In this video series I am playing various Submissions of the Dungeoncrawler Gamejam 2024. For Definitions about what a Dungeon Crawler and what a Game Jam is, check the pilot episode. All Games have been created within just 9 days during the DungeonCrawler Game Jam hosted by dungeoncrawlers.org / @zooperdan
My Intention is to present the games while also giving genuine, unfiltered feedback to the developers. These are my personal opinions which are neither representing the whole page nor community.

This was done in 9 days!? I like the art style and animation of the enemy sprites. I just downloaded it, looking forward to trying it out.

Yep, all games done within 9 days. However you were allowed to prepare beforehand. Also AI can be of big help these days and wasn't forbidden for the jam. Have fun playing! :)

About the room size - I bet it is not just tile size, more like too wide FOV. More telephoto like lens would have brought the objects closer to viewer. But still, room look a bit flat in height.

Yeah, usually it's a mix. However like in this instance it's a bit hard to talk regarding FOV as it's not a real 3D engine I think. So if you wanted to change anything it would be the way the tile is "made".

@@KordanorsGamingSessions Well 3D or not, FOV is just a camera and perspective drawing concept, you can find field of vision explanations and how to draw things with different FOV in any decent perspective drawing book :) - anyway at 23:04 you can see that camera does a turn, and you see that tables and such are simple camera facing billboards. So at least the tile graphics are mapped to planes aligned in grid so this game isn't fully 2D like Eye of the Beholder or Dungeon Master and such games. And camera does interpolate from grid position to next.

@@322ss What I meant is that in pure 2D you could basically have 2 different FOVs depending on the tile, like where the second tile is longer than the proper FOV would have made it according to the first tile. But you are right, this seems to be a 3D engine.

I think when you are getting a level up you are also automatically back at full health.

You are so cought up in tile size, angle and what not, you should accept some games just want to do their own thing. I don't know if this should be a technical analysis and comparison to more prominent titles in the genre rather than a review of the game, but it definitely feels so. It's a bit annoying that you play, then return to technical comparison, then you play more than you return to the same technical comparison and you do this throughout the whole video.

Thanks, but this is also a mix of everything. I play the game, show it, but also try to analyze it and give feedback to the developers, sometimes also intentionally trying to break things. Lot's of things are purely subjective. Comparisons and the analysis of Perspective and Movement however are not (the objective part is, whether I think they are good or not ofc, but if its different, its different), and oftentimes it's down to these, that very minor changes can have massive impact on the gameplay.

@@KordanorsGamingSessions Yes, I agree with the general motivation your reviews have, hats off for that. Maybe if you'd do a more structured analysis where you touch all the points you want, to give constructive feedback and then move on, you'd avoid returning to a specific issue again and again, like an earbug.

@@vampiressae Usually I try to cover perspective and movement at the earliest point possible and then again at the end, but I got to keep mentioning it in some cases as otherwise it's hard to relate. If you encounter a bug in game, as a spectator you would see it every time. But with cut off movement or something similar, as a spectator you would never experience how annoying it can be, as it doesnt translate to the screen.

@@KordanorsGamingSessions I totally get it, however mentioning the first time it occures and at the end when you do a summary it's plenty... when you mentioned it the third time halting the gameplay and the momentum of all the show, i rolled my eyes and watched something else. This was just my two cents about your videos (gave a try of a few but had the same experience with all). You do you.

How much validity can be given to a creation if AI is used for half it's assets? I think this is becoming a bridge too far..

This jam allows to use premade assets. So you can just use 100% of some asset pack instead. Compared to that, having consistent AI Art is actually more effort.

Not a fan of soulless ai-generated "art and music", so that's a pass from me.

Can understand, but wouldn't call it soulless. In the end, AI is a tool, and the alternative is often to just use the same stock graphics like dozens of other games. Ofc customly crafted graphics are cooler, but in a jam time is precious.
