Zombie forming groups can be explained by simply the act of going towards food sources. Each zombie in an area will go to a potential prey, and when it is successfully hunted down, the zombies stay around or just wander off in search of another prey. With enough iterations, this behaviour can lead to a really large group of zombies occupying and wandering the same area, giving the illusion of a organized social-like behaviour.

That mirrors one of my playthroughs in the game Project Zomboid. Cool thing is that it allows you to customize every aspect of the experience, right down to how your zombies behave. In short: Default has zombies rally or form groups. I disabled that in my game and ended up with much larger hordes that just flock somewhere by happenstance but aren't coordinated whatsoever. Ironically swarming a location more efficiently than if they were in a pack.

I think the most horrifying part about this explanation is that even though you stopped thinking and rationalizing you're still there, everything is blurry, the only thing you can smell is meat and blood, all of your body feels numb and you're in constant pain from the rithmic spasms all over your body and your rotting organs. Not to mention that whole bladder ordeal how painfull must that be.

Yeah all the portrayals of someone dies and then the corpse reanimates sort of takes the human element out of it. But this description of it where you’re still in there with no actual control while actively falling apart is truly horrifying. Makes me think of the infected in The Last Of Us. People still in there just trapped by the fungus.

Yeah, we are bound to our bodies, when they reanimate, some part of their conciousness reanimate as well, therefore, they will be semi aware of their surrounding but they feel slow and hungry. Though zombies don't react to pain, they do feel it but not as much as we do since their senses are also reanimated. But overtime, they decay and the sense of pain slowly goes away.

Kind of like how you lose control of your choices when you're addicted to something, when you say you can quit whenever you want you're not lying, you genuinely believe that statement, however your brain subconciously pushes you to continue your addiction without your awareness. In this case I think that would be pushed to an extreme where you just don't think at all and your body is entirely controlled by impulse however you're still there in the eyes of your zombie body, kind of like when you're overwhelmed with anger and shout things you don't really mean, you're there and know you're there but your personality doesn't exist anymore and you're a completely diferent person because, in that case, it's caused by an avalanche of emotional stimulus, and in the zombie case by controlled brain damage.

13:08 I like this explaination for Zombie Strength. Always found it odd when someone struggles against a walking pile of rotting flesh and bones which should not be able to exert that much force. I just thought it was all uninhibited muscle power due to the Zombies not feeling pain and their muscular inhibitors becoming defunct after conversion. These Zombies would be powerful, but overtime the strain will cause them to break down to the point they become prone to injuring themselves. And since they can't self-repair/heal, older Zombies become weaker. It is the fresh ones you have to look out for.

I like the touch about the fibers building in coma. My friend was in a coma for months and normally the muscles would lead to weakness and muscle loss, but he was in a constant state of tension in coma and didn't experience any loss in muscle mass. This meant when he woke up that his physical therapy was relatively short and he was just really sore. This happened before I met him but I found it fascinating.

Considering that one of the main reasons for Zombie's rotting is due to the fact that the heart no longer beats, I’m curious as to what would happen if the victim had something like a pacemaker or an artificial heart to keep up proper blood flow.

I think that a Zombies increase in physical strength isn't due to a mutation or growth of additional muscles fibers, but by the fact their brains limited functionality no longer limits the strength their skeletal muscles are able to exert. There are many stories and recorded instances where a human is capable of extreme feats of strength in times of crisis, such as a mother lifting something really heavy off of a child, so it is this type of instance that is occurring when Zombies are in Hunt/Attack Mode. When attacking a Zombies brain no longer limits their physical strength but this also means they are slowly damaging their muscles each time they do so.

Also keep in mind, lactic acids in your muscle will prevent overexertion and permanent damage to the muscle. As you build muscle and strength train the buildup of lactic acids is lessened. The walking dead no longer possess active lactic acids which is as they say "all or nothing". Which is why when a walking corpse grabs you it's a death grip i.e. steel-like in pressure and to the point where it can break the victim's bones. Think of it this way. When a person punches another person. They feel the impact and recoil in pain because hitting a person in the head or whatever part of the body where it's mostly bone. That person will hurt their hands and bleed because of pain receptors in the person's brain and pain receptors are there for good reasons. It's the same story as punching a brick wall it's going to hurt no matter what happens. However as zombies, those pain receptors become inert and zombies can take on an onslaught of damage and continue as if nothing happened. Zombies are basically walking vice 🗜️ grips. Cheers 🥂

