Why We Sit On The Floor (Furniture-Free Living)

We constantly receive questions about why we sit on the floor; IRL from visitors of our home, and in the comments section of our social media channels.
We didn't commit to sitting on the floor on a whim. Apart from looking cool, we have other solid reasons for doing so. Hopefully this video does a decent job of addressing some of the questions that you may have!
Again, we must emphasize we're not suggesting that one way of sitting is superior to another. Please consult an expert near you if you're thinking of giving it a shot, and have your own concerns. No matter what though, please don't be sedentary and move more!

as a physiotherapist, what you are doing is so good for your body. Not only will this reduce the muscle aches and pains a lot of people get from sitting in a prolonged position, but you're also reducing the likelihood of getting diabetes and heart disease with your frequent position changes. Great work!!

It's funny to me to read some of the more negative comments, and how sitting on the floor isn't good for you. Humans survived thousands of years without furniture. Personally, I was getting less flexible and strong as the years went by, and started doing less and less. Then I took a full year and started sleeping on the floor, sitting on the floor, and doing things the more natural way, rather than the lazy American way. At 58, I am now far more flexible than I was in my 20's and I sleep better too. I can touch my hands flat on the ground, (something my son can't do) and can do a deep squat with no problems, and I no longer have back pain. Oh....and before I did this, I consulted my doctor, who had me on pain meds for my many aches and pains, who told me that doing this was going to hurt me. The only thing that hurt me, was listening to the doctor.

Thank you so much for this post! I'm roughly the same age and looking at ways to get back on the floor. I'm not really sure when I stopped doing that and I was so shocked a couple of years ago to discover how stiff and inabled I had become! A couple of years ago I opted for a low bed mattress on the floor, as I recall) but gave it up because it was too much of a challenge to get in and out of. Also, I felt so rickety but even once I got upright I wasn't convinced I wouldn't fall over! Do you have any tips for transitioning back to sitting on the floor or sleeping on the floor (as a teenager, for a few years I opted to sleep on the floor)? I've been trying to find some decent cushioning for sitting. Only because if I sit on a hard surface at triggers my sciatica... maybe with any luck it will go away as I become more agile.

I do agree with this comment, but in such questions, there is a line where the "item is just a modern day luxury" and a necessity lack of which might reduce your life span by some years. Slowly making the transition to move away from a desk setup. I am currently under 20s so this might be an easier or an harder shift for me, depends

8 years ago when I was single, I moved to a different city. I got rid of all my furniture: my desk and chair, couches, and bed-frames. Knowing that I would be moving again, I avoided buying any big furniture. I had a foam mattress which I'd drop on the floor and sleep on at night. During the day, I would sit on the mattress with my back against the floor when I was on my laptop. I ended up living that way for the next 3 years. I am married and we have a child and own our home with all kinds of furniture but, I never got a around to buying a proper office desk and chair yet. I will soon have a room in the house that will be my office. However, now, I have second thoughts about getting any furniture for it. I searched for ideas and and I found your video. I think I am quite convinced I should go back to sitting on the floor. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

I LOVE sitting on the floor. I was homeschooled up until college, so I wasn't forced to sit in chairs all day long -- I think that's contributed to my deep comfort with not using chairs. Quarantine has been a great time to spend more time on the floor, as I definitely don't get to do that at work normally.

I feel like healthy minimal sitting is a good way to combat overwork culture too. With more people working from home due to the Coronavirus, I hope people will intuitively realize that, if you can't sit up anymore cross legged with maybe a pillow or two at your coffee table, or have to be propped up by an office chair and arm rests, then it's probably time to go to bed.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve always found chairs uncomfortable. Even in school as a kid I alternated folding one leg onto the chair like a half cross legged position. Needed one foot on the floor for balance and such. My couch is just an elevated floor area. So when it came to finding a desk I decided to build one for the floor. I searched KZbin for suggestions to build this floor desk and came across this video. Couldn’t agree more!

