"Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. @nickblomgren4 жыл бұрын
Robersora I think I have an answer to this weirdly enough. My understanding is the AI that was used in the game, from my research, for non-cinematic sequences. Dialog with NPCs, in-game dialog, and quick story sequences that don’t require a “budget”. The rest of the actual cutscenes (most story sequences) seem to use a combination of auto-lip syncing, but also performance capture and manual tweaking in the animation. And those sequences only seemed to have been properly synched to English and Japanese. It’s a similar situation to the localization of Judgement, one second characters are speaking fluent English with their lip-flaps in-synch, the next moment we’re in dub-city with a face that was clearly performance captured. I imagine a similar situation happened during development of FFVIIR to where you’ll have flavor sequences with characters that seem to be talking in fluent German, then bam, we’re back to dub-city. It’s a difficult predicament, auto-lip synching while good still needs manual adjustments. Timing is also another issue. Judgement for example had extra time and effort made to actually synch the timing of the dialog in English, outside the timing delivery in a line was originally given in Japanese. Sadly it seems watching FFVIIR in different languages online, the mouths may be synched correctly in English, but the delivery still feels trapped behind the timing of the original language. We’re getting close to a universal answer to all this nonsense, but sadly even with advanced AI capturing actors performances, were still dealing with how much of a development budget we need to use for said language.

Yet, what the hardcore fans tell you, aside from the main plot (that probably makes no damn sense to you) are the tiny details. I heard Mainly about details that i, subsequently, forgot. Until I’ve played FFVIIR and OH BOY, was I over the moon. I remembered some! It was so weird since they’re not even my memories.. Even though I can’t claim to be extremely nostalgic, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the sense this brought into the franchise (or at least ffvii universe). "When writer and game designer Yuji Horii discovered Wizardry at the 1983 Apple Fest in San Francisco, the new title ignited his imagination and immediately influenced his future games. He first incorporated elements from Wizardry into the Nintendo Famicom version of Enix’s adventure game The Serial Murders at Port Pier (1985). As Koichi Nakamura reprogrammed the game, Horii added monster encounters and borrowed the Wizardry phrase “Monster surprised you!” Horii wanted to make a true Wizardry-like RPG for the Famicom, but he also worried that the millions of Japanese home console owners would find RPGs too complicated. Horii therefore made his Dragon Quest (1986) as straightforward an RPG as he could. Instead of giving players several character choices, Horii focused the game on developing one character in-depth from a fighter to a knight. The one character needs to recover a sacred artifact stolen by the evil Dragonlord. Along the way, the player’s character gains strength and experience by fighting back monsters and rescuing a princess. The combination of Dragon Quest’s gameplay, manga artist Akira Toriyama’s illustrations, composer Koichi Sugiyama’s original score, and Horii’s Shohen Jump magazine articles introducing Japanese players to RPGs, helped sell more than 2 million copies of the game and created a Japanese cultural phenomenon." IMO according to the definition of a video game remake and of what they have been in the past and the present, FF7R is not a remake but more of a sequel/reimagine of the OG, changing themes and core elements while adding stuff that was never part of the plot like multiple timelines and reviving dead characters. RE remakes on the other hand are proper remakes.
@MrNobody477102 жыл бұрын
Handling the FFVIIR in that way was likely the only way in which the plot elements of the expanded FFVII lore could be included, in some fashion. Instead of creating a full RPG sequel, in the form of an FFVII-2, everything was handled with spin-off sequels and prequels that each only covered a chunk of the world or plot, as opposed to what a hypothetical full RPG sequel could have covered. The main issue there is that the spin-offs, on the whole, covered far too many plot elements, and left nothing for a full RPG sequel to cover. Reimagining the OG FFVII in an expansive remake is a great way to get around this, since the expansive plot elements of sequels and prequels can be added in.
@max13112 жыл бұрын
@@MrNobody47710 I think Ff7R integrade showed they could have left the main story intact while adding those expanded universe ideas in DLC as things that happend in the background of the original and we just never got to see them. As of now the only goal they seem to have is to have Zack alive and give him a more important role in the story, that may be linked with maybe Aerith also surviving in some way, fanfiction level stuff, but then again, they are the creators.
@MrNobody477102 жыл бұрын
@@max1311 It seems like SE is basically using FFVIIR as a substitute for the full RPG sequel that they never created (i.e., the hypothetical "FFVII-2"), by incorporating plot elements that could have been used in an FFVII-2. SE probably cannot create a full RPG sequel without rendering the rest of the "Compilation" non-canon, since the games/movies/OVAs leave very little story for a full RPG sequel to cover. "Advent Children" covered Sephiroth returning, and "Dirge of Cerberus" covered Hojo/Shinra, while "Before Crisis" and "Crisis Core" expanded on the backstory. All of that could have been in a full RPG FFVII-2, but it was spread out in smaller spin-offs. FFVIIR is kind of a weird approach to create the sequel that SE was not able to originally create.

