm so thankful that I grew up in a country where insurance is something affordable and common especially when it comes to health care - and where the multiple surgeries of my cat basically cost me close to nothing, 'cause my insurance covered nearly all of it.

Exactly. My cat had the same thing Archie did (not as severe - no surgery needed) when I was out of town. My boyfriend took him to the emergency vet and I had to pay 1500 down. I had fortunately gotten paid that day and was able to give them my card info over the phone. I had to borrow from family to help pay rent, and I'm still paying them back. I'm young and still learning how to save, so I didn't have 1.5k in my savings. Fortunately, I got some of my deposit back, and 3 months later kitty is doing just fine. I keep seeing people calling him a bad pet parent... you don't expect emergencies. And you can't truly prevent urethral blockages, even with special food and lots of water. Male cats are just prone to it! I really feel for Thomas, and I'm glad Archie is ok.

I have a huge tabby boy who had this happen a ton- I remember him getting sick 2 days before pay day and we had just moved into our first home. We still rushed him to the vet, gave them all our details, told them where we lived and explained we couldn't pay, it was humbling but my boy needed the help. They took my boy, treated him, gave us medicine on the basis we would come back and pay. The moment payday came we went over, paid them in full and gave them a box of chocolates to say thank you. He's now 2 years UTI/blockage free and doing well. I'm so grateful to that vet for helping us and allowing us to keep our boy. He's fully insured now.

Seems like some people have an issue understanding the meaning of "cash flow" and "emergency" to me. Expecting $8,000 in a month's time (ad sense or brand deal income etc) is absolutely USELESS if your cat is dying RIGHT NOW ! People have also completely ignored the fact that the rent on the Texas house is half the rent of the L.A place (almost) plus he said he was moving in with his boyfriend and they will split THAT amount so he is effectively paying one quarter the amount he was before (from $4,000 to a little over $1,000 ) that's a smart move to me 🤷‍♀️ That's the problem with a young fan base, easy to convince to buy things but hard to explain basic financial matters to 🤦‍♀️

You also realize that he's suffering from his own financial mistakes, for which I have little sympathy for. He should have already had an emergency fund, but even if he didn't, I'm sure he could have easily sold his designer attire and bags, in order to pay for the vet bills. The problem is not his fanbase, but his naivete. Maybe you should explain basic economics to him, that way he'll be able to manage his spending habits better.

What pisses me off is that $2450 rent in Texas is still luxury! Like how about getting a one bedroom apartment instead? Wouldn't it have been EVEN better if his new rent was $1000 or even $800 so that 1. With the bf paying he would only have to pay 4-500 a month 2. He can still afford it by himself. Just because the rent is less than his previous (outrageous) rent doesn't mean anything if it isn't low enough for him to actually live a life he can afford. Plus the less he spends on rent the more he has to inject into his face, so it's a win win or more a win lose cause those injections are gonna mess him up before 25

That's fair, but I find it personally frustrating. I made a large move so I tucked away a lot of money for an emergency. Without making it too personal, I lost my contract for a job and apartment 3 months earlier than the contract said. I took a childcare job, but couldn't make rent because I didn't work during the break. Then I still haven't gotten my deposit back on an apartment because I had to call the police on my roommate. I had to dip into my savings and my new job is barely making ends meet. I had to leave my cat with my parents through all this which I hated, even though it was the best thing for him. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the financial situation of someone who can drop $1000 on a Disneyland pass, even though I am very sorry that he had a rough time with his cat. But despite my difficulties and having to eat ramen and everything... I didn't e-beg. I didn't ask anyone for money. While I'm older than Thomas (I think) I'm not *that* much older. People are asking a very frazzled ant to have sympathy for the grasshopper in his time of need. I'm sorry that he's having a time of need, but I am too. I just didn't live a lavish life style so I don't have to ask people for donations right now. (And... I know I did get some help that I'm very grateful for, my landlords in particular have been very kind and understanding of some of the problems and I've been sure to repay them by always being on time with my rent.)

It's a lot, plenty of youtubers, instagrammers and other influencers live the way Thomas used to, and give their audience a pretty bad image on how much money do they earn vs. how much money they spend, therefore why I see so much people trying to become youtubers like it's the way to get rich and popular fast and quick, but that's not the reality, just the fantasy we see through a poorly managed financial life. I've never liked Thomas but people need to back up with the financial advice. All it takes to go from having a ton of money to nothing is being fired without notice. I got laid off (not my fault) about 3 weeks before Christmas and despite several interviews, probably won't be hired until the new year. It's easy to preach about financial security and living withing your means when your not in the midst of a crisis. But the fact is that the majority of Americans would be crippled by an unexpected emergency of 500 or more (I don't want to go find the actual statistics right now but I'm pretty sure its over 50%). He may know now that he needs to be financially responsible, but he can't go back in time and unspend money. Yes he can go sell some of the luxury things he has, but that's not something you can do in the heat of an emergency. Just because people don't like him, doesn't mean its okay for them to be disgusting while he is in the middle of crisis.

He was going to be put down if he was there for any longer. He was about 4 or 5 years old when he got his Uti. We live in Aus, and it would have only cost us a couple of hundred for the overnight and catheter and blood work, but it happened to happen on a weekend so we had to take him to emergency. It ended up being 1.5 thousand. We were really lucky we had that much in savings (we don't have that much money, and at the time it was just mum and me) and he recovered well. It was then two weeks later when he got it again. Thankfully it wasn't on a weekend that time. He managed to recover well and thankfully hasn't had it since (he's about 8 now) He's not on the specialised diet anymore, just still added water to his wet food.

the government doesn't have it in their budget to cover millions of animal's medical care. the cost of running a veterinary clinic is very high and unfortunately that means bills will be high too. if they tried to save every animal whose owner couldnt afford vet care... they would go out of business. some animals do receive medical treatment when surrendered to the humane society. otherwise, many companies offer pet insurance, and it's also a good idea to start an emergency savings account for your pet.

i can actually understand the mom frustration though, i've been in a situation where i needed help too for my cats and for myself, and never got it, while online others seems to get whatever help they wanted so easily. I get how she can feels, it's really frustrating sometimes and it can make you angry, not an excuse for shaming though.

