@samuelstephens69042 жыл бұрын
I think that’s the problem though. Gorr is such a strong concept as a villain, but none of the other elements in the movie compliment him. There’s is basically no relationship between him and the other characters. He doesn’t really challenge Thor in any thematic way. He is not a foil. He is only after Thor to get the axe. At least with _Multiverse of Madness_ Dr. Strange and Wanda have thematically related personal hang-ups and it all ties into the the multiverse gimmick. Korey is right when he said this movie is too loose.

From what I've heard from other reviews (particularly Jeremy Jahns' review), a trend that I've seen that leads to Thor 4 (while still enjoyable) not clicking with people as much stem from _Thor: Love and Thunder_ having TOO much jokes, to the point where it detracts from the film? That was always a lingering issue I had with _Thor: Ragnarok_ , where I liked the humor but it's excessive focus on the humor clashed with the dramatic tone it was trying to convey the other half of the time. Often times, it felt like you were watching two different movies that were mashed together. You had the gravitas of Odin's death and Hela conquering Asgard be undercut by all the jokes that Thor would make that undercut that gravitas. I think that similar to that, in Thor 4, the issue seems to be rather than Thor simply making jokes, it feels like he becomes the joke? That it feels like people are laughing at him rather than with him? That if Taiki Watiti (an immensely talented director whose usually really great at balancing tones of comedy and drama, as shown in _Jojo Rabbit_ ) was really going to commit to the humorous tone, that they should have the antagonists and stakes match that rather than feel like Thor and the main antagonists are from 2 different movies? While I get the desire for more from Gorr, I think it was strategic to limit his conflict to only the things that mattered to Thor. This wasn’t about making Gorr a monster out massacring the innocent. Otherwise it would have made the ending far less palatable. The point was to strengthen his position by using thors perspective to show how the gods had become arrogant and lacking of redemption. Spoilers: In the end thor doesn’t disagree with Gorr’s feelings about the gods. If anything it takes thors add gives it completion. The arrogant god, Thor, waiting to be king, renounces his thrown, loses everyone he cares for, and renounces his place as a god…recovers from his fear of love and commitment and finds a new family in the child of someone the gods had betrayed. It’s stretched at some points but it’s a beautiful progression for him. Watching the first Thor movie again, thor at the beginning is everything he hated about Zeus.

While Phase 4 may not be "popping" like it should be, I don't necessarily believe they're not working towards something. I just think that there are so many more moving pieces now, than there were in the previous "set-up" phases, that the endgame either isn't clear or obvious, the way the hints to Avengers & Thanos were in the previous 3 phases. It really does feel like they're still introducing the new pieces and the new status-quo's. It's a juggling act because they're introducing new characters, *while* pushing forward with new situations for the established characters/formerly supporting Avengers. And yeah, after the high's of Phase 3 and the one-two punch of "Infinity War" and "Endgame", it's tough to go back to these movies that have relatively lower stakes; that really was the feeling of the first 2 phases, particularly after the first "Avengers". While that movie teased Thanos, "Iron Man 3", "Thor The Dark World" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" didn't necessarily move the needle of getting us "closer to Thanos". Big difference though is that in the 2008 to 2012 era, we knew that we were working towards "Avengers", and everything after, we're building to Thanos; now, we're just getting the pieces and it's all really speculation as to where the story is going to lead to, and how the individual characters are gonna play into everything. And with MCU content dropping every month to two months on D+ & on the big-screen, I definitely understand the fatigue. Doesn't help that with each series/movies, it feels like a lateral move, rather than a raising of the stakes. On the other hand though, this is what comic-book storytelling is: moving pieces across different titles and characters. So as a comic-reader, it is cool to see that sensibility brought on-screen. However, I totally understand the frustration and fatigue for wanting that endgame story *now* ; and yes, things are tougher when some of the individual stories aren't particularly strong or have a lot of urgency to them. Definitely bummed to see more mixed reactions to recent MCU efforts (though I am enjoying everything to differing degrees). Can't have a winning streak that long I guess. Still looking forward to "Love & Thunder", but expectations definitely lowered a bit.

@@gcolbyp Oh yeah! I saw that a while back. That was a good video. Sean Chandler put out a good video too about what his worries are about the MCU at this point. Given what Korey & Martin have said both in this review, and in more recent MCU show/movie outings, there definitely is a growing frustration about where the franchise is heading, and it's understandable. But as the Reel Rejects and others have pointed out, it's not as "directionless" as people believe. I think a major issue is that these individual projects are largely just "okay", and not "bangers" that we've supposedly been accustomed to seeing (despite a good number of Phase 1 to 3 treading that quality line as well). But maybe part of that response is the fact that the MCU is covered SO MUCH ground with their formula, the new stuff may feel somewhat stale... or maybe even off-putting even with the ones that actually swing for the fences a bit more. It's just an interesting transitional period for the MCU right now. At least Kevin Feige has openly acknowledged it, saying that things will be revealed (more than subtly) with the next phase, but he definitely is putting a lot of faith in both casual and die-hard fans for sticking around. It really is something when even the die-hards are questioning the direction, but in all honestly, over 10 years of stories, the franchise has earned the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, I absolutely hated it… And this is from someone who very much enjoyed Ragnarok. I know people harp on the MCU for “forcing comedy” but this is the first time where it actually felt they were going non-stop with the jokes and it got exhausting and it wasnt even half way over yet. Gorr was the biggest disappointment. Bale was awesome but the way they just called him the God Butcher but they didnt bother to show him actually out there killing gods was a big “wtf” along with him just randomly popping up at Earth. Yeah. This movie might be worst than Dark World for me tbh…

This movie is easily worse than Thor 2, by a landslide. Malekith was a bland villain but at least he was consistent. Gorr had the potential to be great, but there were so many scenes throughout where he was a totally different villain from one scene to the next, as if two or three different writers couldn't agree on how Gorr should be portrayed, whether as a serious and understandably-tragic villain fueled by anger and hatred towards gods or as a Pennywise-type who is just evil and enjoys tormenting and/or torturing people.