Absolutely, sitting on the floor is the way to go. We tend to forget sometimes that we humans are still animals. We evolved all the tools we need to function. Which includes the ability to sit wherever we are. Human beings didn't come into existence with high chairs and tables. Sitting on the ground is our natural way of resting. Unless you have a severe disability or injury that prevents you from doing so, I would recommend it to anybody.

For some reason, I just had the thought to try and sit on the ground with my laptop, and I got so much work done, seriously! It's amazing how one small change can change your productivity. Thanks you! You’ve just saved me hours and hours of research to compare if sitting in the floor is better or not. I did not have a desk in my childhood or teen years, we played and did art on the floor at home, so sitting in the ground feels more natural to me. Although because I am now a-custom to sitting at a desk from work and study culture…. I find myself doing and swapping with both styles (even on the couch)… because no matter where I sit, I have to switch positions at least every half and hour or so. Thanks again ☀️

This actually made me notice something funny. For most of 2019 I was sitting on the floor, using a coffee table while on my computer, and while it was kinda uncomfortable, and I moved around alot to adjust pressure points, I was generally more productive, and felt better. However I got a desk/chair in early 2020, and productivity has generally went down. However back then I was also eating better, and did some exercise, so that likely had a large role too. so cant really say for certain, just something Im gonna keep in mind.

This video had me stretching an squatting as I watched. When I had floor furniture (living room and bedroom) I felt like my digestion improved and sitting and standing always felt like more of a full body relief than the weird half extension feeling you get from sitting at a normal height. Like, it just makes you more aware and it's the least you can do. Of course, I've found having a mix of furniture at different heights affects how comfortable I feel sitting. When I had only my bedroom with low profile furniture I enjoyed sitting on the floor much more than when I mixed in taller shelves, bureaus, etc.

And decided to live without furniture. I sat on my mat for all my meals. I lay on my tummy to work my laptop. I rolled around and stood up from the floor. What freedom. I have a bed but nap on my mat on the floor. I have a pillow and blanket folded by my mat. I bought a couple of chairs for visitors. It is a new uncluttered and healthy way of living. I am 70 years old and it was 4 years ago I decided to go minimalist. Other than my 3 times a week yoga on my mat I had never actually sat on the floor. I've been floor-sitting for about half a year now and it's nice to see other locals who do the same. I decided to make the switch from desk to floor because I do a lot of craftwork and sewing, and I find that sprawling out all my materials onto the floor was much easier than trying to cram everything onto my desk or have things half falling off, so I was always on the floor anyway. When I decided to make the switch, my parents would say things like how the floor is cold and would affect my legs, or how my knees would be affected by the amount of standing and going down I would need to do. But honestly, my legs have never felt better :) At first, it actually took some conscious effort to get up but now it's super easy. During the colder months I just lay an old coat on the floor so that it's not as chilly. If I've been sitting for too long, I can do some pushups very easily cus I'm already on the floor. Even better, if I'm watching a show just plank all the way 😂 So like both of you, I've found benefits to floor sitting compared to sitting on a regular chair. It's really about finding what works best for each individual.

As a German who loves to eat while sitting on the floor or loves to sleep on the floor, I have a hard time finding anyone who shares those wishes. None of my familiy members or my friends could image doing that, therefore I don't really have a choice, because it surely would look weird to eat on the floor all by myself while everyone else is eating at the table 😂 Also I don't want to sleep sleep alone on the floor, while my wife and my kids are sleeping somewhere else.

😂 It would be a funny sight to see someone insisting on sitting on the floor when the rest are sitting at a table. But yeah, some social norms are hard to break. Thankfully it's just the two of us in our apartment, so we have less obstacles to work through. Cheers!

In Germany, do slightly larger Gatherings sometimes have a "kids' table"? 😀 I'm in Canada, and we used to hate that as kids.. that at some get-togethers the adults would sit at the regular table and the kids had to go sit at the smaller one... It was always really annoying when you got older and you still had to sit with the little kids lol Hiwever, maybe there's a way you / we can incorporate that idea? Whether Separate Tables or something else. In one's own home, if one knew how or could hire somebody, to design and build a large elevated surface ( essentially a raised floor) that we could sit on, but bring ourselves to the same level as a regular table?

