Thank you for explaining this so well. I'm a firearms technology student and trying to learn the barrel threading process has proved very challenging to me.

The people making barrels at McGowen Precision Barrels need you to show them how to properly thread barrels because they suck at it and could learn a lot by watching your videos.

Thank you for the kind words. It took a lot of practice getting to this point

I’m just learning machining. Are you using a spider on the other side of your headstock? Also, what’s the downside to threading with a live center? I know the steady rest might scratch the barrel, but there’s probably a way to mitigate that, right?

I don’t use a spider. My chuck adjust every direction required. In my opinion them way I hold the barrel is hands down the best way…. No chance of bending or scratching a barrel. Plus it allows to cut a new crown true to the threads and bore.

What threading tool are you using. Nice video

Thank you for the kind words! I use Mesa threading tools. They can be brittle but they work well for the money

For Remington having the worst factory barrels there is every one I have fired has been crazy accurate. Just saying.

No way I'd trust that sleeve you just slid on to that barrel. You said yourself some are 15 thousandths out and you just clamped on to it.
@DustinDrews1 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinroberts781not sure if you seen what i did in the video when i indicated the barrel. The aluminum sleeve has a taper cut inside of it that matches the taper of the barrel. It’s only purpose is to give me something, round and parallel for the lathe jaws to clamp on to. My Chuck can be adjusted in 8 different directions. This adjustment allows the barrel to be moved in anyway required to align it to the bore of the lathe. Your correct just clamping the barrel in the aluminum sleeve and making the cut’s would not be trustworthy. Thanks for the comment let me know if you want me to explain it further. God Bless, Dustin

Yeah it is crazy how bad some barrels can be yet still shoot great

What's the easiest sks barrel to do this too? I wanna chop to 14ish and thread 5/8x24 assuming its thick enough

Never been around a SKS I’m not your guy to answer that question
