Great video essay, but I would like to make another point. You’re wrong at 3:50. Thor isn’t trying to save his people, they weren’t in danger. He was trying to save the Frost Giants. Loki was trying to destroy Jotunheim, not Asgard. This makes Thor even more heroic, since he was trying to save a race of people he had been taught to hate his whole life

1) Thor has still the prettiest ending in the whole MCU. 2) More important, in the first movie, Thor doesn't save Asgard, he saves Yotunhaim, the same world he was trying to start a war with at the start of the story, which shows how much he matured. 3) Funny as it is, Ragnarok doesn't make Thor any deeper.

I thought that Helas "why" was crystal clear. She was raised as a warrior to see Asgard conquer the realms. Odin failed to enlighten her and banished her. But when she returned her "why" never changed so she was driven to fulfill what had always been her ambition. It's all Odin's fault if u think about it lol
@jesusmora93796 жыл бұрын
it expands on the earlier movies, in the first thor, laufey calls odin a thief and a murderer. odin was evil at some point, and when he changed, he had to stop what he had created (hela), he imprisoned her and kept the secret from asgard, but the other realms still knew the real history (like it happens in the real world too) and were waiting to get revenge. hela is odin's past, what he was before becoming benevolent, a bloodthirsty tyrant who calls herself a god and does whatever she wants whenever she wants, and she likes killing and fighting. it's a simple character but works more like a force of nature character, like the joker.

That Guy you do understand her motivations, but she still seems fairly one dimensional compared to Loki. Loki wasn't always evil, he was just a boy who wanted to be love, and he felt neglected, which is why he turned evil. Hela on the other hand was always evil, even before Odin banished her, she was basically just evil moustache twirling villain who wants power, as Odin once was. Odin was simply willing to change, Hela wasn't. also, Loki's goal is simply to gain the love of Odin, which is extremely sympathetic and relatable. what's Hela's goal? just kill everyone cause she wants power.

Couldn’t agree more. The scene where Thor proves his worth is still my favorite scene in the MCU and still gives chills. I think the Russo’s feel the same because they restrained third comedy so that is was a perfect mixture. They even mimicked that scene with the Thor wakanda scene. If you watch the hammer flies out of the bifrost the same it did out of the lightning and returns to show Thor in all his glory catching it. The problem with ragnarok was too much comedy and the disrespect for the warriors three. Korg was great but Thor should have smashed his face for making that joke when Asgard was destroyed. The one thing it does get credit for is changing the whole magic is science thing. There’s a good video on it by someone. In previous Thor movies Odin says “we’re not gods” but in ragnarok Dr strange is magic and Thor Loki and Hela refer to themselves as gods

2:59 Thor thinking about his home and then 3:04 he looks at Jane. Does this mean he is in a conflict in whether to settle on Earth as a simple man or return to Asgard as a God?
@simonegreco19586 жыл бұрын
I mean that's a really compelling argument, and I totally see your point, but I don't agree. It might be because of my opinion of Ragnarok (I'm one who grades it the best in the trilogy), but bear with me. The structure of T1...is perfect. It presents the normal world, then throws the character into an adventure where he can have an arch. He grows, comes back and the normal world changes. It's textbooks material, really. But I feel like something is missing, like an emotional core. Probably isn't the best term. What I mean is that I don't see WHY Thor changes, or WHY does he falls in love with Jane. The movie gives us a perfect structure of Thor is arrogant - Thor is thrust on Earth - Thor learns humility and falls in love with Jane - Thor returns triumphant and proves he has grown, but it doesn't gives us specific moments that make the journey resonant. Yes, Thor sacrificing the chance of seeing Jane again to save the Jotuns, the ones he tried to kill in the beginning, it's a great plot point...but I don't know where Thor learned to be this heroic, and I don't know when or why did he fall in love with Jane, I don't see the romance, so it doesn't hit me as much as it should. Basically, what I'm getting at, it's that.the movie has potential but everything on Earth kinda squanders that. Thor heroism in the Destroyer scene really comes out of nowhere, because Thor on Earth is a static character. The only moment of development he has is the Midpoint, when he fails to lift the hammer, but we don't see him questioning himself after that. I'm not saying I needed monologues or detalied dialogues of how he understands that he's been arrogant, but there is nothing in the movie that suggest growth, or an epiphany. Also, the parts on Earth are very visually flat and boring And about Ragnarok...I feel compelled to defend it. I feel like its comedic tone might be threw some people off and cloud judgement. I know this feels kind of pretentious and condescending, but I swear I don't want to be, But I really disagree about some points that you made. Thor is NOT nonchalant. Just because he makes a few more gags than usual doesn't mean he doesn't care. Everything he does is to protect Asgard and its people. Loki is NOT a punchline. You nailed the point of Loki...he wants to be loved and accepted. And Ragnarok stays true to that. The first scene with him shows that. He had the kingdom at his feet. He could have done anything with it, but he chooses to put up a stupid play and a statue...so that people could love him, remember him the way he wants. And the finale builds on that: Loki still does what he does because he wants to, but he has the chance to be a real savior to Asgard for once, to EARN his people love, and his grabs it. In the first film he makes up a plan to make himself look good...in the third he has a real chance, and he fights for it. I mean, I liked this. Also, I don't fully get the complaint about Hela...yeah, her motivation are not fleshed out, like, at all, but T3 is not a movie made for that type of villain, like Zemo or Loki. She's a colonizer. We've had real colonizer. I don't find her hard to accept, because I know what drove those real people and I just project that on her. Maybe it's the wrong thing to do, or maybe I say this just because I liked Hela as a villain...Idk. But I'm gonna give you a thumbs up nonetheless. This was a good video, and you made your point of view very clear. Thank you if you've read through this wall, and keep it up

