Persona 5 Tactica is a game that I don't think gets the love that it deserves quite yet even though it has so much to offer narratively. While I think that creating a Tactical RPG as a Persona 5 Spinoff was an interesting choice by Atlus, the results paid off in dividends with P5T! Characters like Erina and Toshiro have quickly become some of my favorites in the franchise, and the Phantom Theives maintain the charm they have always had, even if they don't develop much throughout the game. Whether you have played the game or not I hope you can enjoy the non-spoiler and spoiler sections of this video to get my complete thoughts on the game and how Persona 5 Tactica Justifies its existence.

For me it's Fire Emblem Engage, but this game's easily in my top 3. (Which all happen to be turn-based strategy games, as Re-Boot Camp is also up there)

My only complaint is that I felt Ren needed to be voiced here and Strikers. A silent protagonist doesn't work as well when you're *constantly* in a group. And sometimes it felt like they arbitrarily gave Yusuke new characteristics so he could act as a "substitute Joker" in certain scenes since the actual Joker can't speak. I agree with Makoto too, but honestly...I think they dropped their ball on her being the brains even in the original game, where Futaba and Morgana handled all the battle strategy and Makoto herself crediting the their gambit at the sixth Palace to Futaba.

This might be one of the best summaries of Tactica I've seen, and I agree with most of your points. How I sum up the story is, it's not very relevant to each of the PTs as individuals (except Futaba and sometimes Haru), but it's relevant to the PTs as a group and what they stand for. The reason I can't picture it happening with SEES or the Investigation Team is simple: politics. Via Shido and, well, what they've done in general, the PTs are far more tied to the political world than the other parties are, and they're essentially political activists by this point. And after taking down a... really bad Prime Minister candidate, it feels like a natural extension to build up one of the few non-corrupt politicians out there. (I've said elsewhere that both P5's "sequel" spinoffs deal with the fallout from the fall of Shido's conspiracy, Tactica from the politics side and Tactica for the police) Looking at the Soviet posters and... woah, it actually is pretty similar, too much to be a coincidence. Never considered that Toshiro wouldn't exactly need a PT outfit in his own mind, that makes sense. "Doesn't have the upbeat earworms of Royal and Strikers" HOW DARE YOU TRUTH OR DARE IS PERFECTION. (jokes, but in all seriousness Truth of Dare is my new favourite P5 vocal song) I agree that the 4th Kingdom is a little meh, and there's a ton of exposition dumped at once. The final boss fight isn't great either. But getting to use Toshiro for all those battles slightly made up for it. And it's true that Salmael feels sort of unnecessary after Toshiro's arc is already over. Granted, Salmael is representative of certain political issues in Japan but I wont' say more because I don't live there.

It can be argued that Toshiro not getting an outfit is because his suit, without the gloved hand hiding his past, IS his idealised form of rebellion, hence why he only gets the mask. While the theives get combat oriented fantasy outfits to fight in the metaverse as a form of rebelion, Toshiro's battlefield is the political office, and he's already in the most ideal "suit of armour" for that stage.

A theory some people have floated is that Tactica takes place during February, after Joker's release from Juvie, but before the ending of Persona 5. Perhaps Salmael surfaced in response to the public's worries after Shido's confession. At any rate, I'm kind of annoyed that the final boss was another Demiurge. Couldn't they come up with another God of peace/preservation?

thanks for the video Jon! yeah this game was superb as i was not expecting to enjoy this as much as i did. in fact the story was so good i might just make a fanfic on it. Tactica might have been my game of the year had it not been for star ocean second story r. Happy holidays!

I am super curious about the Communist Propaganda poster reference. It's hard to say whether it is just an apt historical reference to a faction based off of the Russian Revolution, or if it is forshadowing something more sinister about your supposed allies. Of course it's entirely possible that the game developers didn't see this symbolism as sinister at all or even if they did this would hardly be the first time the Phantom Thieves were associated with "Evil" but Satanael from my perspective was obviously Good when compared to Yaldabaouth, whereas I'm not so easily willing to assume that the communist are the "Good" guys. Even this hot pink monstrosity will have it's work cut out to convince me it is more Evil.
