At my work equipment goes down and needs a little more then just maintenance to get it back up and running. I tell my bosses I can break it any worse then it is, it’s already broken. We had a bearing lock up with borrowed piece of equipment in a remote location. We had our client ready to ship it back to the maintenance shop and the maintenance shop cancelled the shipment and asked to ship the repair parts to location because we have the most experienced people here. It took a little rigging but we got the old parts out and the new parts in. We also performed three ten hour run in sections running with new oil and filters. Later it was recovered that that the unit had been stuck by lighting at it’s old location, Before we got it and it was repainted. Thanks for sharing. Watching you and others on KZbin have taught me tips and tricks to look for in repairs. Thanks for sharing.

The power scraper is a useful tool in the right hands, it's faster than hand scraping and takes less effort. And Keith is an accomplished scraper, especially with that Viax power scraper. Have a good look folks, it really takes a long time to get this good. That being said, the finished appearance of the power scraper is not as good as what can be done by hand. We always finished the last several passes by hand, using a narrow blade and short strokes; pinpointing. Each scraper had his own signature look, we could tell who scraped a piece by i'ts appearance.

Scraping is always so satisfying to watch How are you going to scrape the V on the table? My thought was to build a simple wooden fixture so you can put it up at 45 degrees and then put the straight edge on one side of the V and scrape it, then flip the table around and repeat on the second side.

Hello Keith, The force needed to move an object is a function of the weight times a coefficient of friction for those two surfaces. Surface area is not a factor. The high spots and wear aren't what is in play here. The table weight is not significantly changed but you are altering the coefficient of friction between the surfaces by introducing a lubricant and the ability of the surfaces to hold a film of lubricant between them. dave

In theory, 2 larger solid flat surfaces will wear longer than 2 patterned flat surfaces. The reason is, more surface area equates to lower PSI at the contact areas. Lubrication is another matter, there are too many variables to say whether lubrication always makes up for higher pressure contact areas.
@dalexanderw11 ай бұрын

@andrewcrawley738411 ай бұрын
The flanks are the reference in this casting and those flanks are trueable to the single surface. The concept im talking about is in 3 directions of movement and the flanks control 2 directions and thats all you need for a plane and so a tool that rolls in the flanks and moves across that surface does control the grinding of the surface when the pressure is applied square Is rigid lapping 😅

Keith, I worked with a grinder exactly like yours. Just FYI, under the table was awesome (like yours) but where we had major problems with ours was in the vertical ways and the cross feed for the wheel head. Apparently there were two different options for these grinders, one was with a bronze bushing in the wheel head or two carrier bearings. The bronze bushing is really hard to work with, to much clearance, not good, to much oil, not good, and vise versa, or a combination of either. Plus it's hard to find 14 inch wheels with a 5 inch bore. I tried everything I could to fix it I still think it was between the bushing and the wheel head cross feed. Good luck, I certainly hope you don't have the bushing. I'll be watching, thanks.

@@joenicotera2991 I was talking about the Thompson grinder....
@markharrison962211 ай бұрын
@@joenicotera2991 the grinder I operated had a magnetic chuck. The upper structure of the grinder was bolted (if I remember correctly) to the base(table ways and coolant reservoir) and the drive motor and wheel head are all on the same shaft. But, the wheel head and motor are on a set of gibs perpendicular to the table (chuck). In that casting of the motor and wheel head was (in our case) a bronze bushing. Looking at the technical manual, you could order it with either double bearings or a bushing. I personally think that the gibs on the wheel head where (and probably still) worn out, so as the wheel head traverses out across the chuck it would not be flat and because of the excess clearance in the bushing, the wheel would rise up and over the work piece. In effect, just walk right over it, in both directions. This would not give consistent finishes and inconsistent thickness on the finished part. I hope I explained myself better...😁

Curious to see how everything is parallel but given that the first surface only took a few passes, it looks like it's not going to be too bad. I'm wondering why the V-groove is downward, like a valley. Wouldn't that accumulate all the dust and chips?
@charlesblanton100811 ай бұрын
Hadn't thought about the v-way collecting debris issue you mentioned, but a very good point. I too was wondering to what extent scraping (thereby lowering the v-way) would affect the angle of contact on the front flat way. If an extreme amount were removed from v-way it would obviously be an issue. But as you mentioned, If just taking tenths off of things, I assume the effect is negligible on the flat way. I would imagine, if you wanted to get truly finicky, you could blue up both surfaces under the table after the v-way is done and see what everything looks like and touch up accordingly.

Soon as my kitchen is finished I'm going to cut up and weld some old RSJ into 3 surface plates a foot square each and give this scraping ago. Sure hope I'm cut out for it as then I can make my own mini lathe to make miniature engines and all sorts. See if this hobby can be done on a trim budget.