Hey thanks for the long comment. You pointed out a lot of things I never noticed about Ragnarock (Loki's Character Growth), and I'm definitely going to rewatch it with your view point in mind. I do think you are correct about comedy throwing people off (myself included). I think some of the film is genuinely hilarious, but a lot of jokes don't land for me, and end up taking away from the deeper elements of the film, for me. I'll definitely rewatch it in the upcoming months, and comment back here if I have any new thoughts. Thanks again!

Yes, all of this. Thor's "character development" was really sudden in the first movie. He was only one failure away from turning into a nice, humble, selfless hero? Ehhhh.... What mostly bothered me about Thor/Jane was that we were supposed to believe they were this great love story and oh what a great sacrifice it is for Thor that he won't be seeing her again! After knowing each other for about two days.... Yeah, no. Didn't buy it. The third movie literally starts with Thor trying to stop Ragnarok in order to protect his home and people and then Thor's entire motivation throughout the movie is to get back to Asgard so he can save his people from Hela. Seriously, how is that not caring anymore? Hela's motivations were obvious, they just weren't complex. She was raised as a conqueror all her life until Odin had a change of heart and decided to imprison her when she wouldn't obey him. Once she was free she saw herself as the rightful queen of Asgard since she was Odin's oldest child and decided Asgard would resume its former imperialism. It's unfair to compare her to Loki anyway, because he's basically the only good villain of the entire MCU. Ragnarok is far from prefect. How they handled Bruce's anxiety over forever turning into the Hulk was pretty terrible, tbh. But for the first time ever I actually cared about Thor and it's definitely not forgettable to me.
@simonegreco19586 жыл бұрын
Err...I don't know. "I have to disagree with Thor being all about Asgard" you can, I guess, but I don't see how: in the first scene he meets with Surtur because he had dreams of Asgard burning and he wanted to prevent that; from when Hela threw him off the bridge his only goal was to get back on Asgard and gathering allies to fight her. There is not a single point in the movie when "beating Hela and saving Asgard" is not his primary objective. Just because there are more jokes now doesn't mean he has no goal. Saying that his behaviour with Hela and Surtur is the same "unworthy" behaviour he had in the first Thor is WAY exaggerated. In the first Thor he was an homicidal maniac with the desperate need of proving himself. In Ragnarok he makes a few self-aware jokes. "You are just the worst" and invading an alien planet with the intention of subjugating an entire race are NOT the same thing. And it's not like "It's that the best you can do?" said to Ultron is really that different. Thor has always been a little of a braggart. In Ragnarok everything is just in a more comedic tone because, well, it's a comedy. But that doesn't mean Thor won't fight. He fights. Both Surtur and Hela. He fights for Asgard. That is undeniable. Also, the point of Thor is to be humble and not go in search of war. Not to specifically respect your enemy. Yes, he saves the Jotuns at the end, but that's more to bring the narration full circle. And I'm not saying it can't be the case. It certainly can. It's a nice point of view. But Surtur threatened to lay waste to all Asgard, and Hela did lay waste to it, in addition to actually killing asgardians. He has absolutely no reason to respect them, no reason not to rib them with a few, honestly harmless, jokes. "Thor has never been a self aware joke" Just because something wasn't tried out before, doesn't mean they shouldn't try it out "Thor just shouldn’t be this self aware and meta" Such rule does not exist And to be honest with you, I feel like the comedy did serve the character, at least for me. It made him feel more real to me, more interesting that he ever was before. I didn't really care for Thor before. He felt like Hemsworth trying to play a character based on the comics. But with Ragnarok and now Infinity War he feels like an actual, realized and definied character that Hemsworth help build, and is now one of my favourites Keep this in mind: making jokes at the expense of your enemy does not mean not taking their threat seriously. If you consider this, maybe a few of your complaints will go away.