the title of the game is VERY misleading. it isnt "A REMAKE" or 'THE REMAKE". I enjoy the Resident Evil 3 remake but it can be a whole lot better. I remember hearing a rumor back during the early days of the Resident Evil 2 remake development that they were going to develop the story of Resident Evil 3 as DLC for that game. That had me worried because Resident Evil 3 is my favorite game in the series and I thought it deserved it's own time in the spotlight. But after playing it I do have to say that it feels like DLC for Resident Evil 2. Good DLC but DLC nonetheless. The major problems with the Resident Evil 3 remake are pacing and structure. The first hour of the original Resident Evil 3 is covered in the first 5 minutes of the remake. And the exploration the series is known for at least in its early days is severely cut down. The original Resident Evil 3 took the structure of the first two games and broke it down into bite-size chunks. Instead of one or two large areas to explore you had a bunch of slightly smaller interconnected areas to explore. You travel to each area of the game which are apart of a large environment. When it's time to go to the Hospital from The Clock Tower you go to the hospital from The Clock Tower. In the Resident Evil 3 remake when it's time to go to the hospital a cutscene will just put you at the hospital. And that's not even mentioning the areas that were cut. I do enjoy the Resident Evil 3 remake but it's clear to me that the people who made the Resident Evil 2 remake really love and admire the original Resident Evil 2 and the people who made the Resident Evil 3 remake do not. Rest in peace Paul Haddad.

FF7 still exists and you can still play it. If you play the fan translation it's still really good. FF7R can exist too, i don't see a problem with that. I hold no nostalgia for FF7 and RE3, so it was funny to read "games that aged poorly". Recently played both of the originals and i'm playing through FF7RE (finished RE3 remake already), and honestly?... while technically inferior, the originals are a lot better, story and pacing wise. I guess i'll never understand why companies keep on remaking games while making huge changes to them that diminish what made them great in the first place (yeah, it's because of money obviously).
@jacobtaylor75064 жыл бұрын
I think FF7 remake fleshes out the characters more. The part when Cloud, Jessi, Biggs and Wedge parachuting, was excellent. Aerith climbing that ladder and it breaks on her, saying shit, chuckled. Then the banter between Cloud and Barret, you can see over time they become more friendly. Reminds me and a buddy, we worked together and over time started to banter back and forth.
@nybxcrotona4 жыл бұрын
So, I actually got both original and remake for FF7 explicitly just to compare how they are. They went for a much slower pace with FF7 Remake, compared to the original. It helps flesh out the world and side characters, as Jessie, Biggs and Wedge didn't get much to do in the original. The battle system for original 7 may be too slow for people, so I do appreciate the efforts to blend the old style and new style of combat. Honestly, the hype for a FF7 remake has been around far longer than any other game that has been remade, imo. So maybe it's just bias when I say the product is a worthy remake.

Calling OG FFVII's combat slow strikes me as really strange. FFVII has one of the fastest command based combat systems in the series, and indeed in the genre generally. Go to the menu, set the battle speed to max, and full active, and the average charge time of the ATB is roughly 2.5 seconds, meaning when your have 3 characters, you'll literally always have a menu open. Battle transitions are swift, and loading times the shortest of the psx FF games. I can understand simply not liking command based combat, but the idea that FFVII plays slow is such a weird sentiment. Like, what games are you even comparing it to? The greater irony here is that since the ATB/commands are also in the remake, and filling the ATB is pretty much required to take down enemies and is done by spamming regular attacks, most encounters in the remake take longer than their original counterparts. Again, if you prefer it simply because it requires more input or feels more visceral that's fine? But slow? Nah.

