Thor, a 106kg 4 cylinder 4L engine capable of 1500HP for circuit racing.
How can a head gasket cause cylinder liners/sleeves to drop? Oskar from Elmer Racing explains to Andre some of the issues the PR Technology team overcame to set a new class record and claim outright victory at the 2018 World Time Attack Challenge in the RP 968.
Thor is no stranger to this channel having boasted a potential 1500HP output for circuit racing and 3000HP output for drag racing applications last time we caught up at WTAC, and this year at less than that goal the car and engine managed to smash the class record and become the 2nd fastest car ever around Sydney Motorsport Park.
Also discussed are some of the differences in the demands of circuit racing vs drag racing on engine blocks and components, aluminium expansion, oil flow considerations as the engine gets larger in capacity, the pros and cons of under piston oil squirters and more.

Thanks to HPA for another great tech chat! Not many would have known about the big dramas leading up to #WTAC2018 without this. Doing new things on is not always rainbows and sunshine. But knowing your work, and making the best of the situation at hand, can sometimes allow you to take home the win!

@@hpa101 The interviewer sounds like he genuinely is an engine tech head. Not a lot of interviewers/channels, if any, actually delve in to coolant pressures, causes for liners to slip, engine dimensions and expansion, etc. Probably the first interview in a long time that actually made me want to listen carefully.

Every interview I've seen Andre do is done with intelligent curiosity and respect to the interviewee. As a tech interviewer he is without peers. I always walk away from watching HPA posts having learnt a lot about the topic they've covered, and realising I knew far less than I thought I did at the beginning, and especially so when he has the likes of Oskar Elmgren under the spotlight. As always, thanks HPA and keep doing what you're doing. P.S. That block is as much a piece of art as it is an engineering feat.

Cheers mate! We do have a chat before we flick the camera on but an interview is never going to be as smooth as a prepared script that someone has looked over multiple times before putting it on camera. Even then, we have plenty of outtake reels of Andre and the team here from course material filming, which sometimes is a word for word script 😅 Oskar knows what he is talking about and is a very good communicator especially if you consider English is not his first language I reckon though. He also was a great podcast guest: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIPFdZuiYpJneqs www.hpatuned-in.com Cheers for the support too! Andre hopes to keep doing content like this for many years to come and no doubt we'll chat to Oskar a few more times too if we're lucky 😎 - Taz.

If im hearing correctly, the head was intended for a "flat gasket" but a gasket with cylinder "rings" was installed. The gasket compressed until the embeded rings contacted the tops of the cylinder sleeves, at which point the act of tourquing the headgasket forced the sleeves to drop?. ... Great vid as usual gents! (saving for your whoooooole package as we speak. 😍 #alloftheeducation )

So the cylinder liners were machined to sit higher than the engine block on purpose, but because the mls gasket had grooves around it that caused the liners to sit? And the solution was to machine the engine block including the liners flat or I got something wrong? Thanks! As usual amazing content!!

This is probably in reference to the nature of Ethanol and the additional quantity required - In many cases it can leach down into your cylinder walls and if its bad enough, dry them out causing friction, heat and glazed bores. If you don't have oil squirters your more likely to encounter these problems regardless of the coating.

High Performance Academy the wrong gasket was used that cause the sleeves to drop which caused a leak. Why did replacing the gasket with the same spec solve the issue? Or rather why did the first gasket fail if the second one didn’t? Is it because the first gasket was over compressed?