@myfriendscallmecoach99115 жыл бұрын
It's just the inconsistency of Thor's character that bothers me. There is no actual flow in his Trilogy whatsoever. His character arc is just rinsed and repeated but is made to look "different" with another plot device tool (Ragnarok's being his power). And this time his character has an even greater Ego he never learned from and he spews out lines for comedic relief. The Jokes didn't take me out of the film, there were some that didn't land, it's just when they would cut from scenes with Thor to the ones with Heimdal. Especially when Thor is seeing what Heimdal is experiencing. What is the tone supposed to be? One moment it's a comedy, next its trying to be serious. Nitpicks aside by all means Ragnarok is a very entertaining movie, and I consider it to be better than most in the MCU. I just never really understood why it had such a deep following.

Erik is deep in the science. His childhood was filled with the Scandinavian myths. Watching his realizations throughout the film is my fave part. From an unbelieving scientist - to being able to call that mjolnir is coming before having any sight or sound of it in the moment he truly believes.

I basically agree with you. The problem is that Thor 2 and Avengers 2 were so weak films for Thor that he needed a renewal. And this was definitely successful with "Ragnarok". In my opinion, "Thor" is the better Thor movie, but "Ragnarok" is an overall better movie.
@halliehurst48476 жыл бұрын
What I love about it is how small scale it is. It’s just two brothers having a fight. Yeah there’s larger scale consequences, ie who gets to rule Asgard, but the fight itself is emotional and grounded. It’s one son who’s always felt less loved acting out after he finds out he’s adopted. Another son who’s had everything handed to him now having it taken away. And a father who seems to have spent a lot of their childhood putting them against each other. There’s a lot of self discovery, Thor’s is good and Loki’s is bad, that fuels this fight even more and it never strays from the two of them for long.

Kenneth Brannagh(?) Should have directed all 3 Thor films. I felt like he had a vision in mind when he did the first film. He actually made Loki & Odin deep & good. After Avengers Loki became a joke & Odin was just there waiting to die. I feel like Kenneth would have taken TDW to the next level & even tho I enjoyed Ragnarok & had fun but the comedy & music selection really took away from the fact that literally his best friends got killed & entire world was destoryed. I think Kenneth would have handled that much better. Honestly, the most memorable moment in Ragnarok was Thor beating Hulk's ass.

I get why people didn't like Thor 1, but if you just stop and think about his actual character journey in thor 1 then think about his character in thor 3 and 4. It was really absurd, he's supposed to be a 1500 old god who was cocky but then got humbled. The newer movies just make him a stupid joke. Infinity War was closest to his actual character, so will give the russos credit for that. Taika didn't give a flying fk, he just wanted to mess around and make him a clown.

In all honesty my liking of the Thor movies goes in order of release: 1 then 2 then 3. Ragnarok was just. . . it gives no emotional weight. SO MUCH happens. Thor's friends dies, Odin dies, Asgard is destroyed. Thor gets power upgrade. And we feel nothing. Thor doesn't even seem to. Ragnarok hides behind spectical and humour. It's fun to watch, but as movie that matters so much to MCU it fails to make it apparent.

Thor ragnorak felt like they got carried away from the primary villain and plot with the grandmaster and whatever. And he just happens to stumble upon Hulk and the last Valkery and Loki all on the same planet. And it completely glossed over the death of his friends and we never see his reaction. But it was cool to see him unleash his full potential.

