Three Chords to Know on Piano (In Every Key)

I am a guitarist learning piano. I play this on guitar in a band. With the exception of just a couple parts the whole song is really just a monotonous V IV I chord progression in the key of G. It’s almost impossible to lose your spot in the song. The biggest hits seem to have the simplest arrangements. I’m going to try to play this on the keys. Thanks for the lesson.

You are a wonderful teacher (.) I kind a figured it out myself when I was a kid and I thought I invented it! Then i moved my fingers to other scales. Thanks for sharing it to everyone. If one does not understand, s/he should watch this video a few times and then ask a teacher. Then play those three cords in many different scales as she explained. This is one of the first step to figure out what to play on left hand when accompanying the melody by right hand.

Even if I can play the Winter Wind (suggested by one of your videos), what you played is something I cannot do. I learned about the I, IIII, and V7 chords in an adult ed class, but my ex music teacher said I have to learn how to transcribe the late Ted Wilson and that famous Carol woman to really play pop songs and transcribing from ear is something that I cannot do. ps. II know everyone writes it as IV, but the Roman numer for four is IIII. Roman numerals are a bitch to multiply, that is why we use the indo arabic numer system.

Im sorry buy... isn't "sweet home alabama", as you play it, in the key of D? D (not G) sounds like the tonal center... Anyway, thanks for the lesson. Ill be practicing those chords in al 12 keys for the rest of january!

I'd say it's G major. You could argue for D mixolydian, but that makes no real difference in how you read and play the music. It looks like G major, the notes are all in G major, and it's easier to remember where everything goes in G major (to me, at least). Unless you are improvising, then the disctinction is mostly irrelevant (for playing).

javierdeljeur It's played in D Mixolydian, but if it were to be written on sheet music it would be in the key of G. The G chord or Tonic is still the tonal center in this chord progressions since the C chord to the G chord is a plagal cadence (amen cadence).

A major is a just above a Colonel and a minor is under 18 years of age.
