Join us for an overview for the history of Thorpe Park!
Back in 1979 Thorpe Park opened to the public, and has come a long way since that day. In this video we will outline some of the key rides and attractions which have come and gone over the past 45 years of being open. Right the way up to the 45th anniversary of the park, and the opening of the UK's tallest coaster, Hyperia.
All the media we use in this video is mainly ours, with the exceptions of official publications/adverts/brochures/maps. No images have been used from other sources which does mean, some key attractions early on we weren't fortunately enough to ride and document.
We have been visiting the park since the 80's, and have attended every Fright Nights as well! We will also bring the history of Fright Nights (or Nites as it was from 2002-2004) in each year. From the groundbreaking Colossus, to the even more groundbreaking Hyperia a huge set of rides have graced the park.
The park have come along way in 45 years, and now sits as one of, if not the UK's number one theme parks. What are you memories of Thorpe Park in the last 45 years? When was your first visit to the park? Which ride do you miss the most?

I remember how it was in the beginning . Me, cousins and Uncle and Aunt went . He never got to go again and see what it became as he died of cancer in 1982. I haven't seen images of it for Years. Thank You .

Anyone else remember little boats (maybe the ones approx 3 mins into the video) but I remember them being in the lake itself and there was a big green octopus, you’d inevitably get your boat stuck on a tentacle for half your time 😅 I’m certain it was Thorpe Park, as remember the dome. I’m a 1977 baby and I recall being quite young.

Fantastic video. Really appreciate the effort this must have taken to produce, so thank you loads. I think you may also have helped me identify my first ever roller coaster too….Space Station Zero! I had no idea that became the Flying Fish 😮

Great video, we always used to finish on the giant helter helter in front of Space Station Zero. Do you remember the Bronco Bikes? They had a steering wheel instead of handle bars and bounced, used to smack your knees on the wheel if you weren't careful, god that hurt! 😆

Congratulations on this Adam, with only a couple of visits in the early years to much more regular visitors since following your videos here and at Chessington, didnt know the railway was only lost fairly recently - Are we going to get a through the years of Chessington next that would be good. This helped us understand a lot more about the journey Thorpe Park has been on. P.s RMC is nothing to do with RMC for coasters is it, just a coinicidence??!!

i went quite a few times in my youth. i recall an indoor space themed roller coaster and phantom fantasia. also cinema 180 great. typing this before watching the video, having visited last week i can't place which part contained the farm etc - is it now built on or just fenced off?

The farm is right up the top end of the lake, not accessible anymore (or really visible) from the main park. If you were to drive into Thorpe, you can still see the area