I feel that the whole 'game aged poorly' is little more than marketing hyperbole. One peddled by publishers, media covering it and, more perplexing, a majority of the folk who consume it. My perspective is, if a dude today can't get on with a game from before, make a them a new game that caters to their modern needs and let them have a similar formative experience as us dudes who had that original game. Why so many want the past recreated? We all lose our shit when our fave movies get cynically remade. Not games, How weird that of all entertainment mediums, none despise its history more than video games.
@MrOrdinaryundone4 жыл бұрын
99% of the time when you hear "Aged poorly" in regards to video games it's code for "I don't fuck with old graphics". That's it. They try and dress it up and coach it in academic think piece verbage but that's just to cover how shallow so many people are. You have people who won't watch old movies because black and white, won't watch foreign movies because subtitles, won't even read books full stop, so when you have an entire generation of people whose video game tastes only started developing post-PS1 it's no surprise that they won't have the tolerance for low fidelity anything because they have never had to in the first place. Games like FF7, RE3, and others haven't aged poorly at all; anyone whose actually played the games can tell you that. That whole term only applies to things like human beings and houses and shit that will actually begin to decay and fall apart as it gets older if not properly maintained. A piece of software can't age, it's exactly what it was the day it was made. All that has changed is people's assumptions about what a video game "should be".
@jokerzwild004 жыл бұрын
I can relate though. I can't play Atari 2600 games, they look like shit and aren't fun for me 99% of the time. To me they have aged poorly. I can definitely see someone who is 15 or 20 years younger than me being turned off by these older games. The ps1/n64 era in particular is very hard to get into if you weren't around when it was new shit.n IMO first gen 3d console games are harder to enjoy than SNES/GEN era 2d stuff, because 2d was at it's pinnacle at that time. Meanwhile they were still figuring out how to make different genres work in 3d, and it shows, especially in the controls and camera. They are a lot less forgiving and user friendly compared to modern stuff. It doesn't help that most of the graphics are... not as good as I remember them. A lot of imagination is needed to fill in the blanks where the visuals are concerned, whereas with today's games you don't need to do that. I think it is completely possible for games to age poorly, but it's more a matter of perspective.
@TheBeird4 жыл бұрын
@@jokerzwild00 That's certainly interesting. I've always wondered if Atari era stuff can be classified as games, cause I saw them more as toys. Perspective as you say. Still, my point remains; wouldn't all this effort be better served going into a Final Fantasy 16? Who's to say that couldn't be this generation's FF7? What they've done now, from what I gleam from the video, is done a Star Trek 09 to their biggest game. No scrap that, it's more like Terminator Genysis. Something familiar cynically changed to try and keep it going indefinitely and milk it to the point where the original work is undermined. I am a person of a pathological principle - "good things are what they are, respect them". Original REmake by Mikami IS how good remakes are made - you take the game, you recreate it exactly as it was from ground-up AND THEN you add upon it. New enemies, new puzzles, new items, new weapons, new mechanics (like the defensive items), more rooms, more shortcuts, more bosses. Good remakes are exactly that - same games, but better. *THESE* remakes are not that. They are the essence of a word *"reimagining"* , as in games that take the original game as a basis for events, basic gameplay elements and music AND THEN they reimagine it as something completely different. In this particular case: "What if RE 3 wasn't a fixed-camera tank controlled survival horror, but a third-person shooter with survival horror elements ?" and "What if FFVII wasn't a turn-based japanese role-playing game, but a action game with role-playing elements." The main problem is that these reimaginings are incapable of doing that which only a true remake can do - completely replace the original due to the sheer quality upgrade. Noone is going to play the original Yakuza anymore if they have Yakuza Kiwami. Noone. It is just not worth it. Same goes for Ni No Kuni, MediEvil, Shadow of the Collosus or Oddworld. These games got their justice, received the essential upgrades that launched them back onto greatness, leaving the originals forever behind. You can't do the same if the game you are supposedly remaking is not even the same game.
@DKZK214 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, the appeal of the Remake has increased for me now that they have decided to shift toward its own separate continuity precisely because it is now no longer vying to "replace" the original. I no longer have to worry that this new game will fuck up my favorite aspects of the original, it will be its own thing.

RE2 Remake 2019 already made cuts and changes that were questionable, like the A/B scenarios zapping, but the gameplay was great and it had extra content to unlock. RE3 Remake might as well be a new RE Revelations game. They cut and changed way too much from the original and left it feeling like a hollow cynical product. It feels rushed and made by a team who did not know or care to make a great RE game like RE2 Remake's team. You're better off buying FF7 Remake due to amount of single player focused content alone. RE3 Remake has extremely poor replay value given that they cut the branching paths, built in RNG system for items/enemies, entire areas from the original, and the Mercenaries bonus mode. Capcom is back to its old greedy and lazy habits.

