an abacus actually works pretty well to track LP - but it might get weird with extremely high values if you wanna ensure having attacks by Castle of Dark Illusions being covered in your tracking

Personally I use monsters attack point values to keep track . I get 1 Drytron Meteonis Draconid and 1 Quadrantids then put 1 card upside-down side ways (minus sign) . Then any time I get attacked I represent that much damage after the minus sign by monsters attack points . If it's a direct attack I take the opponents monster and photocopy it to show it attacked me directly.

When I was a kid we figured out that calculators are pretty well suited to keep track of lp but looking at it now you still want some kind of log of what dmg you took but at the time we where just amused with how good calculators worked for it.
