Threading the Needle in Toledo: Following a Cargo Ship on Maumee River

Hey everyone,
I started my day in search of action at the CSX coal dock in Toledo.
I didn't find anything going on, but I did follow the Algoma Sault as it navigated the Maumee River.
I hope you enjoy it.
If anyone has any information on when I could see the CSX Toledo coal dock in action, please do let me know.

That triple crown train is a fun one to ride on. Used it in Decatur IL to qualify in back in mid July while I was there. They held Amtrak for us in Springfield. Decatur IL is a yard you gotta see at some point. Huge yard for NS. They told me it’s the largest “flat switching yard” in North America

I'm hoping to make it to Decatur one day. I've had several people recommend the yard and talk about how big it is.

Your best bet is to start tracking boats in general. If you can tell a boat is coming in loaded with grain they’ll head up river. If you see one that unloaded at another nearby port and it’s heading to Toledo next there’s a high probability of it going to load coal.

For example I just pulled up AIS and I see the CSL ship RT Hon Paul J Martin finished an unload at Nanticoke Ontario and is now bound for Toledo. I’d put money on that one headed for the coal dock.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. And yes, the river can't be too deep, because that was a lot of mud. I'm guessing that the dredging operation must stay pretty busy.

That ship would have been heading to the grain elevators on the Northside of the river at i-75.

Hey Jackson! Thank you. Unfortunately, I don't have a good website for you. The downloader sites seem to change every so often. I don't remember which one I used for your videos. Whatever site it was though, I just took a chance on it. And once I downloaded the videos I would right click on them and scan them immediately before doing anything else. Sorry I'm not more help.

There is an option to download in KZbin but I believe it's only 720p. That may work if the quality is okay for you.

If you're just looking for a few specific parts, you could always do a screen record if you're on a Windows machine. I'm not sure if Apple will record the audio as well, but that might be something you can consider.

triple crown is still in business? all their trailer i see anymore have their logo stripped off and it's just the halo of the logo left! i don't think cheapskate is hauling much coal anymore that might be a once a month operation anymore!

The service only runs between Detroit and Kansas City these days. You're probably right, the yard and sock definitely seemed like there wasn't much activity going on.

@@nkyrailfanyeah i think NS has a good 85 to 90% of the coal trade or at least the bulk of coal being moved anymore and what cheapskate is moving tends to be at night probably for asinine eco related PR reasons! and the trucks i used to see ABF JIF and yellow around here all the time because they had terminals close to here in shelby and mansfield anymore it's just JB Hunt and Dutch maid here!