Then you go back to the world and it's similar to the more polygons Jessie for Cloud (not the ultra detailed), and then a CG cutscene happens and it's the old chibi cloud. I'll use the mods if I get the urge to do it and there's still no word of a upgrade for this old game though. I just finished a FF12 TZA session with a difficulty mod, that game always pull me back in. I'd take a FF7 that looked as good as that.

FF7 Remake shows what remasters/remakes should be: improved and expanded. Expanding locations, gameplay, characters and lore while keeping it dense.
@marcosdheleno4 жыл бұрын
there is a diference between a remaster and a remake, a remaster is taking something and making it the best it could be with today's knowledge. a remake is taking it, and rebuilding it to fit in today's gaming design.

RE1 Remake 2002 is the best one because the original creator and team worked on it and made the game better than RE1 1996 in every way. RE2 Remake was good, but they already started getting lazy and cutting/changing stuff from the 1998 RE2. RE3 Remake feels like a complete reboot or even new game. Wasn't even made by the same team who did RE2 Remake and the dip in quality speaks for itself. Who knows what their gonna do to RE4 now...

Nah, there will still be original shit, too. Remakes are just the hot thing everyone is talking about, but no matter how many are are made there will always be other options. It's kinda similar to music in how if you enjoy hard rock/metal and go find a video here on KZbin and most likely someone has left a comment lamenting how good music no longer exists. Good music in said genre is still being made, it just isn't nearly as popular and will require looking just under the surface. But yeah, regardless people are gonna get sick of constant announcements of new remakes in the works. Imagine if next year we find out Red Dead 2 or other huge recent games are getting that treatment. 😂

Its weird that everyone wanted a remake of RE2. I can think of Capcom games that have aged way worse than the original RE2. Like, has anyone PLAYED Mega Man Legends recently? If you want to play it with controls that don't totally suck, you have to settle for the N64 version, and miss out on the plot entirely.

@Corvo@AZ Agreed. I'm surprised Thor liked the aesthetic. So much of FF7R's added material does not fit the look of 7 whatsoever IMO. Same with the dreary-tech music. The whole 90's anime sci-fi look is bland-ified.

I personally think the remake of ff7 is way too long for its own good and the combat system has the exact same flaw the original did (namely making thr gameplay worse so it looks great) but instead of just making it slow the whole system is now almost broken because of the horrible camera and the not well thought out abilities. Also whats with the constant slowing down of cloud to a crawl... anyway great video as allways
@peachesandcream87534 жыл бұрын
I had gripes with the battle system too because I swear I'm spending more time in battle than I was in the original. I also hate how you can't escape fights. They also took away all control from you, like being able to sneak into the Shinra building or go in head first through the front door and instead made you fight loads of enemies through the back door, which for some reason doesn't alert any of the security throughout the building, all because they wanted to pad out this sequence. It also doesn't give you the option to sneak past enemies, like when you're crossing a pipe over two sleeping enemies, and then the game puts you into the fight regardless because they make the pipe fall. Why give us the illusion of option and then take it away? I don't play RPG's for fighting, I play them for story which I'm not getting because I'm fighting 3/4 of the time. Don't even get me started on the Arbiters of Fate or that stupid Train Graveyard scene.
@charlestonobryant8074 жыл бұрын
Bumble Grumble you do get a choice once you get into the Shinra building. You can either take the long way up the stairs or the elevator, you just start off in a fight. And the game gives a reason why the rest of security is not alerted and it’s thanks to the Mayor
@peachesandcream87534 жыл бұрын
@@charlestonobryant807 Yeah, you only get the choice once you've fought your way through. That's not the same. And the mayor wouldn't be able to intervene radio calls between security so it still doesn't make sense.

I felt like 95% of the citizens looking like they were wearing clothes from Newsies or Target. It was so weird seeing only the quest characters in any kind of real fashion I would expect from a Final Fantasy Universe. Half the citizens could've been models from Just cause or Tomb raider, they just felt weird in a somewhat "Fantasy" setting. The Shinra building as well with all the office chairs, looking like Office Depot or Walmart versions I could buy now, as well as sharpie markers, white boards and tons of other examples. Barret is just Mr. T with a soft heart now. I get that ppl love him but its just so over the top most of the time, like Roche and Johnny. They could've made him more realistic but he's more cartoonish than in the original. The new music is great, but where the OG made music for each specific zone and had a tone and feeling, now it just seems like they're all just punched up versions which are snappier or completely weird for some of the Jazz replacements. The song isnt great for the area, it's great because its a good riff on the previous version. I dont like open-world games and the quest-like nature of the game really threw me off. Also I dont like that Sepiroth is an all powerful god-like character now who can summon dimensions. Why does he even need Meteor now, when he can just do it himself it seems.