The idea of the sit/stand desk was taken from this theory. We should not stay in this tight positions for too long. I wish the sit/stand desks went down to the ground like this - they would be a gamechanger. ALSO - I practice this with my mattress as I am a strong believer that box springs/platform boards or any other raised surface has deflection that translates up to your back. A lot of people complain about getting in and out of the bed from this level which is understandable for some. For others that are physically able it seems to mostly comes off as annoying which also reflects the lack of mobility they practice in their own life. But think about this - When you get out of bed from a raised bed you essentially turn, sit-up and move your legs out into a seated position and stand. When you get out of bed from it being on the floor you have to either use all of your limbs, turn 180 degrees facing down to get to a hands and knees position (also helps your organs turn and tumble a bit which can help for morning BM), then one leg up at a time which is going to require you to crunch a little and stretch your groin a bit. In some cases you can turn hands and knees and tilt back to a dip squat and stand up. You are also putting a lot more compression on your limbs which some can argue is not wanted but this isn't sports, this is getting out of bed lol. One thing for sure is your brain will be programmed to be more enthusiastic in getting up bc you have to and its better to as opposed to "dragging" yourself out of bed from a ground position. I can keep writing more and more but I think I made my point.

You might want to try sitting on the edge of your floor-chair, using it as a prop to tilt your pelvis. In this case, a mat on the floor will provide some comfort to your ankles. There's also this ergonomic product which you can sit on to adjust your posture and reduce back pain.

We sit on chairs that support our backs. Now we cant support our own. I believe this is where a lot of my back pain, neck pain, and stiffness in the hips came from. I've recently started to sit on the floor felt the freedom and benefits that come with it. Thank you guys for making this video. Hopefully this "trend" (which has ironically been forgotten thanks to civilization) will start to gain popularity in Western culture. FLOOR GANG. FUCK CHAIRS 2021 TEEHEE

@@ThoughtworthyCo I was just wondering about that. I grew up in Japan, and live in the United States. Like you guys, I am a huge fan of sitting on the floor as it creates more movement opportunities and options than chairs/sofas. We're (my wife and I) considering to have a local furniture store make a Japanese style table "Chabudai", as we're not very good at making things. I love your channel by the way!! Great contents and great videos! We seem to have very similar lifestyles. Eat well. Move well and more. Live well. Worry less! Thanks for creating great videos!

@@TaroIwamoto Hello! We're not good at making things too, when we say "we shortened the legs of our tables", we meant we gave instructions to our carpenter to shorten them 😂 Our ideal setup was originally a Chabudai + Zabuton + Zafu combo. But we didn't have much luck finding any that aren't overpriced here in Singapore, so we just used them as inspiration and looked for alternatives. Thank you for the kind words. I just realized I've (Glo) watched your video about sitting on the floor when I was browsing what other people had to say about floor sitting 👍 Keep making videos! Best of health to you and your wife 💪

@@ThoughtworthyCo Thanks! The same thing overhere in the United States. We dont find chabudai that arent overpriced. Hopefully our local furniture store can make one at a reasonable price for us. Thanks for watching my video on the benefits of sitting on the floor! I am realizing that this concept has many benefits especially as we get older. I dont know in Singapore, but in the United States, many people struggle to sit on the floor, which in itself is not a problem but affects overall movement quality over time, which can be problematic. Anyway, I am making more videos around this topic, and short movement practice, exercises to improve movement quality. Happy mindful movement!

What brand are those chairs you ended up getting; do you have a link for them? I'm considering sitting on the floor to give more options in a tiny/small house design. Additionally I was looking at designs with a trundle bed, when pushed in there is a ledge you could sit on and using those chairs would add a backrest when sitting on the ledge.
