I bought a 1993 FXLR anniversary model No. 51 of 800. Great story on this bike. It was around $13,000. I sold it to a friend in 2003. He just passed away July 2023 and I got the bike back after 20 years later. Crazy to be back on it at 70 years old.

The MSRP on the 93 FXRS was $11,800. That was a decent chunk of money back then. Hope this helps. BTW I'm an EVO fan, better engines with all bearings and no issues with crank run out, cam plates or the cam chain tensioners like on the twin cam.

We, ( wife and I) own 3 FXRs, hers is a custom 1982 ( first year) with a warmed over shovelhead engine. It’s a real surprise to those that expect an old shovel to run like an old shovel. We did a LOT of upgrades to the motor and installed a later model trans. The motor is around 86” now running and EVO valve train and BDL belt drive and clutch. It’s quick, nimble and smooth. We also have an 87 FXRS-SP with a 96” S&S motor, that motor makes a world of difference in performance. At around 100HP it will get your attention, and again , surprises the hell out of a lot of new bike guys with a LOT more money invested. With Dave Mackie head work and cam and a BUB pipe and Bandit clutch, it puts the power to the ground but still rides smooth all day long. The last is a Pro street configuration that was popular in the 90s. It was more of a resurrection for fun than anything else. The frames are totally different and lend well to custom work. It doesn’t handle like a stocker, but with an107” S&S motor it’s a hoot to ride and keeps up with most anything on the highway today. Cornering is more akin to any other custom type bike with less ground clearance than a normal FXR. It’s more like a cross between an FXR and a Softail. Still a real hoot to ride though. With the die-off of the fat tire “ choppers” those engines and drive trains can be found pretty cheap with low miles. Making for some great custom stuff after a little retuning. Those 90s FXRs need very little to bring them into modern performance and braking and are well worth the effort. I do admit the FXDX and street bones were some pretty damn fine Dynas though. Updating the cam drive paid big dividends on them. Still, I’ll stick with the EVOS and FXRS …

Great video, one thing I noticed is the dyna has a chain whereas the fxr has the belt. Even assuming the ratios are the same with the chain the power feels more direct. Might have something to do with the delivery. As an FXR owner it is a labor of love to own one which is why most people go through them 100%. Killer video either bike is a winner in my book

82' fxrs solid lift cam via shovelhead w a kick start on it has the best sound, relatively slow but is ridden as a daily commuter via solo riding. 87' tcfxrpi fuel injected 103, stock 6 speed, cams; pulls like a freight train w manley valves hit 89 mph in the 1/8th mile drags. 91' 103 tcfxr 5 speed swap, 45 mikunni. ran for it for years as an 88 tc w 543 fueling cams, finally rebuilding bigger; was a straight work horse as an 88, 100 mph cruising no problemo. i have a 14' dyna w 57h cams and a chain drive and i just dont like riding it in comparison to the fxr's. still would like to build a sporty powered fxr. best fxr...the one you build and ride.

The engine also had to be pre assembled before installing. Couldn’t install the heads and rocker boxes while bottom end was in the frame. It came down to being a cheaper build for Harley switching to the dyna platform. And let’s not forget, when the fxr was being built and sold it was their furthest thing from popular. All the hell yeh brothers said it looked to much like a “jap bike” that’s why a lot of the bikes you’d find from that era, guys were putting wide glide or touring front ends on them, chopping and raking the frames, anything they could do to make them look like a “Harley”. The look is what everyone craved. If they had just ridden the bike like it was intended to be ridden they would’ve realized all their cosmetic “upgrades” were destroying the best Harley ever built.

You take that evo and freshen it up with a good cam and head work and it’ll walk that twin cam. And those that’ll say it’s “modified” are correct however it’s still less CI than the twin cam. Honestly chain conversion, engine refresh, suspension upgrade, and brake upgrade it’ll be a no brainer. I’ve owned quite a few bikes and none of them even come close to the fxr I own. It’s definitely my forever bike.

I didn’t get my own Harley until 2002 I picked up an FXDL in Annapolis for $15.6k. That was a chunk of change for E-4 in the Navy. I still have that bike. (Took it from an 88ci to a 95ci gear drive in 2008) Yeah I’ve gotten the Dyna wobble but yeah keeping up on your mounts and fork brace kind of ended that. I definitely want to pick up an Early 90s FXR Lowrider though. Nice Vid guys 🤙🏽

I myself own both, a 2004 Dyna and the very last year 2000 FXR4, my Dyna is efi not carb so I can’t compare it with my carb FXR. However the late model FXR has the same dual piston brakes found on the Dyna as well as the same 39mm forks. The Dyna is definitely quicker but the FXR has a more planted feeling , by far the frame makes all the difference in the world . I think a better comparison would be your 2001 Dyna and my 2000 FXR4, perhaps we can make that happen sometime. If I could only have one, hands down the FXR4.

Both bikes can be purposely build for any type of riding. A Mild street commuter to a go fast hot rod. FXR’s handle the best. No argument there. But to take your FXR and make it reliable. Take lots of money and lots of very good parts. Technology has definitely changed a lot for Harley’s. Not just electronics, but suspension , brakes, wheel size, etc… considering what we are doing now to our bikes. If you fitted both bikes with high end suspension, bigger brakes, bigger motors, who would come out on top? The legend continues…..🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽.

