One of the most preternaturally talented of the movie-brat auteurs to emerge from the New Hollywood of the 1960s, cinephile-turned-director Peter Bogdanovich began his career on a remarkable high note with a string of critical successes. Produced by Roger Corman, his startling first feature, TARGETS, starring Boris Karloff in his last dramatic role, transcends its B-movie origins and now plays as an eerily prescient look at the rise of gun violence in America. With his next film, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, an elegiac homage to John Ford and Howard Hawks, Bogdanovich was hailed as a wunderkind, and he made good on that promise in the similarly bittersweet Depression-era comedy PAPER MOON. These early triumphs are testaments to the out-of-the-gate brilliance of a filmmaker who exemplified the auteur-driven creative freedom of the New American Cinema.

Yes, Targets and Paper Moon are both very worthwhile views. Especially Targets because it's so underrated and features an amazing performance from Boris Karloff.

It’s be really cool if Targets could be back in print on disc anywhere. Better yet if Criterion could release it and Paper Moon which has a lovely MOC disc.

It’s a disturbing watch in the 21st century. Bogdanovich never could’ve known that mass shootings would become a regular, terrifying fixture of American life. I actually got to interview him about it!

How about you guys get with the times and start releasing these collections of films in a nice, hard, rigid slipcase like all the other great distributors are doing. I’m sick of these flimsy paper thin box sets. You back and do more sets like zatoichi the blind swordsman. These directors deserve their own sets. Btw I don’t want to pay 20 dollars for every single release. Thank you -loooong time criterion collector
