now that no way home is out, the mcu trilogy of spiderman movies feels like a cohesive character arc for this version of Peter Parker. Each movie brings him closer to the reality of the consequences of his double life. First with how miserable he made Liz, second with Mysterio betraying him, and now finally making him grow as a superhero with SPOILERS the death of Aunt May in no way home. Even more so with losing both Ned and Michelle with Dr. Strange's spell at the end. The issue with homecoming is literally because they backed themselves into a corner by having Stark bring up Peter in Civil War. Because of that introduction, Peter was now a significantly carried Spider-Man, which they got rid of in far from home as Stark's death leaves Peter with self-esteem and identity issues. Mysterio's contingency plan makes Peter the most vulnerable he's ever been, which makes no way home the ultimate Spider-Man film, building the Peter Parker we know from the comics and other media over the course of 3 movies, culminating in a finale that really blows the MCU since Endgame, out of the water. Not to say that no way home invalidates this video, but I feel like they definitely capitalized on their rough intro with Spider-Man in the MCU.

One of the fundamental characteristics of Peter Parker is self-improvement. He makes mistakes, terrible ones that'll stay with him forever, and accepts them to his very core. As a result, he gets a little better, he improves and grows. Yup, totally typed this in 3 seconds.

Agreed Homecoming as a film is a great movie, but as a Spider-Man movie it's pretty flawed. Like in Spider-Man PS4 shows how you could make a good Spiderman story with all the themes like responsibility and balancing his hero and personal life without needing to give him an unnecessary high-tech suit or being dependent on another hero.
@dasik84
@dasik84 5 жыл бұрын
In Spider-Man PS4 he is 23 and has 8 years of experience. In Homecoming he is 15 and has 8 months of experience. Seeing the difference? And he got the AI only because he hacked the suit. Tony didn't want him to use it.
@IndecisiveJR
@IndecisiveJR 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Dasik 8 months is still enough time to be at least competent. Spider-Man in the comics didn’t take almost a year to figure out how to be Spider-Man. Sure he wasn’t perfect but he was way more competent than Holland. By 8 months he should be able to at least catch a car of just random criminals.
@quietdemon8138
@quietdemon8138 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Dasik compare the consequences though insomniac’s Peter by the end should be completely shattered as a person ... but he picks himself back up, puts on the costume and goes back to protecting the city and granted while Holland’s Peter does the same at the end the other element of consequence is virtually nonexistent.
@themadtitan7603
@themadtitan7603 5 жыл бұрын
@@dasik84The A.I being there in the first place is the problem, when I first watched Civil War, I didn't see Tom Holland, I saw Peter Parker/Spider-M and when Tony gave him the suit I thought he just gave him a better looking suit and advanced the already impressive technology created by Peter but then came Homecoming we have 500+ web combinations ? Am okay, Instant kill mode, ah okay ? An then an A.I the suit just becomes an Ironman suit re painted as a Spidey suit even if it was only part of the training wheels protocol but still it's there.
@themadtitan7603
@themadtitan7603 5 жыл бұрын
@@dasik84 Also let's be honest even though he goes through some consquences in the film it never truly affected him or his loved ones I mean he literally just walks out of detention. Compare that to the consquences he goes through in Spiderman 2 or Spider-Man PS4. If they wanted it to add comedy in the film they could have added the humorous abundant of consequences that Alex speaks about in this video.

When Peter first meets Tony he says "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you." "Everything's fine" Yup, that actually sums it up. That's an idea/phrase that shouldn't be anywhere CLOSE to Spider-Man/Peter Parker. He is in a constant state of struggle, confrontation, heartbreak and attempting to overcoming said challenges. That's what makes him interesting and inspiring....and...a person. Homecoming is fine as just pure entertainment, but the true Spidey he is not.

I can't find my old comment, but it went among the lines of "I hope they fix this, on the next movie." I gotta say. I have made a severe and continuous lapse of my judgement. And I do expect to be forgiven. I'd rather watch where peter is happy and nothing happens. Instead, of seeing him deal with the fact that his girlfriend/wife had sex with another man and had 2 kids, while he constantly gets hated by all his friends and loved ones. If I wanna see some realistic tradegy, where the mc can't take a break, then I'd read my diary. Im sick of being reminded that the world is a shitty place. When I just wanna see a man who can lift cars and crawl on walls, be a hero and possibly die while everyone knows he's a hero. L video. L statement. Me now press dislike so me satisfy past self urge.

