That song will always be such a special one....for Kris who wrote it....and for Johnny who was lucky enough to sing it as well. I think because it represented both their lives and the hardships they went through. Both came out the other side with their faith and families’ help. Such special people. Makes my heart ache.

My thoughts are that Kris was reliving when he was up in the balcony and Johnny was singing it for the first time on live TV which was also the recording of the song. Johnny said "stoned". Thus saving the integrity of the meaning of how the song was written. A very beautiful tribute from Kris to John.

I was very lucky to meet Kris in early 1971 when he was playing at a little NYC club called the Gaslight. Accompanied by the great Donnie Fritts and also by Billy Swan, he played this great song and others that were just as great and real. Somehow, between their sets, Donnie Fritts and I got into a conversation about our favorite blues and bluegrass. And then he went next door to introduce me to Kris, who was getting an extra shot or two of courage before going back on. Kris was with his lady friend, who was Joan Baez, then at her most radiant and beautiful. The man had magnetism, to say the least. Later she sang some harmony from the audience. And yet Kris was nothing but gracious and most helpful to me that night, spending some time with this student wannabe journalist to help me get my story for the college newspaper, when he didn't at all have to do that. Now I am struck down hard by his passing. And I still am enjoying his great real-life songs and the memory of his brilliance..

Wow. This performance had tears rolling down my face . He was having a hard time keeping his emotions in check in the first half of his song .. I heard John once say in a interview that this was one of his favorite songs of Kris's to perform . It shows how much Johnny meant to Kris and how much he actually loved him and respected him!!!I think the feeling was mutual with all the Highwayman Willie, Waylon, Johnny, and Kris. There will never ever be a super group like those four men . The best part is when you watch videos of them live you see how much they actually enjoyed playing with each other. Now this is country music, not that horseshit they play today. Two cords, my dog died, drank my six pack, got my four-wheel-drive stuck andLa Di Da Di Da That's bubblegum music. Pure crap

There's a special story regarding this song, Kris, Johnny, the phrase, "wishing I was stoned" and the TV Moguls of the time. So, singing this particular song must have been especially hard for Kris. I don't think I could have done it.

Part of the reason it's so special hearing Kris singing this is because he wrote it. I believe it released in 1969. And shortly after Johnny Cash made it his own. Kris & Johnny singing it on Johnny Cash's TV show is somewhere on here and it's so beautiful. Look for it.

I love the way Kris and Johnny sings this song..yes I'm like one of you said, it cuts to the bone..when Johnny Cash first came out with this song, I took a little 45 record of it and took my friends car and went to New York to see my girlfriend, and stayed upstairs in her family house and played it over and over for 2 weeks and after I had drank up all her dad's cabinet full of liquor I eased out of New York and tried to make it back, before Sunday morning came down again ❤️ 💙 I was gone for 2 weeks and only remember being there about two days 💙 life can be a bitch ❤️ and then several years later, I married one ❤️ 💙

Kris Kristofferson was an academic standout, even going on to become a Rhode’s Scholar, receiving a Master’s Degree in English Literature from Oxford University, England. His decision to write music in Nashville made him impoverished until he hooked up with Cash, and we are all richer for it. My first love is classical music, but all good music is appreciated by a wide spectrum of us.
