Rob, I grew up in Hancock Park and now live in West Adams near Fairfax. I have at least a hundred friends and clients in both The Palisades and Altadena that lost their homes, and NONE of them are “Hollywood bigwigs” or the sort of people that have anything to do with the trash Hollywood entertainment has been pumping out the last few years. They are honest, hard-working people with husbands and wives and children. My son’s 3rd grade teacher lost her house in the Palisades. She’s a single mom of two daughters.

You should get something because you deserve it - not because of any other reason!" (49:43) I concur: we need Democrats to start talking common sense -- like they used to do!!!

This conflagration is tragic. I agree with RMB that rebuilding and "fixing" these destroyed L.A. communities will be "a complete sh!tshow!" (48:10) So many competing interests with lots of money involved. Money will be taken by the government (e.g., for permits, inspections, etc.); costs be will high to satisfy all of the new codes (building and safety, etc), contractors will be charging excessively, etc., etc. Sadly, too much greed and regulators trying to justify their existence and salaries.

It might be that ‘Authenticity’ thang, but many times I find your Robservations cut through the disfunstional, tribal rabbit hole bullshit. I know it’s not your thing, but whenever you do address our social issues, it’s common sense brilliant. Do more!

The people complaining about polical agendas after a school shooting tend to be the people talking about political agendas after a disastrous fire like the fire California is facing right now. While the need to point fingers from a position of desperation is understandable, it's also a concern for tomorrow. Right now it's a disaster to many people, just like there was for people in the Carolinas in 2024. Sure. But it's still a human tragedy. Let's be kind to our neighbours and help those in need without a distraction. Through all this I just want to rewatch Chinatown. Even though it's a 50-year old film taking place in the early 20th century, I feel it's still very topical.

My thoughts & prayers go out to the people of LA. That said, I think your elected officials have likely failed you guys horribly for a long time. Im not an expert in the local politics there, but in my profession as a control systems engineer, the electrical circuits & control houses I work on when I receive projects in SoCal are horribly maintained & the hardware itself is woefully outdated when compared to the latest technologies being implemented elsewhere in the country. I dont know how it gets that bad without malpractice by local officials for decades.

I agree with you, Rob. I wouldn’t word it exactly the same way because I think merit is kind of a myth But you’re absolutely right that, as a society, we shy away from doing the hard work. We don’t want to face adversity. We’ve built a culture of convenience, where everything is streamlined, instant, and accessible. We’ve grown used to life being easy, and it shows in how unprepared we are for the storms on the horizon. World War III feels closer than it has in decades, with geopolitical tensions ramping up and old alliances fraying. Meanwhile, massive unemployment is looming as automation advances. Machines are learning to do jobs better and faster than humans ever could, and we’re not ready for the societal upheaval that will come when entire industries are upended. Add to that the accelerating impacts of climate change-floods, droughts, fires, and a ticking clock on our ability to fix it-and you have a perfect storm brewing. We’re not mentally or emotionally prepared for things to get harder. We’ve built systems of comfort and convenience to shield us from hardship, but in doing so, we’ve forgotten how to struggle. We’ve created a kind of learned helplessness, where we wait for someone else to solve our problems. Politicians. Corporations. Activists. Anyone but ourselves. And like you said, everyone wants a cut of the pie. No tragedy goes to waste as the bureaucracy carves up the pie for people to get rich. I feel like we’ve lost our cultural grit. The generations that faced the Great Depression and World War II understood hardship because they had no choice. They built resilience by necessity. But today, we’ve outsourced that resilience. We want easy answers, quick fixes, and minimal discomfort. And as a result, when the shit hits the fan-and it will-we won’t know how to respond. We’ll panic, blame others, and hope someone else steps in to save us. But no one is coming to save us. I think we're cooked.

You've done a great educational service here, Rob, especially considering how the Friday Night Tights group of KZbinrs cheered on the destruction in LA. Nerdrotic (Gary), Ryan Kinel, 1/4 Black Garrett, Chris Gore, Razorfist all had a big laugh while people died and thousands upon thousands of people's homes burned to the ground. Razorfist even posted a video titled "Burn Hollywood, Burn." That's the psychotic Republican way, folks. That's half of America. They take pleasure in other people's suffering - until it happens to them. Thankfully we have an intelligent, decent voice on KZbin in the form of Robert Meyer Burnett.

Living abroad, I can't weigh in on local politics, but I'm at roughly the same latitude as California, and the weather here has been quite unpredictable lately. It's winter now, yet here I am, wearing a short-sleeved t-shirt while looking out my window at 10 PM in January. We've had some rain, but it's been surprisingly warm. Sadly, it seems we'll encounter more of these extreme weather events in the future, whether they're wildfires or significant floods like those seen in Spain a few months ago. Those who have been sounding the alarm about these changes are often dismissed online by climate change deniers or by those merely looking to cause disruption. It feels like we're becoming accustomed to this, making one ponder what the next "normal" will look like. I sympathize with everyone grappling with these weather-related challenges and hope they recover quickly. I also hope that those who might try to profit from these disasters don't hinder the recovery efforts. My thoughts are with the people in California at this moment.