Iron Man was too much involved in the story. The reason I loved the first and second Spider-man movie as well as Garfield's Spider-Man was because they were self made men. They designed their own suits and lived their own lives the best that they could, in those movies. They made mistakes and learned from them. They didn't have a rich guy telling them what not to do(Peter turning down Mr. Osborn's offer for job is one of the best for that reason) and that their aunt is hot. I love Tony Stark and in MCU he's my second favorite after Captain America, but he didn't need to be in a Spider Man movie. I want the focus to be entirely on Peter and his struggles. Plus, the movie was too high school teen drama for me. I mean back when I was 15 or 16, I would've liked a movie about crush problems or peer pressure but at 23, it's hardly relatable. Plus, high school movies age poorly as every generation of teens struggles with something different. Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2 is still very relatable to me because his struggles are greater and beyond himself. Plus, Peter has a very deep relationship with his aunt in 2 which I loved very much. In this movie, it seemed too shallow and unnecessarily comedic.

Its because Homecoming isn't a Spiderman movie. Its an MCU movie with Peter Parker in it. Its honestly kinda disappointing. All your points are definitely true! Of course there's also the point that the story and characters were pretty much completely ripped off of Miles Morales' story, which is why some characters in the new spiderverse movie weren't as fleshed out as they were supposed to be. Spider-Man hung upside down after saving them while being told by Karen to kiss Liz; The scene where Tobey kissed MJ while hanging upside down. And the scene where Liz was the last one trying to get off the elevator, but the elevator loses support, and Liz falls. Peter is lucky to web her hand to catch her; Garfield failed to catch Gwen in the clock tower. I don't think this was an attempt to piggyback on the fame of the other movies, but to just give people a bit of a flashback, which may be why the ferry scene was so reminiscent of the train scene with Maguire. I disagree. Homecoming was a fun, great Spider-Man movie. The fact only one person dies in it tells me a lot. The story is about spider man stepping out of iron mans shadow, and the final few scenes. Where he is under rubble, ready to give up, and he uses his will to lift it up it a great comic moment and it works well here. It shows that Spider-Man doesn’t need anybody else’s help, it proves himself as his own hero.

The number 1 thing about Spider-Man: He is MARVELs whipping boy. For every good thing he does, the universe punishes him in one way or another, This is what makes him human, he has flaws, he has to juggle his night life with his real life. Unlike Tony who lives for the thrill of being a hero, Peter does it because he has a responsibility. This is why Far From Home is an infinitely better Spider-Man movie than Homecoming. Because his tether as a human and his responsibility as a superhero pull back and forth, drawing and quartering him, with a massive consequence to be explored in No Way Home.

Honestly Homecoming should have all been set BEFORE Tony went to go recruit Spider-Man for Civil War so that the movie would have been about Peter and his life, his relationships. We dont need to see his origin story or Ben's death again but all the other major heroes got their own solo movies and movies that built up their catalog of characters before being brought into the Avengers fold, and this story could have been about Peter going from trying to stop petty crimes to bringing down a villain that flew under the Avenger's radar and once Peter stopped him that got the attention of Tony who comes to speak to him at the end of the movie. All of that Civil War backstory montage could have been shown during the credits and then his reveal to Aunt May leading into the next film, and really with how much she worried about him already they shouldnt have just made her completely fine with it in the second film and had her go through more of an arc herself. These movies are more focused on Peter helping to build up the MCU and not really the MCU complimenting a SPIDER-MAN story. Hell Homecoming could have just been "Ironman 4: Tony gets a kid".

And people keep talking about how this movie is comic book accurate when it isn't that much either. For instance, MJ stands for Mary Jane, not Michelle Jones and Flash is supposed to be threat/bully, not a nerd who looks like he would be bullied. Those two characters were absolutely terrible in my opinion. Oh, and Aunt May wasn't a very good character either in my opinion. This movie didn't even have good action scenes for me. This is a huge disappointment for a Spider-Man film. This movie was made to be a comedy movie and not a proper Spider-Man movie is how I feel. In the movie, Peter makes several noble choices like the one you stated, but as the movie progresses, it doesn't really deal with how they define the character. The dude is a teen trying to make money, teens are edgy and insecure, that's why he was relatable. It's what keeps him from being Iron Man 2.0. It's also a key part of his character. You lose a lot of his development when you forget that teens AREN'T happy go lucky, that they CAN be impulsive, that they DON'T look up to authority. Especially when they're poor and working outside of the law for money. That's what his creators thought was a cornerstone of his character. Him getting into the Avengers took years and multiple attempts (I think he wasn't official till the 2000s), in the meantime he had grown significantly so by the time he finally joined he wasn't a high school student brushing shoulders with Vietnam vets. @@Aiasmor Even as a 15 year old, Peter is supposed to be someone who grows up fast and has many responsibilities to take care of. If you've seen Spectacular Spider-Man, he's also in high school and is around 15-16 years old. Yet he has to worry about helping Aunt May pay bills and getting a job to do that. The whole reason Spider-Man was made as a 15 year old superhero as opposed to an adult one was to show him handling adult responsibilities as a kid. To show that a kid could do all the stuff only adult superheroes did back when Spider-Man was first created, when teenagers would only ever be sidekicks. The world isn't supposed to go easy on Peter because he's a kid. That takes away a huge part of what makes his character special from his high school days. MCU Spider-Man seems to be headed in that direction now from the looks of it though so it seems that even they've heard the complaints people have and are taking steps to correct that.

