Very concise yet thorough covering of the differences. Initially I wanted the X-M5 (maybe I still do) but got the X-S20 and it does have good features, especially IBIS since only a few lenses have inbuilt OIS.

imo, XM5 and XS20 are designed for different target markets. The XM5 is more suited for fun, travel, and as a compact camera. It’s primarily aimed at people transitioning from phone photography who want to explore camera photography without spending more than $1,000 on a camera and lens. On the other hand, the XS20 is for photographers or videographers who prioritize features like an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and in-body image stabilization (IBIS)

I couldn't decide which one should i buy. Xm5 with xf16-50 f2.8 or xs20 with 15-45? I would be very happy xs20 with xf16-50 but price is too much for me. What do you think?

@semirvin the xs20 is the way to go then, battery life for video is absolutely noticeable

Id also say the XS20. I don't think you should worry too much about the kit lens since most people are going to replace their kit lens anyways

You can even get a used 16-50mm or even less expensive is the older but still great 18-50mm. Its affordable used. Also is has OIS so it's even better for stable footage

They both have the same auto focus on paper (as far as any firmware fiddling that might have changed something anything I say here could change tomorrow with another firmware so hard to give more of a rock solid answer on this question)

Great video! Worth noting the X-M5 is $799 new vs. $1299 new of the X-S20, if not having of those features is worth saving $500 and this is a secondary use camera I'd definitely go with the X-M5

XS20 is a genuine hybrid camera, XM5 is not (and never intended to be). XM5 is a great option if thinking purely about videography, with the additional funds saved from the lower price point, you have enough cash left over for a gimbal (thus trumping any IBIS). Simply put, if someone said to me "you have $1500USD to make a videography purpose rig, which camera would you start with, XS20 or XM5?" I think the answer becomes very clear. After the XM5 purchase you have enough left over for lenses, mics, gimbals etc, whereas the XS20 you're left with very little. I just find the lack of understanding of this (clear design) intent staggering tbh..

While I think a lot of your comment is very spot on. The short better will really struggle for lots of video BUT external power options can make up for this. And I personally don’t feel a gimbal completely makes up for a lack of IBIS, As I very regularly use both and can see the difference of gimbal footage with and without IBIS. You can shoot to avoid this difference, but having IBIS and a gimbal can speed filming up a bit specially when getting tired near the end of the day etc. Otherwise great points about the price difference on a set budget allowing for other gear which is far more beneficial than the xs20 differences provide

You can probably buy an used XS20 for same $ as an new XM5, but that abysmal battery on the XM5 will die rather quickly recording videos unless you go with external power.

As the X-S20 is an older camera, it’s readily available on the used market (with warranty), for a similar price to a new X-M5.
