Thomas, thank you for a nice afternoon exploring value sketching and painting planning. I took many art classes in college but never got this type of coaching. As a retiree I am revisiting my love of art and was struggling. With your help, I feel both freer to explore, and in control with some goals to discover my perspectives and feelings about design and my art. Thanks

Love your style Thomas. I note that you only use a couple of pencils to get the effect - when I started drawing my teacher implied the need for the whole range of pencils from lightest hards to darkest bolds but I rarely see any artist use them … what are your thoughts please?

Thank you for your sharing and generosity. I learned so much from this. What a difference by using watercolor paper too! I'm waiting for a photo of a couple benches across from the Georgian Hotel where my mother sat for a photo long ago while very pregnant with me. Then I can get obsessed about drawing and painting them. 😂👍 Good luck on your new adventures.

Good tips with guiding the viewers eye around the drawing using value. I like the directional streaks across the drawing and how you chose what to include and what to leave out. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you for your detailed explanations. I have several of your excellent painting videos. It is inspiring to learn how you draw. Love the emphasis on the light and dark and leaving out the detail. I have to admit I am drawn to the umbrellas and the arches - the lesson here is to practice restraint! And wait to find a scene in which I can make them my story instead. Thank you!
@thomaswschaller2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! - Nothing wrong with umbrellas or arches. Just need to decide when they add to an image - or when they might distract . Not all drawings or paintings have the same story to tell

Tom, thanks a lot. That is very valuable. The way you interpret the picture & set up the drawing is something I would like to see more from you. Because THAT is what I call design. You are showing the process of creation starting from a scene - a picture here - and you explain the choices you make. Even without aiming for an elaborate drawing (a sketch would have been fine), it is so helpful. Take a picture, explain your point of view, suggest one or a couple of possible interpretation. Most of the time, this process is not explained or not even shown , at least not in depth like you do here. Thanks again.

Thanls so much. Well, I certainly don't think I have all the answers - (there's never one "right" way) but I think it's important for me to try to explain why I choose to do whatever it is I'm doing. In this way, I hope it helps others to see that they can make their own creative choices

Lovely! I have one question, please! I have a huge problem with maintaining proportions of objects while drawing. It is recurrent. What would you suggest to help? I tried a grid and helped but is little demanding and the paper becomes a mess because of the traces. Thanks so much.
@thomaswschaller4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ermal . A grid is OK, but yes - it tends to smudge the paper. If you can avoid this in the final drawing, it is better. I suggest 2 things. 1. Do a little proportion sketch first to study shapes/value/composition before the final drawing. It will save you loads of time. And 2. In a week or so, I am going to upload here a video on perspective, value, and composition. I have a DVD on this - but I hope my upload here will help.
@ermalbino77154 жыл бұрын
Got the point. Study before going to the final drawing. This explains everything in my case. Get out the frustration in the study phase studying shapes and composition, then continue in a cleaner mode with the final drawing, since the idea will be much clear in your mind and you;ll be kind of walking into a known footpath. Thanks so much. 👍

Nah, I'm sure it doesn't. But anyway, drawing is one of those things that can improve dramatically with only a little bit of consistent practice
