So this is exactly the part in my build that I've been hung up on. Downfiring subs may be the way o go for me as well. The other thing I have been looking at is building a router table so that I can rout the MDF that I'll need for the corers. I've always wanted a router table anyway, so it'd just be a bonus. Thanks for the video Mark! Great info as always.

Hey mark, I would like to thank you for inspiring me to build an audio system, I started with an 8inch sub, and now I did all my speakers, a 12, a 4channel amp and a monoblock amp. I have all Skar audio equipment and to be honest I’d say it’s pretty impressive for the low cost, but I couldn’t have done it without the knowledge you put in your videos!!

I’ve previously done a build like this but with 4-10s. Don’t rely on just the glue to hold your baffle, it will eventually come apart. Use screws also to support the weight of the baffle and drivers. You can countersink and cover with wood putty to hide the screws.

Thanks, Mark. The best cheap (used to available "open source" enclosure design software YEARS ago, how I got it, was WinSD). If you are tight on space for an enclosure, manufacturer recommendations are just that... a recommendation for optimum output-internal air space. For example, even Hertz has an optimal size for a sealed enclosure (for their 12" shallow mount sub) with .8 cu.ft. internal airspace but their manufacturer enclosure is .72 cu.ft. The software doesn't know the specific vehicle, "real world" cabin gain, reflections, etc. of course. LOVED that you shared that a slightly lesser output (in SPL) is insignificant to the listening experience. Unless you're competing in SPL events, design for you vehicle and daily listening experience, IMO. Unless you spend a lot of time parked & playing your system, even a 1db difference in SPL will be totally unnoticeable, especially while driving. :D

Passive rads really help builds like this
@CarAudioFabrication3 ай бұрын
While they can be nice I find that if you have the space to add a whole other "cone" on the passive radiator you might as well add another subwoofer, especially when there are great solutions out there on the market that use such a small air volume.
@ZoeyR863 ай бұрын
@CarAudioFabrication I agree that this build with those subs is a good match. What I will say is the vast majority of people I do installs for they just want the highest spl per dollar. Or are they dead set on using ___ subs. Like I can take a box this same size drop a pair of kickers or sundown sa/x with a single 12in tuned passive rad in the middle increasing box net volume as I don't need to subtract a big port from the box. But you know this, so more or less a post for viewers

@EdgarMendezz2 ай бұрын
I’m no expert but based on my research. You shouldn’t wonder what size sub you get. First figure out your alternator capability. Then the subs that match that power capability, and that will fit in your truck. I think the subs in the video are good if you have enough power going to them. But if you don’t have enough power then bigger doesn’t mean better without the proper power. Especially for sealed where you need more power to move the big sub, in an airtight sealed box where the air has nowhere to go. (Shallow or not, it takes power to make power). Let’s say power is not an issue for you, then I think 13tw5 is a good option cause of limited airspace on a truck. But keep doing some research. Sorry for the rant but usually the root problem is the power not the size of the sub. Hope you find your preferred sub goodluck!

Does pointing down end up turning the gap underneath into a port that needs tuning? Kind of like a bandpass?
@CarAudioFabrication3 ай бұрын
We discuss this in the video :)
@kbman693 ай бұрын
The "simple" answer is yes(ish). I have calculated this variable many times with down firing ported boxes and found it just flattened the response on the higher "mid bass" end instead of rolling off steeply. more than likely in this sealed enclosure it would just continue gaining db into the 200-250 range which will be null anyway with most people using a low pass cutoff of 80-100..... So in THIS case it wont make a noticeable difference. Hope that helps answer your inquiry.
