Matt, your channel is just the best. I’m loving all these explores away from home. I’m really beginning to work out your personality more now you’re on your own. And you’re awesome. I feel part of your journey now, rather than just looking into your journey. I like the history, your knowledge on antiques, your humour, and of course Bear. I really wish your channel keeps growing in 2024 with lots of new subscribers as you deserve it Wishing you and your family best wishes. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Yet again, Matt, you have gone above and beyond. I feel like I'm with you on your adventures literally. The questions, who, when, where, what, how. The history AMAZING, if only we had a time machine, just to nip back in time, to see the answers to our questions. ❤❤❤

OAnother amazing explore Matt..the treadwheel was used for the prisoners to grind corn etc and they basically made the wheel turn using their body weight and were literally exhausted at the end of the shift. Oscar Wilde was put on it back in the day for gross indecency, it was like a hamster on it's wheel basically and known as death by exercise. Loved the history of this explore as it was full of information and set the cogs going around in my head.I appreciated you freezing your conkers off to do this explore..great work Matt thank you 😊 I loved your Larry grayson impersonation when you were looking at the clock..you said SHUT THAT DOOR 😂 I love a good pipe band xxxx

TREADWHEEL: treadwheel, penal appliance introduced in 1818 by the British engineer Sir William Cubitt (1785-1861) as a means of usefully employing convicts. The device was a wide hollow cylinder, usually composed of wooden steps built around a cylindrical iron frame, and was designed in some cases to handle as many as 40 convicts. As the device began to rotate, each prisoner was forced to continue stepping along the series of planks. The power generated by the treadwheel was commonly used to grind corn and pump water, although some served no purpose at all other than punishment. The use of treadwheels was abolished in Britain by the Prisons Act of 1898.

So much history in this sad and rundown place. Love the old American clock and there was some not too bad furniture and “stuff” you found, the story of the treadmill and the gallows was an added bonus. Now…off to watch another explore from you…love you to bits.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

The Governor's house is now on the market and priced at a modest £40,000. The house is part of a broader gaol complex, most of which has been demolished. The B1 listed building was built in 1820 by renowned Irish architect John Hargreaves for £17,000.

The print of the Maori woman is by Charles Goldie. The women is Kati Kati, an Arawa Cheiftainess who died in 1902 aged 102. The original painting was sold through the Otago Art Society in 1915 in Dunedin, which is where I live! The orginal is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars now.

Great video, Matt! That hook on that winch was almost as big as your head, damn straight you would have felt it, even if you only grazed it. It was stock still prior to you filming it swinging. What freaked me out is I had just had the thought 'I hope that winch doesn't move., and then it did! The lighting was bluish inside, and was still kind of weird outside. All of the lights were yellow, and those trees looked surreal. I thought it may have had something to do with the frost in the air, it was bizarre though. 😊

I agree with you about walking in their foot steps! It is really an awesome feeling. I live in the upper midwest of the US and I often look around and wonder about the Native Americans looking at the same areas. Where they might have set up camp by a river or a lake. Or hunted for their meals and clothing. How our ancestors might have seen it when they came over on the big ships and then made their way here. We're a spoiled people now!

FUN EXPLORE! Enjoy everyone's comments and research for your questions on items and buildings! What a great group this is that watch your videos! My 2 cents...little Pottery pieces were Italian majolica, look Bassano, I think fairly rare? Anyway, others found great info on things... treadwheel, etc. "The Keep" on the exterior door indicates the tower part of a castle or building, which makes sense here. Thanks, Matt! Always enjoy your explores!

40:40 & 45:50 the first painting is the Haywain by John Constable (1821) and the second appears to be a 3d recreation of the Fighting Temeraire by JMW Turner (1838) - the artist who pretty much recorded the entire Industrial Revolution through his paintings.
