I think the best way I got recommended a game without spoilers was DDLC actually, through Game Theory's first video on it. I can't remember exactly how they did it, but it was along the lines "this game is really good, there is so much to talk about it, but it is better experienced blind". And I decided to go play that game and take it seriously. I don't think I would have gotten into it without that, nor would I had experienced it this way. Those hidden gems that you can't recommend, I think you should just say "there is more to it than what meets the eyes". And if you get recommended such a thing, take the game seriously. The issue is... that sounds like a cheatcode to recommend dogshit games too. It is a bit of the game's job to hint at its deepness or the fact that there is gonna be a big turnabout at some point. DDLC did this with their content warning anouncement. Until you are met with such content, you know you are not seeing the whole picture. ISAT did it with its intro scene. Until you know what that scene represents, you know there is something pivotal you have not understood yet. Those things do not spoil anything of the game. It is just a thought that lingers in your mind "...wait why was there this in the beginning then". Again, that could be a cheatcode for dogshit games. A weird thingy in the beginning that is never explained leads you to get engaged for nothing? Very bad. But the combo of the two - a weird hint that takes ages to make sense, and a friend that tells you this game is a gem - looks very promising to me. ;)

I think it's a very good take, yeah ! Wild comparison, but I know FNAF started a whole hype about "hidden lore" and helped make wayy stronger the culture of internet theories. It's reached a point where you really, REALLY need to have some impeccable fucking execution to pull out those things ; I don't ever want to relive the absolute mess that was the FNAF4 box witchhunt. Yet at the same time ... Personally speaking, I know I can be a little apprehensive towards games of genres I'm not really fond of. That's why them mere fact that DDLC was even suggested to me by a friend was that "weird hint", in itself, for me.
