The fact that he is only the 13th player in history to accomplish the feat speaks volumes in itself, but between 1979 and 1996, if you exclude the lockout year, the NHL averaged twelve 100 pt scorers per season, much more than in any other era. Apart from Joe and Gordie Howe, the other 11 guys who've done it, all played several years during the NHL's high offence era. And on top of that, don't forget that Joe missed a full season in his prime... had there been an NHL season in 05-06, he'd probably be chasing 1100 by now.
