This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Thor: The Dark World, released in 2013 and directed by Alan Taylor. Loki was the very clear highlight to this MCU Phase Two film for me! Overall, I felt the story was a little confusing and underwhelming, especially the final battle with Malekith and the Dark Elves. That being said, the visuals in this were fun and I thought the actors all did a good job, but I just wish the story and villain had been a little stronger. I'm super stoked to see what happens with these characters in the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though! Make sure to stick around to the end for my full thoughts and review! Thank you so much for watching!

Non-spoilery explainer: It's not mentioned in the movie, but Taneleer Tivan/The Collector [Benicio Del Toro's character] is in fact immortal and slightly younger than the age of the universe, he's called The Collector because that's basically all he's done across all space and time (hence his museum setting) - this means that if you have something that is of interest to him, it is of universal importance, very literally. Like mondays with Kaiielle 💚

With a franchise as big as the MCU, you start singling out movies as "skippable" for the overall experience. Thor 2 is one for a lot of people, and I can see why, but the problem (which is actually an anti-problem) is that Loki is quite possibly at his absolute best right here in this movie. You get to see him as a villain right from the start, and unlike the Avengers, where he plays the maniacal wannabe dictator, he gets a lot of character work and range here that solidifies him as one of the best characters in the series. It's really cool that even the most "mid" Marvel movies still have incredible redeeming qualities like that.

So, fun thing about Loki. They had originally written and filmed it to where Loki _actually_ died, but when they did test screenings... much like you, literally no one believed that he was actually dead. Not simply that they didn't want him to die, they didn't believe he died. So, rather than fight that, they changed their plans and filmed those scenes to show that, yes, he is alive. I feel like it was the right decision. And yeah, Darcy... she was very annoying for me through this one and the first one. The whole "Mew-mew" thing... bothered me a LOT. Still, love this movie, and love what they did with Loki in it 💚

I totally get how you feel about this one, I'm very indifferent to it myself. I have seen it about a handful of times on its own, it is not one I think of putting on when I'm looking for something to watch again. Not to say I would switch channels if it ever was on TV, just a whole lot of meh with this one. Granted, Thor is not my favorite hero so that doesn't help. @@radicalreactions1633 As a psychiatrist, Loki IS a narcissist, and he has the typical narcissist upbringing where he has to constantly compare himself to a better sibling. Narcissism isn't a disorder, it is learned behavior over a long time of unmet needs at a young age, and it can also go away because of that, which is what it does over time for Loki, especially in the Loki show due to people actually counting on him and believing in him for once. They want and need him, and that is what cures his issues. Before, his "birthright was to die". It's really the fault of family dynamics that cause him to be the way he is.

You asked why it feels like every movie has a hand sliced off. It was a conscious decision. Every movie in phase 2 has an arm chopped off as an homage to Star Wars, especially the most famous moment where Luke gets his hand cut off in Empire, the 2nd Star Wars movie, hence doing it in phase 2. I like this movie more than most. Maleketh is given crap for being a 1 dimensional villain, but that was the point. He was nothing more than a brick wall to smash into. The true story belonged to Thor and Loki. That being said, if I had never seen any MCU film and someone showed me this one, my response would have been, "This is the worst film in the whole franchise? Then sign me up."

I think I know why this film falters. The first one, despite whatever shortcomings it may have, was directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is famous for making films based on Shakespeare's ouvre, and he directed that movie with the same seriousness and gravitas he would have any work of the Bard. Dark World, however, was not directed by Branagh, and it really shows. Branagh really has this way of making every scene feel epic and important that Alan Taylor seriously lacks.

I wanted to apologize for my disrespectful comment earlier. I didn't think you'd be a content creator that looks at your comments. That being said, I suppose I should share my thoughts on the film and why I acted the way I did. Thor: The Dark World IMO is one of the most underrated MCU films ever made. Not to say it's the best. The villain is lackluster and the humans other than Jane are kind of whatever, but other than that, this film pretty much outdoes its predecessor in every way. From the less predictable/generic story, to the much stronger character development, the better direction and cinematography (don't even get me started how bad the cinematography is in the first film), the more impressive visuals and action scenes, the greatly-executed emotional scenes, the Asgardians having way more screentime, Thor and Loki having way more screentime together, even Jane serves more of a purpose. It has never not baffled me why so many people say it's one of the weakest MCU films, especially when other MCU films like Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Eternals, Guardians 2, Quantumania, The Marvels, and Multiverse of Madness all exist (which are all extremely messy and far worse), and pretty much improves upon the first film (which is only slightly above average at best) in nearly every way. And it certainly has a lot more thought and care put into its story and characters than Ragnarok ever did, which is by far the most overrated MCU film if you ask me. I hope you can at least understand why I feel this way, as I've been pretty much defending the film for over a decade to the point where I stopped caring about what I say. I deleted the other comment btw.
@kaiielle