I always loved the first Thor movie the best. I didn't know how to put it into words, but I think ever since the First Avengers movie, the studio just kept treating Thor like a running-joke that they didn't know how to use properly. And yet, instead of giving us the caring and growing Thor from the first movie...we just get Jokey-Hoakey-Socially-Awkward "I am Mighty" Thor... Plus, the first film has a sense of Triumph through adversity; and the musical score reflects that; when Thor is deemed worthy and Mjolnir returns to him, that music is SO epic. I don't understand why so many people dislike the original one, but it's honestly their loss.

“Thor” is a far superior film than “Ragnarok” for so many different reasons, a lot of which you mentioned. The bottom line though is that Ragnarok’s charm (and I did enjoy the movie... and then forgot about it) is based almost entirely on comedy. Where is the God of Thunder who learned the lessons of camaraderie and humility in the first film?... almost entirely subjugated by Hemsworth’s new found comic chops I’m afraid?... the less said about “The Dark World” the better.... it was “oh bother, mom has been murdered... “ Thor always works best for me in Kirby’s faux Shakespearean high velocity “crackle” mode.. and “Thor” was the only movie of the 3 that even tried to pull that off!... Great video, smart editing, good analysis... but what about The Destroyer?? By FAR the best Kirby imagery on film to date (except maybe Hela’s helmet)!!!
@thunderturtle16156 жыл бұрын
bradley hunter Ragnarok actually made Thor an interesting character, sometimes neither Thor or the Avengers ever did. Just because its jokier and has more improv does not mean that the film isn’t greater. In Thor Ragnarok you see Ragnarok, the end of Asgard as a place, and it completes Thor’s story Arc, finally placing him where he’s been struggling to be for the past 4 movies he was in, the King of Asgard. In the MCU now, rather than being a shakespearean pretty boy, he is an actual tragic character, a defining characteristic of Shakespeare’s plays, having lost everything and now doing everything he can to destroy Thanos. Thor Ragnarok is not a Thor movie if the first one is what a Thor movie is, it is a movie about Thor learning what its like to lead and forgetting the past, and looking towards the future.
@bradleyhunter62126 жыл бұрын
Thunder Turtle : Ah, Mr Turtle, or may I call you Thunder?, I think you’re viewing Ragnarok through Thanos colored glasses. When does Thor behave in a way that says he has emotionally grown or even “ feels” ANYTHING in this movie?...perhaps you mean “Infinity War” cause he barely reacts to anything in “Ragnarok” besides his haircut!
@thunderturtle16156 жыл бұрын
bradley hunter Mr. Turtle was my father’s name, please call me turtle. And just because there isn’t a significant change in ideology doesnt mean theres a lack of development. Throughout the movie he has to deal with the loss of his father and the fact that his brother wishes they would never see eachother again(though Loki makes the choice to return at a later time and help in the final battle). He goes through assisting banner, and finding that he has to lead the Asgardians because all other alternatives would be worse.
@bradleyhunter62126 жыл бұрын
Thunder Turtle : Turtle, I’m afraid we are just going to disagree as to what constitutes “development”. To me, and that certainly doesn’t make me correct, development is not events taking place, but rather a character reacting and changing with those events. In my opinion, Thor’s lack of any visceral reaction to events (not just accepting them rather stoically) would indicate he has developed as a character. He did this to a far greater degree in both the original “Thor” and in the current “Infinity War”....but hey, it’d just an opinion and I actually did enjoy “Ragnarok” a good deal. I just found it kind of shallow emotionally and much more concerned with providing the “yuks”, which it did wonderfully well.

The real problem with the MCU at the moment is the humour, that while good. Undercuts the gravity of the situations and while the movies have a deeper substance, which is why they are good still. They tend to fail to make you leave the movie feeling like you learnt anything, unlike phase 1 and the first 3 spider-man movies. Yes even with 3 sucking there was still gravity and a lesson to be learnt in that film. The marvel movies really need to get back to the essence of what it means to be a hero and give you something to think about when you leave the theatre. Black panther almost did it but the flashiness and the humour in the middle of serious moments undercut the weight of the film like all the current MCU flicks. You understood the tragedy of the villain but didnt understand what the hero learnt about heroism, only what he learnt about his father and the consequences of his actions.