I owned an '03 FXD that I converted to a dual disc front end with works springs and works 13.5" shocks( basically turned it to an fxdx) it definitely was a more nimble aggressive handling bike compared to my '14 fxdl. I also owned an '09 road king and in my personal opinion it out handled both my dynas and you say more in the bike than on it like you do with the dynas. I've ridden my dad's 1985 FXRS with single disc 35mm narrow glide and it felt like my road king just with way worse braking lol. I have a 94 FXR that I did an inverted front end with dual disk radial brakes, I did an S&S v111” engine, Brock’s swing arm with a rear radial caliper taller suspension. Bike is like a heavier sport bike now. Absolutely rips, and goes wherever you point it. One of the best handling bikes I’ve ever ridden( not just because it’s mine)

I had two FXRs and one Dyna. I would go with the FXR , that’s why I kept one of FXRs and got rid of the Dyna. On the FXR I was riding in the bike , as one with it. But on the Dyna I was sitting on it, not to my liking

Like... how many times can you guys say like, the word "like" in like, 20 minutes? Both those bikes would need a fair amount of upgrades to improve on performance and dependability. That being said, my choice would be the FXR all day long.

😂😂😂 I've tried everything to get rid of my dyna wobble....fxr motor mounts, engine stabilizers, upgraded suspension front and back... short of swapping out for an aluminum swing arm and inverted forks, I'm out of options. My FXR is totally money though..... don't have a single complaint

One thing you could've added was power potential. Not likely that either would stay stock long. For big power on Evo you need to save up 4k for ultima swap. Twin cam can do 97 inch big bore kit for half the money. Kinda like to see a 3 way comparison with a 1200 roadster. Or even a $5 Sportster with few grand in upgrades. Suspension and 1250 kit. Just for sheets and giggles

Both bikes are great to own. A quad cam EVO with upgrade to 1250 or 1275 with .567+ cams will smoke both of these, but everyone is afraid to ride a “girls bike”. Parrallel push rods are always more conducive to make more power then criss-cross push tubes.

Got my '90 FXR SuperGlide for 10k in '89. Started wrenching at a dealer in '90. Rode lots of FXRs and FXDs. With same shocks/forks FXD sits higher and center of gravity is higher, they feel much heavier to me. XLs got lower in the turns but nobody wanted to ride one all day. 35 years same bike, 95hp, better brakes, suspension, trans. FXR for me.

I will always pick my 2004 FXDL over my 2023 street bob all day long. the bob is for my commute, just slogging miles in traffic in the greater DC area. the dyna is more comfortable and just IMO way cooler than the softail. Never rode an FXR. maybe some day.

I currently own a 91 FXRS- SP with 56,xxx trouble free miles. Ive cammed it , S&S Super E carb and it has a vance & Hines exhaust. Handles fantastic . Definitely quicker and faster than stock. But its still not fast or quick by any real measure in my opinion. I also have a 06 Dyna Low Rider. It has 14,091 miles right now ( just looked ) it has cams , power commander, Thunder Header. Faster than stock as well as faster than the FXR. The low rider is more comfortable and a better bike on a long ride. FXR is funner in the curves. The Dyna feels a lot heavier. Both are great bikes in my opinion

I have to say that being a guy that was born and raised in South Dakota, Rapid City area to be exact, I have never owned an Harley. Been a brand X guy my hole 53 year life. After watching your blogs and other video's, I think I am jumping on the FXR or Dyna train! Just need to sell a 2006 Honda VTX1300 to help finance the endeavor! Did see a 1989 FXRS for sale in lower Alabama recently for $4,800 but missed out on the deal!

If you ever ridden both for a decent amount of miles well... FXR all day. Frame design on the FXR just handles better. It's a stiffer frame. Makes all the difference.
@mikesutterfield5901
@mikesutterfield5901 5 ай бұрын
The FXR frame required the engine to be assembled in the frame which was costly since the engines weren't made in the same factory as the bikes were assembled. That's why is was "costly" and eventually discontinued. It is a superior handling frame.

I had a '95 Evo FXDL, now have a '99 TC88 FXDL. Wouldn't go back. EBC HH front pads make twin disc work with one finger mostly. EBC FA200HH don't work in the rear but they are still selling them. Harley pads for 91-99 have no bite, sure the discs don't wear out but that's no good if it doesn't stop. Stock cams in the 88 are tame, no issues with the spring tensioners here but I change the oil and check the shoes as recommended. Wheel bearings need to be in spec for the roller type and need to warm up to handle well.

2:57 I have a really hard time believing the dry weight on an FXDX is 661lbs. Weirdly enough, I've found multiple spec sheets that claim 619lbs as dry weight, and equally as many that claim 661. For reference, a 2017 Dyna Lowrider S has a 664 pound dry weight according to the spec sheet. All I know is that my FXDX feels and handles like a 400 pound bike and that's all that matters to me. On a side note, I've had both bikes, and in my opinion, you can't beat an 04-05 dyna with fuel injection. The FXR I had was cool, but they are absolutely a labor of love. I rode mine 3 times and it catastrophically broke down on me twice. My 2004 has been very solid however. If you're interested in an FXR, just get one that's been restored and you'll have a really nice handling bike.

If the FXR has a hot rod engine fitted along with decent engine mounts it'll maybe be in contention but as my 2010 Dyna (with Chopper Hauss mounts) has a reworked 113" CVO topend along with everything else done, it's 130+ bhp and torque is in a different world to a 40 year old bike !

The stock TC in the FXDX is nearly a square engine whereas the Evo has an extra .5" stroke with a smaller bore. That should influence what you feel, and it seems to come out a bit in your talk on comparing the rides.