I accept your apology. That said, it baffles me that people think they are "safe" to be rude because they assume the creator won't see it. You can look at the comments section on any of my videos and see how many comments I "heart" and how many replies I leave. I am very active with my comments on my channel because it's one of the best parts of having one. But I have reactor friends who don't engage much in their comments at all, but they still go in and READ them. So they still see rude comments too, even if you don't get acknowledgment from them. So if you have nothing nice to say, it's better to just click X on the tab and move on. We're still real people with real feelings at the end of the day. Your comment wasn't all that bad, it gave me a chuckle. I've had far worse - people who have torn me the fuck apart and really just shown their own hurt and insecurities to me. Projecting. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and I'm glad you love this movie. I don't know that I was doing it at the time of putting out this video, but for the last few months here on the channel, in the outro of every reaction I ask people to tell me why they like or don't like the movie I just watched. I invite the conversations from both sides. Because I don't always love every movie, so in those instances I really enjoy hearing why people love it. And vice versa, if I love a movie and someone goes "Meh" about it, I like to get their perspective. Naturally, most viewers of reactions are going to hope people feel the same way about the movie as they do. But they also don't want fake reactions. But then they get upset when someone feels differently about the movie. There's no winning really. Some of the best reactions I've watched to my favourite movies have been where the reactor didn't feel the same way I did. Maybe that's just me tho. Anyway, hope you have a great weekend!

In a universe of movies, they can't all be winners. I will say that I appreciate this one more than I did when I first saw it, having re-watched it since then. I would also posit that both Loki AND Darcy make it tolerable 😄 (Sorry, I'm just unabashedly team Darcy. Her "miumiu" never gets old to me.) Gosh darnit, also forgot: 💚💚💚

In that post post credits scene of Jane and Thor embrassing, fun fact, that was Chris Hemsworth's actual wife filling in! Natalie Portman couldn't be there at the time for some reason and they had his wife briefly fill in.. Needless to say it is probably the best kiss in the MCU

This was one of the more tumultuous entries in the MCU behind the scenes. Natalie Portman pushed Disney to hire director Patty Jenkins to direct the film. If that had gone smoothly, Jenkins would have been the first woman to direct a Marvel movie, the first woman to direct a superhero movie, and the first female director in movie history to be given a budget of over $100m. However, Jenkins ultimately felt that she could not realize her vision within the constraints set by Marvel Studios, and left the project. Portman was upset at Marvel's unwillingness to budge, and only completed the film as a contractual obligation (whether or not said obligation ends here, I won't say, so don't take this as meaning anything about future movies one way or another). As you may know, Jenkins later went on to achieve all three goals, just swapping Marvel in the first one with DC, when she made Wonder Woman in 2018. I believe this is one of the weakest entries in the MCU. One big change I would've made would be to remove Odin's narration from the beginning of the movie and have those scenes play out as actual dramatic sequences instead of plain old exposition, which I think would have helped make Malekith seem like more of a character. Any further explanation necessary could have been moved to the middle when Jane is on Asgard and learning the story herself via the illustrated book. I also think the movie just looks oddly cheap compared to the original, which had such beautiful ornate set design and rich detail when they were in Asgard, whereas Asgard in this, to me, looks like Star Wars prequel greenscreen to me most of the time, and then there's that long sequence set in the middle of nowhere, which is just visually boring. I do find the portal stuff fun, and I enjoy some of the other comic moments in this, but it's not enough to save it from falling toward the bottom of the pile. That said, at least they stopped bleaching Hemsworth's eyebrows. Fun fact: Portman was unavailable when they filmed the shot of Thor and Jane kissing at the very end, so Hemsworth's real-life wife Elsa Pataky stood in for her, since she is only seen from behind in the kiss shot.

Your point about excluding the narration at the start and having it in the middle would have probably helped me out a LOT more with this! Even while editing this reaction, the narration at the start felt so abrupt and sudden and like trying to shove a ton of information at me all at once. Thanks for your comment!

@@kaiielle I wrote the above comment after the reaction was over but before I watched the closing thoughts. I'll also add that Anthony Hopkins almost declined to return for this one. I think he did the first one mostly as a favor to director Kenneth Branagh, who of course has real cred from directing Shakespeare films and stage acting. I think if he was disengaged here, it has to do with the fact that his character has to do all of this exposition (an actor's least-favorite material).

