That's pretty funny. The license plates in Washington, DC say "Taxation without representation" because DC citizens don't have representation in Congress, which is probably the most ironical thing ever.

3:30mins He was terribly terribly wrong. The English monarchy in the middle ages was Not a tyranny. The King governed by consent, and that is before the establishment of Parliament and the Commons in the early c.14th. And then he sites the aristocracy... but prey, what aristocracy, for example in the reign of Henry VII 1485-1507... Just how many members of the House of Lords were there??! Or at any time...

The Loyalists made these arguments, and there was a rebuttal to "Common Sense" called "Plain Truth," also published in Philadelphia. The US Constitution, in many ways, was a written version of the English Constitution, complete with a bi-cameral Congress (Parliament), the major difference in the USA being that the executive has a term limit and is selected by the people.

@@JeffreytheLibrarian As I understand things in 1700, the King of England had less power than the President of USA has ever had. And there were Prime Ministers of England which are thought to begin with Walpole in the first half of the 1700s who were elected and served for a limited period although there was and still is some flexibility in the system. The main difference with America is money buying candidates and votes in Congress. There are limits to how much any candidate can legally spend in UK General elections (i think it is about £50,000 per MP). And there is no legal money transactions allowed by lobbyists and as a result it is a relatively minor area of interest.

Good point on adding context re the English monarchy. However, to add context to your point. The colonies did not have representation in the British government to be a part of King George’s “consenting” body. Perhaps if the Patriots had proper representation they would not have revolted. Perhaps with representation or influence in the monarchy the colonies would not have felt it was “tyranny”. I submit, Taxation without representation is tyrannical and a major driver in TP’s take in Common Sense and the sentiment of the time.

I like to read primary documents to hear their words. We always mention "Common Sense," but we often never hear what Paine actually said. I have no intention of causing division. I'm just curious and probably eccentric. In fact, I have read King George's "Proclamation of 1763" in a separate video, which presents George in a positive light. I also plan on doing a video on 'Plain Truth,' which was a Loyalist response to 'Common Sense.'

People really listened to this essay. The first USA government had no executive branch. And it soon failed. I don’t like violence and I think I would not wanted the independence. But after your video on how persecuted loyalists were, it was bad for them too. There are no winners in violence.

The English Parliament rarely went to war (unless you count the lesser engagements in the Empire/Commonwealth). They were more interested in their interests.
