In this sense, dancing for rain makes all sense just as the seasonal dancings and drum beatings because vibration stimulates not only the mycelia but also all sorts of critters living underground and providing a proper frame for plants to grow from and the water to come forth from above. Beautiful take that made me more inclined to study Thor, now decolonized of the ruling class prejudices.

You touched on in the beginning of the sexual relationship between the storm god and the primordial serpent, this can be further expressed through the view of many ancient cultures of mushrooms as phallic symbols; some cultures even believed mushrooms grew where lightning had struck
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger Ай бұрын
Indeed, and it's curious to see that the areas hit by lightning, are often associated with fertility in many cultures, or some sort of gift that is then used for fertility and magical purposes. Also, megalithic cultures have a great emphasis on phallic themes connected to the telluric forces, which is something that continued to be in the minds of many European farmers throughout the ages, even to this day, associating menhirs with the fertility of the soils. Throughout the 1900s many European farmers were struggling with several authorities due to the removal of menhirs to be displayed in museums. Most farmers did not want the menhirs to be removed, afraid that the soils would wither without them. In some cases, that's exactly what happened by the removal of such megalithic monuments.

The part about water and Thor crossing over the river to travel between worlds reminds me that two ways to make certain kinds of hallucinogenic mushrooms somewhat less toxic involve either removing the water (drying the mushrooms) or dissolving the fungal spirit in water (e.g. boiling the ground up mushrooms with a few drops of citric acid for 30 minutes before straining and adding milk/honey to taste).

My wife, a San Carlos Apache woman, bought a book some time ago, Myth's and Tales of The White Mountain Apache. One of the stories in particular centered around a boy named Monster Slayer son of The Sun. In the story the boy is gifted with certain items from another entity to help protect him and he learns how to pray from them. This helps him while undergoing tests from his father, The Sun, who is quite literally trying to kill him through these tests. I was pretty astonished about the similarities between this story and the Nordic myths.

This is a new idea for me. Thank you for introducing me to it. It's close but not identical to UPG I have and have always had about Thor in spite of finding nothing about it in the lore. I won't mention what it is. I'm just waiting for academics to discovering a couple associations I have with Thor that would make sense if he were a mushroom god. I'm just too afraid of the backlash I'll get online for sharing the UPG, so I won't. Congrats on the 500th video, btw. I really enjoy your channel.
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger Ай бұрын
I do understand what you mean, and the internet can really be a place that completely drains our energy, as there's a lot of people who take upon themselves to dictate what we should or should not think. Which is strange, as they are strangers who contribuite with nothing to our well-being. Also, I often make a separation between the academic and UPG, because the integrity of scientific work is fundamental to help us reach the truth as much as possible, and because UPG in terms of spirituality should not be limited to what academic work can show us. In our own spiritualities, our experiences are our own, and they are not invalid just because science is not capable of proving it. Besides, as someone once said to me: Every religion originates from UPG. I have a video on "The Importance of Unverified Personal Gnosis", and if you haven't watched it yet, I'll leave the link here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2WzlmWiadN2o5o Best of luck in your spiritual endeavours! Some things have to be kept a secret. There's no need for the world to know everything that goes on in our private lives, and that's okay. Many blessings to you!

The nail in the coffin for understanding animism and the power of the 'gods' is giving them a human identity. Humans cherry pick States and traits for what they must look and behave like as humans. Humans have danced, cursed and prospered in regards to weather, sky, sea and land 'gods or devils' farmers, fisherman etc have a deep understanding of the weather and the earth. Thanks again Arith. 😊

I adore your animistic views on Thor. Truthfully, your channel is one of the reasons why my practices have switched to a more animistic angle than trying to be reconstructionist...because what are we really reconstructing? I have always seen Thor as a god of tenacity. He wasn't a war god, but he was who the gods sent to get things done. A finisher. I have always felt more drawn to his aspects as a god of the earth itself rather than an oaf with a hammer. I feel he, like Freyja, have been given a lot of disservice when it comes to how I feel they "really" are. Not to mix pantheons too much, but I have often felt them to be more akin to the Irish deities The Dagda and The Morrigan. Not to get too deep into the weeds, but a lot of the aspects I have found with my UPG paints both of them into a much more "of the earth and fertility" than Angry Dumb Guy Smashes Stuff and Pretty Lady Goddess Is Used As A Prize/Bargaining chip. Thank you as always, for your nuance, especially regarding one of the deities closest to my heart and practice.
@ArithHärger

Thank you very much for your words and feedback my friend. I do get what you are saying! If we tend to see the gods as persons, in the animistic sense of it, and as forces/energies, we do recognize the same sort of energy in others. In the end, in our practices, much of what we do is precisely working with such energies and how they are manifested in the world and through us, but also through the contact with such persons. An exchange of thought, which by itself is an exchange of energies.