Worst Marvel Movie up until Infinity War to me. I didn't like the whole trying to explain Magic with Science thing. The villain was lame. And Odin too. Overall the balance was off imo. It sets up a lot of future stuff though, so i guess you needed to watch it.

Thor: The Dark World was one of the few hiccups of the MCU. Malaketh was LAME, Selvig's insanity was merely annoying and kinda stupid and it just...it didn't really work. And if your mystefied, they pulled a fast one on The Elves. Loki projected the ILLUSION of de-handing Thor, to try and get the drop on them.

Loki really had a chance to shine in this film. Otherwise the movie was overall very forgettable. I really disliked it on the first watch. Admittedly on following viewings I did find more to like, and there are a number of interesting things that could be built upon in the future but it is still a bottom tier film of the MCU. In the end this is in the bottom five of all MCU products so far (including TV series). Don't ask me what my other four are as that could be spoilers. 😄

Odin is different mainly because of the loss of his wife. Anger took over, and he made him bitter. The story isnt very good yes , but the main thing is that because of conversion , the aether could "call" jane so he could have a body to occupie . but in general it is a very "not to much sense" story. The elves needed the universe in dark. why? the can live as it seems , in alight universe also! it is what it is . The Loki Thor relationship is gold and it saves the movie from being bad. 💚

Fun fact- the kiss at the end wasn’t between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, but it was between him and his wife! I’m not sure exactly what happened there, but I think Natalie couldn’t come in for that shot so they substituted her with Chris’s wife. And yeah, this is one of my least favorite marvel movies. It has its funny and good moments, but Malekieth is a very underwhelming villain imo and some parts drag on a bit. But the parts with Loki and Darcy and Selvig are great!

It's awkward, and clunky, and at times the heavy hand of the writers is evident to the point of distraction. But... Loki is fun to watch in this. Well... he's always fun to watch. So.. The one thing that doesn't make sense about Erik and his mental disparity, he wasn't the only one under Loki's control in Avengers. Hawkeye/Clint was as well if you remember. And you could say well "Hawkeye is an Avenger, he's more mentally tough than Erik" but Erik is a super smart guy, and probably actually really mentally sound. And like Clint as far as is seen, didn't have really any negative affects from being under Loki's control. So just a little off.

I agree that Odin's character in this one was under-written and under-...shown? He was only shown when he was the key to somebody else's scene, when really the he's in control of everything and has all the answers. Basically the whole movie's writing was holding on by its fingernails, and Anthony Hopkins' potential was one of the casualties. I agree that this movie is a bit scatterbrained, yet I never hated it. Superfans are rabid and when something doesn't match Iron Man, they flip out. I'm not offended that Dark World is like an average movie. Sorry for your hard month, keep enjoying reacting as we we enjoy you! 💚

I have long accepted that I'm in the minority of people that enjoy this movie. It's not perfect and there are things I won't defend (such as the complete waste of Chris Eccelston as Malekith). However I love the visuals, I liked exploring Asgard and the other realms with Jane, I love Darcy, and I found the final fight to be a lot of fun with them teleporting around.

Yeah, definitely a low point in the MCU for a lot of people. The MCU wasn't exactly known for having too many standout villains, but even then, Malekith is so dull. I watched a series called The Leftovers last year (incredible, by the way), and it became very clear just how wasted Christopher Eccleston was in this movie. Also crazy to think about is that Mads Mikkelsen and Benedict Cumberbatch were also possibilities for the role. Fantastic actors being courted for a role that I honestly think would make the same impact if they just got a tall stuntman to play it.

Certainly not one of the better MCU movies. Too many writers, too many changes of director, and too much messing around in post-production all helped to create a bit of a dud. Not a terrible movie, but by the standards Marvel had previously set definitely a bit of a letdown.

💚 The only thing I really have to add concerns Odin. I think the difference between his portrayal in this movie and his portrayal in the previous one was that he was turned into a jerk for no obvious reason. Before, he was stern, even harsh, but you could still follow his logic even if you didn't agree. This time he's just being an ass for its own sake, like effectively calling Jane a goat. I feel like the previous movie's Odin would at least have asked why Thor thought to bring her to Asgard instead of an Earth doctor, but here he just had his guards kick her to the curb. As for the rest of the film--yeah. Just--yeah. I feel like the convergence as a whole should have been tossed out, so the other elements could be given more attention. But they weren't, so this is what we got.
