I travel from Spain to Morocco without flying, by train & boat - but would I recommend that you use the same route?

After taking the Italy-Tunisia boat earlier this year, I went in for seconds with the Spain-Morocco boat, via Granada, Algeciras and Tangier Med.
I chose to go via this route purely for a nice leisurely view sailing away from the rock of Gibraltar... but would I get it?

2:00 I think it was a necessary repositioning train that was carried out to enable a much busier return and any revenue on that train is a bonus with any loses off set by a busier return leg .

Great video Tom, the port you got off at (Tangier Med) is meant mostly for folks with cars/motorcycles/trucks going to other places in Morocco who don't want to get stuck in Tangier's traffic before getting on the highway. If you're a foot passenger it makes a million sense to get on the ferry from Tarifa which drops you off right in the heart of Tangier, Algeciras-Tarifa is also half the distance between Tangier's two ports. The third option that you didn't include is the ferry from Algeciras to Spain's exclave of Ceuta, this is the cheapest of all three crossings (Tarifa-Tangier being the priciest) but you then have to take a bus/taxi to the land crossing into Morocco and another taxi ride to the nearest major town. There are up to 5 other routes as you go east along the coast between Morocco/Spanish exclaves and mainland Spain bringing the total up to 8 different routes without counting the longer journeys from Barcelona/France/Italy, there's definitely no shortage of sea travel options between the two countries.

Exactly! There are also ferries from Almería and Malaga for instance. The ferry from Tarifa to Tangier is 70€ return, which I find acceptable. I went on a 1-day guided tour from Tarifa to Tangier, including ferry, lunch and bus ride, which was only 79€. On the ferry you could have joined the queue just 20 min before arrival. It would have been quite short then. That's what I did.

@@HolgerJakobs Not sure when you went on your guided tour but the fares have gone up quite a bit, from Tarifa it's currently at 42EUR one way. Guided tours for daytrippers are discounted given travel agents negotiate special rates with ferry companies.

I travelled from Tarifa, Spain to Tangier, Morocco in 2007. I was staying in Nerja at the time so had to take a coach to Tarifa. The trip to Morocco was amazing. It was my first time in Africa. Even though it was only a day trip, its one I'll never forget.

we took the same ferry from Morocco and the process was much smoother. I agree that the trip from Tangier to the ferry port is beautiful and should itself be considered an integral part of the journey.

Hello! I also traveled from Barcelona to Tangier overland a few months ago (via cordoba instead of Granada). However, I decided to go from tarifa and add a visit to Gibraltar. I must say immigration was just as painful and nobody even gave me an immigration card! That being said Tangier is an amazing city and I hope you enjoy it. Gibraltar is definitely worth visiting in the future too.

Did you have time to explore Cordoba? I went to the major cities in Andalusia by train - Granada, Seville etc. but there's something about Cordoba which stole my heart.

Yes, Gibraltar is worth a visit. I parked my car right before the border (8€ per day) and continued with my bicycle into Gibraltar. I paid a visit to the town, bought ice cream and some ginger cookies at Marks and Spencer. Later I continued further South until Europa Point, had a coffee there, walked around and continued my bike ride around the peninsula on the Eastern coast. It was a very interesting day in April 2024.

@@witlof5492 yes I did I thought it was incredible! I had been to Granada before too and thought cordoba was even cooler. The mosque was breathtaking and the city felt very well preserved from its Islamic era!

Take that ferry to Ceuta. That's cool place. Mixed culture with Spain and Morocco, weird religions, EU-Morocco borderline etc. And not touristy like Gibraltar definitely is...

Some feedback of you’re open to it - I don’t necessarily mind the hard-coded subs at the start of the video, but maybe next time make them a bit smaller? I watch KZbin on my big TV and the font was huge!
@LouieAblett

Ah now that’s the thing, on my average sized iPhone screen in vertical it was only slightly too big, which is quite common in KZbin for retention, and I would imagine people with worse vision could still struggle to read it
