You can have your own mixer routine to both work around insanely wonky sample playback and add more channels. You do have the CPU horsepower to accomplish quite a bit there, though harnessing it requires some contortion due to parts of the memory subsystem being slow.
@Plecofish97 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you bet I'm replying to a year+ old comment. It's mostly just the fact that Mother 3 is a really tightly coded game, which also made the fan translation a massive pain to make because just looking at the code funny could break everything. Back in 2016, I also happened to be so obsessed with Mother 3's music that I dissected the midis to see what was going on. What I found is that there are rarely more than 5 samples playing at any given time. Impressive by GBA, but not quite enough to sound as rich as what you hear. That extra bit of richness comes from the use of the legacy sound channels for reverb. Not all tracks use them, but a lot of them do. Mind of a Thief and Big Shot's Theme are a couple that come to mind. Every beep and boop is carefully chosen to match the sample it's adding reverb to while also being quiet enough to not be obvious. The good ol' GBA crust also helps hide it of course. It's a really clever use of the legacy sound channels that I haven't heard in any other GBA game.

The GBA had an Initial D game and it's a damn turn based racing game. The way the races are framed is just like the anime/manga; zooming on to cars brakes lighting up, cars cornering nearly grazing the walls, and dropping tires in the gutter. The GBA eurobeat is great. It uses both samples and 8bit chiptunes because they need to make room for the car sounds and tire skids. There's a gameplay guide on yt if anyones curious.