I feel like a lot of people that are highly criticising him have never moved out themselves. He is definitely in need of a wake up call and needs direction on how to handle his finances better but calling him a scammer seems insane. Where I live it's around £2k-3k a month for a 2 bed apartment (and not necessarily a nice one at that.) which is $2.5-3.7. And then on top of that is utility, council tax, car bills etc etc. He definitely is spending too much but attacking him that much rather than helping him does nothing for anyone. Has anyone had a vet emergency before? It's an emergency, it can't be postponed until the next pay check. It doesn't care about your spending the previous month. Of course you'll panic!

Well it's not good to use your fans for money if you are in those situations. At the end of the day you yourself got yourself to that point so just using fans for money instead of earning it yourself isn't cool. But I also wouldn't understand what that's like because my household income is 250 thousand per year and that's all I've ever known.

Am I the only one who thinks that viewers of the beauty community are equally as toxic? How many people criticizing him actually live in Los Angeles and are perfectly financially responsible? Thomas exhausted his other options (family, friends, companies). When people are in need for money, they make a GoFundMe. Why is Thomas an exception to this? How is this any different from influencers that sell merch or have affiliate links? Both a GoFundMe and merch/affiliate links are ways for people to show their support to an influencer. At least the GoFundMe money goes to a good cause. He didn’t force anyone to donate, so why is it anyone else’s business that fans WANT TO support Thomas? To that person who was complaining that their GoFundMe didn’t get the same attention as Thomas’s, you CANNOT compare the GoFundMe of a regular person to that of an influencer’s. Sorry that a regular person just don’t have the same reach??? Both are equally valid causes, but you simply won’t have the same audience as Thomas will. IN FACT HE RETWEETS THAT PERSON’S GOFUNDME SO THAT IT WILL HAVE A BIGGER AUDIENCE. Literally what more could you want? Yes, Thomas makes mistakes, but don’t we all? He admitted that he never learned to be financially savvy but he is working on it. Moving to another STATE in order to cut your rent by more than a half is a big decision and also a big step forward for Thomas. This is his first strike. I hope that he keeps his promise and starts learning to budget and save. If he ends up with a second strike, that’s when his credibility will be questioned.

Amanda Peters THIS. I totally agree. All of these people trying to come for him but I’m pretty sure majority of those same people have very little idea what it means to live independently and how to manage their own finances, so who are they to judge? 8k a month living in Los Angeles is actually very possible, especially as an influencer, a job which heavily relies on how well you maintain your appearance/aesthetics.

He’s not paying $4k a month in rent because of “where he lives”. He’s paying that because he’s choosing to live a certain lifestyle beyond his means. I live in Orange County, which is comparable to Los Angeles in housing costs, and I only pay $1550 for a 700sq ft, 1 bedroom apartment. It doesn’t have a gym or business center, dishwashers, central a/c and heating, but it is gated, has a nice pool, bbqs, a big laundry room that’s open 24/7 and we have 24 hour security and maintenance on site. Even if I wanted to live in a boujie high rise, with all the amenities, it would still only be, at most, $2500 for a large 1 bedroom with in unit washer and dryer, dishwasher, central air and heat, hardwood floors and marble countertops.

$4000 is definitely a choice, everyone knows LA is expensive but $4000 isn’t necessary so he either got a place for flashy reasonings or he’s over exaggerating out of convenience. I can’t even imagine how he spends another $4000 on top of rent, I pay all my own bills: rent, phone, student loans, car, insurance, utilities, food, dental and that’s still only a little over $2000 a month. And I live in Seattle so things aren’t cheap here either.

I gather he's renting a whole apartment for him alone and in case family visits, with no roomies, in a more expensive area that has security and less robberies (he's famous, he's gonna get recognized down the street), and that allows him to have a pet. Those are definitely way more expensive, but I could understand his situation since I doubt many of the people here need those requirements since we are less at risk?

I think a lot of this is just overreaction. If I donated for this cats vet bills, I would only expect the cat to get better. Even if he does live lavishly and needs to change his lifestyle, he obviously needed the money to save his cat in that moment. When you donate to someone, you have to be financially stable yourself, when you donate to someone you shouldn't feel owed a thank you or evidence that they spent the money properly. If you can't have faith that that person is going to spend the money on what they say, don't donate to them in the first place. I think it is rather toxic and manipulative to expect someone you lent money to once to make all the changes you think is best for them. That's not what you gave them money for, and if it concerns you so much just don't give them money in the future. They gave money to him to save his cat, that what happened. Case closed.
@coffopin8846
@coffopin8846 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of that. BUT you are owed proof that what you donated it for went to what the person said it was for. You wouldn't like to donate even 75 dollars of your hard earned money for something serious like a vet/medical bill only for that person to turn around and spend it on a bag, or taking friends out to dinner. Not to mention if it is a go fund me and the funds don't go to what the person asks for I am pretty sure they can get in serious legal trouble. Don't donate if you don't have/want to. But don't be naive and think that just because someone asks for your money they have the best intentions. That is childish.

As someone who did donate, I didn't feel scammed. I didn't see anyone say they donated and felt that they were scammed. He said if anyone felt that you were scammed, that you could ask for a refund.
