Loved watching you draw--brought out some valuable tips that I would have never thought of. I also loved to draw as a child but life got in the way, for the most part, of developing that . I'm now retired, husband passed away, kids grown with families of their own--so now it's time for me. I also love watercolor--have dabbled in all media but watercolor suits me more.

Beautiful and romantic. Very much reminds me of a seurat drawing, or even Degas (whose drawings are magical). I absolutely agree that working from photos is awkward and easy to get lost in. But drawing from life has it’s own set of difficulties .. albeit not the same ones as a photo.

Tom, you had asked for questions, and I wondered if you would explain how and why you tape your paper in place. You seem to use many layers of tape. Thanks, Julia
@thomaswschaller4 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia - If I'm painting, one or two strips of tape all around is enough. I don't use all these layers in "real life". I did so here just to cover the board - it's a complete mess and I didn't want it to be distracting for the viewer... But I guess it was anyway :)

Can you please explain why you placed the horizon line above the people's heads rather than at the base of the further buildings where the street seems to end?
@thomaswschaller4 жыл бұрын
This piazza and street slopes down slightly away from the viewer. So the horizon is just below the person's head in the foreground and just above in the midground to reflect this slope. And the base of the building in the distance could not be at the horizon in this case - always some portion of it will fall below the horizon no matter how far away it might be.
@cindybaird95894 жыл бұрын
@@thomaswschaller Thank you, this is a hard concept as is the vanishing point. I have most of your painting videos but I think I need to get the perspectives one as well. I have a lovely photo with this same layout from a trip to Gourdes, I have wanted to paint it forever but buildings stump me and I think this is part of the problem:)

Have you tried using powdered graphite with a brush to “paint” a drawing?
@thomaswschaller4 жыл бұрын
Yes! - Just recently, I've been playing around with so-called "Liquid Graphite" It comes dry, in cake form - But when you add a bit of water, you can paint with it - similar to watercolor. It takes a little getting used to - but I really like it. I will try to do a demo here on it

thomas w schaller I purchased Derwent Graphitints and they are fun - love the muted colors! But I do find them very tricky to use. I guess they are tricky because I am not experienced with painting anyway! But I do love how they look on paper. I look forward to a demo!

I use the rough surface mostly for my watercolors these days. It is very textured . I can only get it from China or from Seniors Art Supplies in Australia. But they are working on getting a US distributor as we speak . You can get the cold press online from Opus Art Supply in Vancouver BC - but they don't have the rough