I think people are asking too much of Marvel. Some of what Korey wished for in this film was utilized in MoM. The villain getting in depth back story, showing why they were dangerous, etc. But that did not resonate extremely well with the audience. Gorr, much like Kilmonger, Ikkarus and Hela showed up, fucked shit up, then got put down. I think what makes the villains more appealing is if their point of contention is relatable. Ikkarus was not relatable at all. Most of us dont care if a Celestial is born. Especially if it would kill us. Kilmonger was very relatable (especially to minorities) in his fight against his perceived oppressors. That was the main difference.

For me, this movie was a complete disappointment and I think Marvel has lost its touch... The comedy was way too much, repetitive, and really not that funny nor exciting compared to Ragnarök and some of the jokes you could see coming. There were some cool moments, but it was few and far between. It feels like they've sacrificed story and character development for constant quirkiness and comedy. Like the Eternals movie, l feel like people could have skipped this movie and not really be worse off. Sadly, I probably liked Eternals more than Love & Thunder and probably laughed more in that movie too. Except for one or two things in the movie, pretty much everything you need to know is already in the trailer.

In the comics, Gorr is a fantastic and complex character. He is honestly one of the best villains in a very long time. And this film completely dropped the ball on him and his story. I was very disappointed. Read the comic instead for the real essence of Gorr and for a strong compelling story.

I don't really get this whole idea that Phase 4 doesn't have 'a plan'. The multiverse is clearly a link for many of the movies and shows. And honestly, I can see them wanting to give the audience a break after the metric ton of interconnected plot and heavy stuff at the end of phase 3. Heck, I'm pretty sure that's what I heard a lot of people ask for, to back up on the overarching plot for a little bit and give us some stand alone stuff. And they are.

I am...beyond annoyed with the MCU right now, to be honest. Since his intro, we've had THREE other Thor movies...and yet not one of them featured the single most worthy wielder of Thor's hammer; Beta Ray Bill! He's been considered one of the most popular Thor characters in comics, if not one of the most popular Marvel characters in general among fans. Yet the closest thing we get to him being in the MCU is a lousy statue on "Not Sakaar?" Seriously, I've tried to ignore a lot of Disney and Marvel's dumb decisions lately but this is just pitiful

The MCU has been knocking it out the park for over a decade. With the exception of some of their TV shows, Eternals and Black Widow, they’re still in a good place. But I somewhat agree with you on this one. I love Taika Waititi but was hoping he would lean into more of the Thor stuff and slightly less of the Taika comedy this time around. Beta Ray will definitely show but it’s probably for the best that he wasn’t in this one. I think he could actually replace our Thor down the road.

I haven't seen Thor 4 yet but looking at the viewers from my favorite youtubers, and professional critics. They are highlighting the concerns that I had when I saw the trailers and clips, like I dig Ragnorak but the jokes just undermine the seriorus moments. Hearing that Thor 4 increased those, makes me concerned. And its bad enough in my eyes that the simplified the Gorr design, but hearing him that he as less screen time scares me. I'm still seeing the movie and maybe something will surprise me, or dumb down the flaws.

To me this movie was pretty bad. It’s so comedic that nothing felt like a threat or felt like stakes were high. Nothing seemed to matter much. Gorr was severally underutilized. The God Butcher should’ve been a big deal and was wasted. It was funny so much to a fault to me.

Post Script: Oh yeah! The songs! I've been awaiting for that one song by, "KISS", to be used in one of Thor's movies, but so far, no such luck. My friend, went on about some band and some guys, but I didn't know who he was talking about. You brought up, "Guns 'n' Roses", but I don't know the member's names! I don't know which songs that I've heard played in the juke box at, "Pizza Hut", were theirs! What I remember about that group's name, is the good pun that made me laugh out loud, when the band was new. It was in a sitcom on, "CBS". There was as episode about, Softball, and one of the teams was, "Nuns 'n' Roses"! 😂 But anyway, I hoping that, "KISS", will get to appear in one of these big budget movies, even as just an, "Easter Egg", as you guys call it, if not as characters. I know people love Ragnarok but I honestly felt like Thor was occasionally a little too clownish as a character, and the script itself couldn't hold a single damn moment without making a joke to rush or ruin it in that movie. Love and Thunder took that problem and dialed it up as high as they could for me. Thor is literally a clown, all of his MCU-spanning growth is basically gone and almost every opportunity for a joke, good or not, is seized immediately. Most of it doesn't land, at least IMO, so I was mostly just annoyed and ready to be done with the movie past the hour mark. Each entry in this Phase makes me less and less interested in continuing the MCU journey.
