@marcusrat44667 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I wouldn't buy a ThreadRipper CPU for gaming, just as you wouldn't buy a race car for driving to your local supermarket. Secondly, a 10-15% performance improvement isn't "killing it". Thirdly, the Intel processors are hotter, draw more power, and suck at pretty much anything that isn't gaming- which is about 90% of the workload that a content creator is looking to do. Finally, the Threadripper costs less, offers more performance, runs cooler, draws less power, and it is not Intel, so you can keep your motherboard for more than 6 months. And, they all come unlocked from the factory, in really pretty boxes.

Easily the best benchmark and review video of Threadripper I have seen to date. The difference between this and other YT video reviews is that you gave a reason why Threadripper makes sense in existing by providing data for price and performance vs team blue. Most videos I've watched show benchmarks but not as exhaustive as the ones in this video. They also talk about price/performance but having plot line graphs gives it much more value. Thank you for not only providing data but providing usable and understandable data.

Aaron Page Yea, just keep in mind Coffee Lake is dropping with 6 cores/12 threads on the mainstream likely making the 7700K somewhat obsolete already in Q3 (that is September!) according to some sources, and of course you can't reuse that shiny Z270 mobo you just bought to use that 7700Ks real potential. Might as well wait 1 month for the better product at this point.

The temperatures are wrong. AMD makes temperatures appear 27C higher than they actually are (The Tctl temperature sensor shown in the video, which controls fan RPM curve. What the video doesn't show is the Tdie temperature, the actual on-die temperature). So it is actually a very cold chip compared to intel offerings.
@Hardwareunboxed7 жыл бұрын
No :D The temps are not wrong. In what world would a 16-core CPU @ 4 GHz run at just 54 degrees with all cores underload?
@UrokLizard7 жыл бұрын
Tctl temperatures are for the purpose of more aggressive fan curve. The real temperature is Tdie which you have hidden. It's well documented that Tctl is 27C higher than real temperature.
@speirk7 жыл бұрын
The trouble is, with such a large CPU, the point of worrying about temperature (the measurement of heat energy intensity at a single point) is no longer valid -- you could have +20C points anywhere outside 2mm of the actual sensor. This is why AMD have a countermeasure in place.

"I can't recall a time when it was more exciting to be a PC enthusiast." The race to 1GHz in late 1999, early 2000 was incredible to witness. AMD bringing out Thunderbird to take on the P4. AMD inventing x86-64 in 2003, and then releasing the first dual core processor in 2005, all to just try and keep up with an Intel that was firing on all cylinders and holding nothing back, who always had the process node advantage and more money and resources to spend on things like awesome branch prediction in their CPUs. All of this was happening against the backdrop of nVidia, ATI, 3dfx, and Matrox all fighting a graphics war that was driving demand and pushing all PC hardware forward. It has been very exciting before. This is pretty exciting too though. This time Intel will have a harder time playing dirty. Their scale and investments in fabrication technology gave them lots of baked in advantages against AMD in the past. Samsung, TSMC, and AMD's partner GlobalFoundries (with help from Samsung) are all planning to jump ahead of Intel and reach 7nm before them. Intel's historic advantage in fab technology is coming to an end. They have more talent to throw at out-designing AMD, but they may very well be playing from behind a bit soon. I welcome the next few years of a renewed CPU/SoC war the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time. Now, if only someone could bring back Cyrix and make this a 3-horse race.

Well, EPYC is supposed to snatch the Xeon market away from Intel; but it seems Threadripper already does that. But then again, EPYC will, like Xeon, cover a wide price-spectrum; unlike Threadripper that only covers the highest tier. Threadripper truly shakes things up. Wonder how Intel will respond. Whether or not Intel strikes back hard, the consumer will always win.

i mean ...it will show just 200fps (cap on doom) on all chips anyway with a 1080ti...whats there to even compare?

This video is definitely THE BEST review of Threadripper, you can tell how much effort went into this, just amazing.

So... Amd kicks intels ass in every market except for High end high refresh rate gaming. I can't wait 'til zen 2 crushes intel in that market as well. Then intel will only have pentiums going for them.

Excellent job! I watched Linus in his 8:30 video with 2 minutes of ads. You're in a league of you own!