Y’know. I really want to buy this game and like it...but I just can’t. I wish they had made FFXVI instead of it. FFVII looks like a good remake, but it’s just that, good. When I play the original FFVII, I don’t have a moment where I say “I think that’s good” I have a whole lot of moments that make me say “holy shit.” The best parts of FFVII weren’t in Midgar, Midgar was just meant to put the characters together and get them into the main dish. Here, they expanded it into a whole game, and they announced it like 5 years ago. I resent it because after 5 years, they could’ve made a new FF game to try to craft a new legacy for a series that people have viewed as going downhill. When people say “I love Final Fantasy” and you say “what’s your favorite one?” No one is going to say FFXIII’s trilogy or XV. Some might say XIV if they got sucked into the mmo world, but most people probably said “eh” since it was an MMO. XII is never remembered for its story, it’s remembered because you could program how the game played itself with the gambit system. XI is a defunct online game. The last time that they made a great Final Fantasy game for the mainstream was X and X-2. Why doesn’t square see fit to get a new generation to love the series? As a 20 year old, all the FF games that I get told to play are either almost as old as me or older. I’d just like 1 chance to get a piece of the pie that everyone loves. Playing the original FFVII gave me that, but it made me say “what if they made something like this again.” And instead of making something like it, that called upon its best aspects...the handed it back to me and said “we want you to give us $180 this time,” because you know it’s going to be at least 3 parts. It’s shameless, and no matter how much heart and soul goes into it, it’ll never be anything more than an attempt to rewrite the history of a beloved icon in the industry. I trust that it’s a good game, I’ll probably pick it up on a sale sometime, since I kinda love Nomura’s storytelling style for being a beautiful mess. I just know that the effort that went into making this game could’ve been so much more and carved out a new legacy for a stagnate franchise. It’s existence angers me because they’re going to put the effort to make 2 more of these and that means it might be 10 more years until we get Final Fantasy XVI
@calebmarshall57394 жыл бұрын
First I want to address that a lot of the bullshit to do with the series comes from what the fanbase wants and doesn't like Final fantasy 12 was probably at least in my opinion the best game on the PS2 while most people consider it as shit without understanding anything about it. Another thing is ff11 is still going strong on pc and most people still consider 11 to be one of the best in the series. Not to mention 14 which is pure final fantasy bliss. But then again most people don't play MMOs so I'll let that slide. Now for the real point saying that none of the best parts of final fantasy 7 is in midgar is all well and good and I kind of agree with it to an extent but saying the remakes isn't good enough because its only midgar is like saying okay scrap the whole beginning of the story and just starting halfway because its "better here" Plus the team working on ff7r isnt the only team at square and there's many teams working on different games one of which could be ff16. Just because ff7r2 is in development doesnt mean nothing else can be

during the boss with the fate boys, each character gets a glimpse into their futures (i guess?) and cloud saw aerith's death a lot. i'm also unsure of what they're doing by showing what would have happened if zack had survived. it feels like they're trying to set up aerith and zack's deaths being undone but i kinda feel like that shouldn't happen! not from a fan purist standpoint, but because those characters' deaths have such ripple effects on the story, aerith's especially. when a character has a goal they're striving for, ending their lives before they reach those goals makes it more impactful.

Tbh I thought they were going to tone down the ''class division'' aspect of Midgar because of the whole NO POLITIK IN ME VIDEOGAME!1 thing going on right now on the internet but I'm really glad they didn't. Now it's even clearer and more realistic.

Holy shit man great video. You basically summed up all my thoughts in FFVIIR while also making some other points that I hadn’t even considered. For example, I was kind of against how much Sephiroth was in the game prior to the Shinra building but your point that everything was much more fleshed out in this version so the build-up to him wouldn’t have worked made a lot of sense and made me reconsider his implementation. As for the ending, I’m still kind of in the middle on it and it really depends on where they go with it from here. Still, I applaud the balls on Square for taking some risks with this game even if it might piss off a lot of fans. If they can maintain the level of quality and detail this game has than I am totally here for future installments even if it does turn into Nomura bullshit.