I’ve always thought mass zombie outbreaks in fiction felt weird with how they’re portrayed, so this is a fun reimagining of them being more like flu or something, still deadly but a lot less so

I'd say it's more akin to something like leprosy than flu. With flu (and many other viruses) the disease is extremely contagious, with a relatively low amount of the infected dying, which increases the odds of them spreading the disease to a new host, as the sooner the virus kills the host, the less time they have to spread the disease. With this variation of the zombie, the disease almost always infects an exposed victim, and WILL inevitably kill them eventually, with the spread being limited by the fact that it's relatively difficult for exposure to occur despite the infection taking a long time to kill the host. (Leprosy isn't a direct comparison though, as its spread is also hindered by the fact that most exposed potential hosts are naturally immune to it, and thus can't be infected in the first place, but I'm sleep deprived and couldn't think of something more fitting.)

I bet it's something like...... A new part of the brain evolves which wirelessly connects the mind of a witch to quantum physics. This allows the witch to intentionally cause quantum entanglement and the like through the power of focused thoughts. Spells are psychic programs sent into the quantum reality by witches to cause different effects on their chosen targets. But what could cause such a quantum brain evolution? I wish I knew more science so I could make a better and more realistic explanation for witches.

​@Mikado sannoji depends on how the series portrays its zombies, but yes. That's even exactly what happened in 28 days later. The infected didn't really eat anything since they were hyper focused on spreading infection, and that caused them to all die out after a month

depends on range I'd imagine, don't know much about the technicality regarding guns but if you totally pulverized the entire brain to the point it basically isn't there anymore, it's functionally the same as severing it at the brain stem

I’m wondering if you can give a zombie cancer in order to make it permanently die faster. The way I’m thinking about it is that cancer is a leech, and the virus is a leech, so both anomalies would be competing against each other for resources in the host, which would drastically decrease the lifetime of the affected zombie. Also, while a zombie has regenerative abilities, the cancer would just keep coming back, so it could also overwhelm that specific strength a zombie has.

Unless you can specifically cause a brain cancer that grows 30 times faster than normal you're not doing anything worthwhile. Bone cancer could maybe shut down limbs quicker? But I'm not sure their cells even replicate, so could a cancer grow?

Nice. Severing limbs might not kill a zombie, but it definitely reduce their already low mobility quite substantially, which will increase one's chance of surviving the attack by a big margin. Thx for the video!

The wendigo is both the name of a spirit and the state of the possessed person, it's in more than one native mythology under different names with some variety of small details changed. The constant is that in order for there to BE one in the first place requires someone to be possessed shortly after eating human flesh. People who do so out of desperation rarely become possessed, but are treated cautiously just in case.

It's just a scary story to explain the diseases that can transfer via cannibalism. And how far away from their humanity the people who enjoy it become. What I don't understand in zombie films is why don't scientist do an autopsy on the brain. Seems like the only way to kill a zombie is the brain, so the virus must be doing something there.

Something I noticed on previous listens (while going to sleep, good bedtime stories lol), but haven't seen mentioned, is the implications, specifically with things like the Zombie virus, is the Narrator isn't just finding subjects in the wild, for his studies to be accurate, he needs to have a full view of the process from start to end, and based off the dialogue, it's implied there were multiple victims- I mean subjects. It reminds me of the experiments done in war, that have advanced our understanding of medicine by miles, I cant speak exactly for which war and which factions specifically for this example, but take the process of Frostbite for one, our great understanding of how it works is a direct result of experiments done on prisoners of war and other assorted victims. The horrors committed that have directly contributed to the saving of lives in the future- yeah, the research our Narrator is doing reminds me of that a bit. I've been watching these out of order based on what interests me, so I can't really speak on the direct progression of the implied story and development of the narrator. But I was listening to I think this one one night and was hit by the realization that this Narrator dude, who I had seen simply as a researcher doing research, was not merely an observer, but an active participant in the discoveries he is documenting. Sometimes we forget just what "research" entails, it's not merely reading the work of another and absorbing it into your learning. A significant portion of it is active discovery in the field and observation, where YOU are the one writing down what future pupils learn. SOMEone has to figure this stuff out, and you won't always be a passive observer to get the answers you seek. I can't be bothered to rewatch the video at the moment to get my thoughts more organized, so I'll probably come back later when im ready to see it fresh and edit my comment, but yeah, that's just the vibe I got half-asleep a few nights ago Thanks for bothering to read this :b
