I’m a old guy and would never spend that money for big wheels and tires on my F150, but man they look so good on a truck and them young folks look like their having a great time with those big tire trucks so I give them a 👍, drugs drinking women or modifying your truck, probably the cheapest addiction.

Many owners of 4X4 trucks put larger tires on their trucks as their first modification. It looks cool, but accomplishes little, other than excessive wear, as you stated. My feeling is that auto makers spend millions of dollars designing these trucks for their specific intended use, and after market parts producers do not. I have a 2019 Power Wagon, and literally everyone thinks the stock tires are too small, and they change them immediately. I can honestly say, living in Montana, I have rarely met an off road obstacle that I couldn’t conquer with the stock set up.The few times I have do not justify the expense of larger tires, suspension upgrades, and the increased cost of maintenance.

More likely it is the negative wheel offset putting the additional load on the bearing not the oversized tires on its own.

I’ve changed wheel bearings on trucks with stock wheels & tires. That being said, the trucks running excessive offsets are way more prone to failure. I’ve seen a few trucks where the wheels have actually fallen off.

Just replace stock tire size with more aggressive off road tires of the same size. Use stock wheel size.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. I got it brand new, and after two years of owning it, I lifted it 3" with 31's tires and 17" with -12 offset wheels. As of now, the truck has 202000 miles in it so far I have no issues it is still factory-installed wheel bearing.

Depends on how you use your truck, I got my truck stuck twice and bent a front facade bracket on my trail boss. I leveled it put on 35s and it drives soooo much better. Same spots where I had issues are not even of concern. So yes if you are doing it for looks know it may cost you some suspension if you are off road a lot just suck it up and upgrade because it will actually save you money in the long run.

That is why buying a factory built 4x4, with 35’s or larger is the best deal. If you are going to mod with bigger tires, you must do your homework in regard to components and such.

When I bought new tires for my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, I decided to buy a 1” taller tire. I kept the 16” wheel size instead of opting for a 17” wheel. I wanted more side wall to soak up more impact because during the summer months I often take my truck on service or forest roads. I wanted the extra 1” of ground clearance because we live on a private road and we get 5-7 feet of snow per winter and we have to plow and maintain our road ourselves. The width of my new tires are the same as factory. I chose Falken Wildpeak AT4W 265/75/16. Yes I took a hit on fuel economy but I needed a stronger tire as we use my truck for work around our mountain property. The AT4Ws are designed for full sized pickups, but I put them on my Tacoma.

Cars too. This would explain why I got wheel bearing issues after buying bigger tirerack rims with lower profile tires. I though it was just a pothole. The low profiles also reduced the cushioning.

Is switching from factory-installed highway tires to say, heavier All-Terrain or Rugged- Terrain tires (same size) gonna affect the wheel bearings? Thanks in advance.

Wait, you mean installing larger tires , wheels , suspension lifts will cost you more money and cause pre mature failure?? Obviously this is true. What’s not obvious to the average consumer is that aftermarket parts that you sell will fail even faster. So stick to genuine and watch how long they last.

It’s pretty simple math. If the stock tires are 30” diameter, and you change them to 35” diameter, you will raise everything in the vehicle by 1/2 the increased diameter, or 2 1/2”. The most significant points are the differentials, since they usually hang down the lowest on solid axle vehicles like Jeeps. Lifting the body does almost nothing in comparison.

You know what is the problem with custom modification in general? Consider this; -car manufacturing companies spend millions (at least) designing a car -an individual will spend X amount of dollars on one aspect of the vehicle Does it make sense? Not yet? -car manufacturing company do an RnD on a car which takes years before it gets to blueprint. Some cars have been around for more than a decade and is literally an evolution from the first gen. Toyota does this a lot thus making their products “bullet proof”. -an individual who wants to modify his/her car spends x amount of time choosing what wheels to install In conclusion: Stock set up is balanced build. Every part serves a purpose. Personal modification, often times, only considers a portion not the entirety. But even though this is the hard reality, there will always be THAT person who thinks he/she knows better.

I do lots of off-roading in the Arizona desert. Both my truck and jeep have 2” lift kits but run stock or slightly larger than stock tire size. My suspension components last way longer than trucks with 35s or better, and I go 99% of the places they go.

Depends what you switch to and what the vehicle is. My 23 tacoma had 245/75r16 tires. Upgraded to 255/85r16 for more ground clearance. If I switched to 35s then it would start becoming an issue requiring a lift, control arm upgrade, and shims to correct the the drive shaft and cv angles. 33s don't change the performance much but 35s will. If the wheel bearing goes bad oh well, i'll buy a new one. The extra ground clearance is worth it offroad. C rated 6 ply tires weigh a lot more but it can actually stand up to the offroad conditions. Its all tradeoffs.

When big truck owners are trying so hard to be cool, it's hard to hear a bad wheel bearing over the loud custom exhaust. And if you actually need oversized tires, maybe you bought the wrong vehicle. Yes, vanity is a cruel mistress.

If I need larger tires I bought the wrong truck. Yeah it’s fun, looks better and performs better off road in the short term, but unless you upgrade your entire suspension, breaks, drivetrain your shortening their lifespan, durability and reliability.

Vanity VS Function. U learn this as you get older but u cant tell younger guys this, and I didnt listen at that age either. The more u mod your truck the sh*ttier it becomes. The older I get, the more I get into maintaining and taking care of my truck instead of destroying it LOL.
@TonicofSonic
@TonicofSonic Ай бұрын
To be fair, these modded trucks are mostly maintained by the owners so these expenses are not a problem, just an afternoon a few beers and some fun with your wrenches. Meanwhile the people who *think* they are smart are sitting in a waiting room at a dealership to pay out thousands for the same repair that a truck owner gets done for hundreds. Remember their little car is also a literal piece of junk compared to a capable truck.

Big wheels and tires = more unsprung mass, more load on components including brakes, higher rolling resistance, higher fuel consumption, increased aerodynamic drag, inferior on-road handling, slower acceleration and messes up your speedometer readings. All for what? So you can drive over a rock better once every ten years in that wilderness trip you promised you’d do every weekend and look like a gigantic wanker 99% of the remaining time? Pass.
