When I was a teenager I used to wonder what it must feel like to be as tough ,fast, skilled and brave as Tommy. Dude was damn near superhuman in my eyes.

Strange judgement. From what I've seen, James Kinchen won the fight. One knockdown, one point deduction for Hearns and Hearns was constantly clinching. I'm a fan of Hearns, but...
@garybey8963 ай бұрын
Hearns was a shot fighter then, obviously. His legs looked wobbly from the very beginning. That explains why Ray Leonard finally found the courage to fight him again right after this fight.

@@markkofi8522 You know, i hate to say that Hearns didn't train adequately because he always seemed to be in great shape but this monstrosity of a fight saw him start OK and then fade miserably...I've always thought he went into it 1) WAY underestimating Kinchen, thinking that it would be another Shuler type fight albeit at a higher weight class and 2) it was his first fight after the Barkley debacle and he clearly wasn't over it yet. Again, no excuses, he looked terrible and Shuler should have been awarded the victory, a very tough thing for me to admit.

@@thetommoody Do you think that age and the hard bouts had started to catch up with him? Surely Manny Steward would never let Hearns go into a fight without the adequate training.

@@markkofi8522 Yeah you're right...he was definitely on the downward side of his career with Kinchen. He did have moments afterward though...Leonard in 1989, Olajide in 1990 and probably his last great fight in 1991 with Virgil Hill. Thanks for reminiscing with me Mark...I'm the same age as Tommy and he was an inspiration to me...I was a 6'8" Light Heavyweight, believe it or not, and watched Hearns and learned a great deal from him back in 1980 and 1981. I was actually trying to get stronger for basketball when I started boxing 1979 and found Tommy to be my sort of 'guiding star,' much to my boxing coach's chagrin (You're an amatuer skinny white Light Heavyweight in Connecticut, you're NOT Tommy Hearns!) but I posted a 32-0 record at that weight. It was when I had to move up because of age (I couldn't make 175 pounds anymore at 22 years old) and found myself at 185 pounds fighting guys at 190 pounds coming down from 210 pounds that I felt real pain. Needless to say, I stayed with basketball but I always followed Hearns.

I believe this was the fight after The Hit man had been knocked out by Iran Berkley..And he got knock down and hurt in this fight with Kitchens which many thought he loss. But Hearns had learn how to tie a man up when hurt something that he should had done in his first fight with Learned he was winning on all score cards..This is when,I believe people thought Hears was done...After years of wanting this is when Learned gave Hearns a rematch but Hearns wasn't done fought Learned to a draw but the truth is he beat Learned...

Hearns should've been disqualified in this fight for holding, and the Hearns/Leonard II fight wasn't as cut and dried as you make it seem...the fight could've easily have been stopped in the 5th and 12th rounds as Hearns was out on his feet in both rounds...I think Hearns was lucky to get a draw...

@@cade9173 Hearns was a great fighter, one of the best. He just wasn't quite as good as the other two of the four kings (Leonard and Hagler). The only thing more I'll say about the 2nd fight is Hearns is lucky it wasn't a 15 round fight, or it would've ended the same as the 1st one....

My homeboy from San Diego should have won this fight. But politics came into play. James could have knocked hearns out and they would have thrown water in Hearns face and woke him up to tell him he won the fight. All because Hearns/Leonard II would pay more $$ than Kenchen/Leonard would have.