Ditching Ned at the party dose have consequences, he doesn't get to hang out with them, loses the chance to gain popularity, gets in trouble with Iron man and almost dies. If anything he's a great Spider man for ditching the chance to be cool in order to catch some bad people. Endangering his friends at Washington helps the Vulture realize that Peter is Spider man, thus putting his and his family's lives in danger. Ditching Liz makes her break up with him and stop hanging out with him, and Peter ditched her in order to stop her dad. In the comics, Uncle Ben is really insignificant. He doesn't even say "With great power comes great responsibility", that line is just narration. To me, the _most_ defining characteristic of Spider-Man/Peter Parker is that he is responsible. More than his life being miserable, he's responsible; it informs all of his behavior. Peter has had moments in which his life goes well; maybe happily married, but he's still responsible. Peter has briefly given up at times, so his most defining characteristic isn't that "no matter how many times he's knocked down, he gets back up". Pay attention to what motivates him when he goes back to being Spider-Man; it's due to feeling the responsibility of being able to help and not doing so. Peter Parker is relatable, but he isn't defined by being "the everyman", he's defined by learning the lesson Uncle Ben tried to teach him too late and constantly trying to "save Uncle Ben," whether the "Uncle Ben" in question is Aunt May, his best friend's dad, Gwen Stacey, or a stranger due to knowing that this stranger is "someone's Uncle Ben". People are who they are when they are in the dark. When no one knows and therefore no one can hold Peter responsible, he still holds himself responsible. It's easy to be the hero when you are rewarded for it. Some heroes don't get rewarded, but they get indifference; their praises aren't sung. Spider-Man often does the right thing, but doesn't get rewarded and doesn't even get indifference, but instead, the universe kicks him in the teeth for it, which of course makes him want to quit, but he knows that when he doesn't do anything, "Uncle Ben dies all over again". Even when Peter is crippled, he still tries to help in one way, or another, due to having had a lot of experience being a hero by that point that he feels he can do something, even if it's not the full Spider-Man schtick. I love and relate to Peter Parker due to his nerdy, intellectual side, but I respect, admire and seek to emulate him due to his steadfast responsibility. Spider-Man is the kid who, due to his difficult experiences, manages to be more responsible than the adults around him. He lost his mentor, feels lost and inadequate, but actually manages to outdo pretty much everyone in being a good, responsible, caring hero, even though he usually takes a long while to realize it; living in imposter syndrome until he does.

The most negative point of MCU spider-man is his motivation is tony stark not uncle Ben. He feels more sad for tony not for his uncle... EDIT - people who are saying that we have seen uncle ben die twice and don't want to see that again. I agree that we don't have to see that all things again and again. But it seems like MCU version spiderman never misses his uncle or never loved him. In comics too they never show uncle ben dying again and again but they show emotional and sypathatic connection between Peter and his uncle in other ways. But MCU Peter and May never mentions Ben...

I feel the exact same so glad I watched the video. I hope the studio recognizes some of these flaws. Maybe after avengers 4 things will be different and they'll grow his character into his more traditional character traits, for example his sense of responsibility. Even though there were no real consequences he still could have showed more personal distress in those situations, ie instead of talking to his ai about how amazing liz was he could've asked if it was fucked up to ditch his friends? I want to see a captain universe spider man like version of spider man, overburdened by his responsibility all the time, I guess with the suit he'd be capable of taking on bigger baddies, with more power comes more responsibility

One of the fundamental characteristics of Peter Parker is that he can never have a good life. He never gets a break. That is why he is such a beautiful character.
