Hey Kyle, I think there might have been something wrong with your Threadripper setup? I've watched multiple other reviews that launched today and all them show the 1950x blowing away the i9-7900x in productivity and VERY close in gaming applications. The delta in FPS your results show while gaming are not consistent at all with other reviews... Don't know what's going on
@foltarz84696 жыл бұрын
okay well it's been 2 years and you aint done another review I would like to see a comparison between the threadripper 1950X and the i9 9900k
@zycane7 жыл бұрын
These benchmarks sure look a lot different than those found at Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed, not to mention the distru/local do show performance differences, and more in-depth explanations of each tech inside the Threadripper of what may cause a performance difference, along with productivity and lower watt usage the Threadripper utterly destroys the current i9 lineup.

There are things you can do with threadripper you simply can't do with Intel CPUs. 4 graphics card with two x16 and two at x8 and m.2 raid. Think about this..a dual socket epyc server will have 240 pcie lanes. Not even a top of the line dual Xeon can do that.

Interesting. So both CPUs are fairly similar when it comes to productivity and 4K gaming. I'd personally be interested to see which comes out ahead while doing real-world stress tests, like streaming at high settings, playing a game at high settings, and doing a video export/render all at the same time.

Two problems with your review. Why are you using Premier Pro CS6 instead of the CC 2017? This could easily change that outcome. Second what about the 27 degree offset? You probably limited your Threadripper way more than you needed to.

I will be seriously considering the next 7nm gen threadrippers when they come out for my next rig. I'm doing mostly CPU bound content creation, i.e. rendering. I thought it was a no brainer, but I found out that ryzen only has half the AVX2 throughput. So I'll be closely watching how the specs change from both intel and amd in the coming 18 months or so. It would be cool if you guys gave a bit of airtime to the SIMD question, as I never see it mentioned anywhere on youtube.
@78MatWar877 жыл бұрын
I would love to know what exactly holds it back in gaming though, as the other benchmarks show the power is clearly there but as far as I see the only reason it gets lower performance in games is probably down to optimization in either the architecture or the games themselves. which makes me lean more towards buying the amd because they will likely update things like bios s and improve the performance where as I have my doubts anything will change with intel. I am very curious how future games that are programmed with ryzen in mind will perform like vs intel.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the CPUs that are sent out to reviewers usually binned? So if it takes 1.39 volts to hit 4.0 gigahertz on a Binned processor, aren't many of them require a lot more voltage? This doesn't really seem to bode well for the overclock ability of these threadripper CPUs
@anthonypedersen15557 жыл бұрын
Did you leave the 1950X stock when it was in game mode or did you have an overclock applied? GN showed that game mode sometimes improves it, but only if the cpu is left stock.

Seems as though stock Threadripper 1950X beats an overclocked i9 7900X in work related task. However it doesn't perform as well for gaming at 1080p and 1440p. But if someone is spending $1000 on a CPU, I'd imagine they're going for 4k which the two processors are equal in or in some cases, the 1950X is superior. I think AMD has the $1000 enthusiast CPU.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Zen architecture has a 27 degree C offset, which means the TR 1950X is cooler than the 7900X. And also, this is the only review I have come over where the Intel part is either cooler or less power hungry. Edit: I am surprised over these results. Watch/read AdoredTV's or Ars' reviews, and they get entirely different results. Threadripper is way faster in non-gaming tasks and a bit slower overall in all resolutions in gaming, while being about equal in 4K. Edit 2: I mean, who buys a 1k CPU for either gaming or below 4K/High res ultrawide activity... If you spend 1k on a CPU, man, you don't game first and create second.
@HobbsMachtVideos7 жыл бұрын
Wow that´s less gaming performance than I expected from the 1950X. Also I guess the 6950X at let´s say 4,3 GHz hits even higher number than the 7900X at 4,5 GHz. Modern High-End CPUs are really not made for gaming anymore.

Maybe an idea for the next vid where you do a comparison: when you're talking about the charts, maybe do some B-roll with the charts of which you're talking about? I mean, you are a beautiful man :D But I prefer to actually see the data that you're talking about. I didn't get what clockspeeds both CPUs are running at. Assuming Threadripper runs at a lower clock, it does make sense that it doesn't do as well in games.

So this should have been obvious to anyone. Higher per core clock just makes more of a difference for games than higher thread counts. That being said I'd love to see if perhaps the thread ripper can do things that the Intel chip can't. For instance two and three gpu set ups running at 4K I would think would press the intel chip to its limit while the and chip would handle it and have head room.