"Mycorrhizal fungi" also grow into the roots of plants and trees allowing for forests, and the trees help to create precipitation and more rain, which which the fungi love. The water also helps the fungi decompose a tree struck by lightning, or after a forest fire the fungi help to colonize the waste land and getting it growing against, turning the remains back into soil to recycle into the forest. So also of course farmers could not help but be aware of the mushrooms growing in their cow fields.

interesting as always. in etruscan religion, the very little we know of it, Tinia (a storm god analogous to zeus or Jupiter but the name atleast is thought linguistically to be uniquely etruscan) was apparently not the only god who could use the lightning bolt... also, one of the very few surviving examples of etruscan religious literature is the Brontoscopic calandar, basically Brontoscopy was the art of divining by observing thunder (or i guess lightning? confusingly bronto is greek for "thunder" and scopy literally translates as "to see"). the text as its come down to us (in the greek language) is surprisingly complete and details what auspicious or inauspicious effect might be divined from thunder on a particular day... eg 6th of September, as i write this, it says: " If in any way it should thunder, there shall be power among the women greater than [what is] appropriate to their nature." ...no joke where im at in england its been pissing down all day, i aint heard thunder yet but im avoiding all contact with women today just in case 🙅 sorry ladies... anyway yeah looks like etruscans put alot of importance in not just their storm god but the lightening bolt/thunder clap itself as a means of communicating divine intention or something, which i think is interesting...

It's interesting to see that Thor, despite the great focus on fertility and as a storm deity related to the earth, isn't a Vanir, but he is not quite Aesir either. He ends up being a "threshold" deity, and as I've pointed out, being the only Nordic deity that can freely walk between the realm of the divine and the realm of humans (and other realms), much like Loki, the trickster spirit, and both coming together on many adventures. Thor is far more complex and interesting than just a brutish, impulsive farmer, hehehe.

@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger Ай бұрын
Indeed, it is true. There seems to have been a great syncretism of deities into the figure of Odin, and not just Eurasian divine conceptions, and not just Scandinavian local ones. Odin has too many similarities with Hindu and Iranian deities. Even the presence of Wotan in Germanic belief sytems, and of Odin in Nordic ones, always give the impression of Odin being quite "foreigner" to the entire religious and divine conceptions of these geographical areas (which many modern Heathens consider Odin to be foreigner indeed). But no doubt, the shamanic themes of Odin fit well into circumpolar traditions such as Siberian and Saami, as well as into Classical Hellenistic and Latin conceptions.

Wouldn't Odin fit more a role of mushroom guy? Odin associated with colour lightblue - colour of early dead body - death associated with underground/earth and with his constant Midgard travels, it all kinda seems more earthly related and similar in some aspects to Veles or Cernunos. I'll explain further. + I don't know if it's been proved or not, but I want to mention claims about berserks (odin cult) taking magic mushrooms during rituals. Also during cold and wet weathers mushrooms can also grow in and on dead bodies during first days, when body is still relatively pale, which could have been seen around post-battlefields. Týr was probably more of a sky diety, atleast once. Tiwaz - Teus - Zeus - Deus. But Odin being even maker of life, could have been present in or assosiacet with all of life. And fungi are our oldest relatives, older than plants. Odin/Life(Fungi) + Jord(Earth) = humidity = atmosphere = Thor(Storm) (KHOLDKHNT/SPITZBORG)

Personally I wouldn't read the rest of Sophie Strands mushroom-take on Thor. Thor simply represent the Orion Star Constellation where "he" is revolving and "fighting" all the other constellation figures with his also revolving hammar in his hand. Odin is of course a much larger figure in the night sky, A celestial figure which mythically constitutes the cultural omnipresent and all-knowing Alfather and Father Time in the night Sky. Omnipresent, because this Milky Way figure also revolves around the celestial Earth axis pole. There is nothing personal connected to these figures - it's only the human way of myth making which adds human like attributes to the celestial images.
