As a career youtuber, the beauty of this profession for me was not having to answer to anyone or let them "lock me out" or any of that shit. Over the years, I always wanted to write for some website or magazine, but I never saw anyone writing in my style or with my willingness to consistently lay my thoughts out exactly as they are without concern for formula or for an audience. The beauty of youtube is that I can make things exactly as I want them to be, say exactly what I like, and people can take it or leave it. I'm paid by the people who want to hear what I have to say, not for anything else, and that's the most ideal system I can think of.

Thorin, I can't even express how much I agree with you. Once there was a time in my life people (''professionals'') expected me to act like I liked everyone (colleagues) and was interested in their lives, even the bullshitters, even if I didn't like someone or was critical about someone's thinking/doing. I couldn't do it. It's not me. I'm about expressing what I really think and feel, of course to a certain degree, but mostly so.. I did try acting a few times, because it was expected from me, but it was too tiring. I question almost everything in life and I think that's a good trait. What I don't question though, is that more people should question themselves, their behaviours, their 'superiors', the system, etc.. Conservatism and closed mindedness could one day mean the end of the world. We need to be critical and stand up for our our own REAL thoughts and feelings in order to save ourselves and make the world a better place and to inspire others to do so.

Watching this I am reminded of a quote "First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me." While the topic at hand is nowhere near as drastic, there are some parallels in terms of the results of inaction that can be discussed. While some may not see the importance of speaking out, I am of the opinion that the points in this video make a solid argument in terms of the balance that is brought through the ability to critique and form a coherent opinion, instead of just buying into that of the group. That however, does take courage and among a community of pro dominant teens, it makes sense that "peer pressure" would play a big role in communities such as reddit. This makes me wonder what the future has in store for a community such as this one. I admire tremendously the form that you, Thorin, present your views in an organized and coherent way. This causes your followers to consider perspectives that may be otherwise alien. You have taught me much in the ways of organizing ideas, which in turn has helped me tremendously in terms of analysis. For this I can only express my gratitude.

I think it's just a sign that esports is in its infancy, there's not much money in it so people are afraid of their careers ending. It's like the socially awkward fellow that tries too hard on a date: he has so few dates that he is overly-invested and acts phony in any one date.

PiggiesGoMoo This. So much. The industry is still really young. Everyone knows everyone. Professionalism is still something a lot of these people are experiencing for the first time. It's growing pains. And it's never gonna grow out of that without people being free to criticize.
@Niwlitz9 жыл бұрын
Jordan Yee people are free to criticize, but the ones who are putting the money in don't want "no-men" to fuck up their profit and that's why you need to go on youtube and watch Thooorin if you want criticizm. I, for one, don't watch faceitleague twitch to educate myself, I watch it to have a good time. I watch Thooorin to get the "no-men" point of view and in time both combined will lead to me having my own opinion. Of course the fact that esports is still burgeoning is contributing to the "yes-men"-attitude, but it will, on the big stages, always be more of a "yes-men"-vibe.. yes is fun, no is exhausting.

Unfortunately, when things start to get big or are proven to be profitable, there becomes a substantial percentage of content producing population who's only goal is to take advantage of maximum gains and furthermore only creates a stronger foundation for "generic" material and the mentality of "what the people want". A great example of this is taken from the mouth of the author who wrote "The Notebook". The book was and may possibly be one of the greatest successes of modern literature in terms of sales and the writer admitted that the only thing they did was follow a formula. Only writing what was understood to be what most people wanted.

Giving them what they "need" is sort of right, but that motto applies more to news organizations I think. In America, cable news is such utter trash now because it's doing precisely what you say, giving people what they "want" to hear and not what they "need" to hear.

One thing that I regret when it comes to talented esports contributor like you or Richard Lewis, is that you seem to struggle with deciding if you want to be a journalist or a personnality. Both are fine, but this choice matters because expectations are different for each role: humble (so you don't overshadow your own story) and professionnal -or- provocative and famous. However whatever you do, please avoid mixing work and personnal feelings. This also will help our industry.
