You can have your own mixer routine to both work around insanely wonky sample playback and add more channels. You do have the CPU horsepower to accomplish quite a bit there, though harnessing it requires some contortion due to parts of the memory subsystem being slow.
@Plecofish97
@Plecofish97 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you bet I'm replying to a year+ old comment. It's mostly just the fact that Mother 3 is a really tightly coded game, which also made the fan translation a massive pain to make because just looking at the code funny could break everything. Back in 2016, I also happened to be so obsessed with Mother 3's music that I dissected the midis to see what was going on. What I found is that there are rarely more than 5 samples playing at any given time. Impressive by GBA, but not quite enough to sound as rich as what you hear. That extra bit of richness comes from the use of the legacy sound channels for reverb. Not all tracks use them, but a lot of them do. Mind of a Thief and Big Shot's Theme are a couple that come to mind. Every beep and boop is carefully chosen to match the sample it's adding reverb to while also being quiet enough to not be obvious. The good ol' GBA crust also helps hide it of course. It's a really clever use of the legacy sound channels that I haven't heard in any other GBA game.

The GBA had an Initial D game and it's a damn turn based racing game. The way the races are framed is just like the anime/manga; zooming on to cars brakes lighting up, cars cornering nearly grazing the walls, and dropping tires in the gutter. The GBA eurobeat is great. It uses both samples and 8bit chiptunes because they need to make room for the car sounds and tire skids. There's a gameplay guide on yt if anyones curious.

I don't think I would've ever believed I'd see someone reference the Pirates of of the Caribbean: Deadman's Chest GBA game, but here we are. I still have the cartridge for that game somewhere in my old room at my childhood home. Not sure if it still works, but I know its there. I remember my grade school brain being far too smooth and the game being far to janky for me to ever even get close to beating it. I'm pretty sure I always used to die at the first or second levels they had you controlling a little sprite ship where you had to navigate through this super mazey map filled with enemy pirate ships. I can't remember it too well obviously, but I do know for a fact I thought it was a piece of shit. Thank you Mr. HighHeels for giving me this weird kinda frustrating nostalgia!

I have such good memories of the GBA. It was my first ever console and although I played mostly Gameboy games on it I actually played some of the games on this video. Good times.

Had to consume this one in several sessions as I was utterly overwhelmed by nostalgia! GBA crust-core will be the next wave of "retro". _It must be._

I am obsessed with the Megaman Battle network games. I bought a gameboy micro just to play them all in the tiniest possible way. I wish there were more games like it. Ya I know there's a steam game that just came out but I forget it's name. What I mean is the real world pokemon vibes mixed with the cyberpunk matrix world vibes. So good.

Just so everyone know, the MBN style game on steam is called One Step From Eden, it's pretty good but it does have roguelike element mixed in.

Man I loved those GBC harry potter RPG games, I played them all the time as a little kid with a worm light under the covers at 1 am. I wish I had more GBA games later on, but I never had the money for them. Love all the weird little games people came up with on the console, had a lot of fun with flash carts eventually
